Well as some of you have realised, with help from people around me such as steve@dsengineering, Jim (Lennycarlof) and Pip, I am going to convert the RX-8 to a 3 Rotor monster with hopefully an eventual target of at least 700bhp.
We have the Gear Box and diff and an ECU/wiring system, thanks to Jim and engineering from Steve, is what is going to make the conversion feasible. Biggest issue we face will be packaging as the engine has to go back 150 cm into the bulkhead/ transmission tunnel, so the front of the engine sits in the standard RX-8 position.
Started already with the old engine removed and started gathering and ordering parts.
3 Rotor will be based around a brand new RX-7 FD3S engine with the extra Rotor housing, Rotor and Mid-Plate added on.
New Custom 3 Rotor Eccentric Shaft now ordered should be eight weeks away.
Special new sump has been ordered from Pineapple Racing and special weld on engine mounts have been ordered from Summit.
With the first race in March on the Silverstone GP track means the Target test time is really late January, so there's a big mountain to climb !!.
Wow! :great:
RX garage stuffed a four-rotor into one of their Rx8s. Kees Hoebeke told me that the fourth rotor was actually inside the car, behind the firewall. You'll have a bit more space with "only" three. ;D
Kees brought this to one of the Rotorstock events we used to run and from memory it was on carbs with one on show where the glove box used to be.
Simply Wow. Gonna be a beast.

Pip was in Norway last week mapping.
He found this power at less than one bar of boost and look at the torque curve, this should pull the RX-8 along nicely and this is wheel horsepower :icon_thumleft:
That's a very nice looking graff

That should give "adequate" performance! :13:
Hello Brett, good to see you here.
"adequate" performance! Nah, If I get to "adequate" it means i'm racing at the sharp end but more is always good >:D .

Yesterday I managed to reduce Jim's excellent work into a heap of spaghetti or even worse minestrone :(
Seriously, I have needed to strip the car this far to be able to cut the gearbox tunnel to accommodate the engine and get the weight back in the car so as not to destroy its handling.
Next week I should have the engine mountings in from Summit and the 20B upper manifold in from Texas then we can see how its going to be mounted
It's easily sorted, now it's nice and striped it maybe time for a PDU to clean up that spaghetti.
:sign0085:
Thats easy for you to say Jim, scares the life out of me

Wow can't wait to see and hear Clive
My new, well new to me, el cheapo manifold arrived from Texas today.
Trust me its worse than it looks with cracks up most of the other ports.
My old mate Tim the welder has had a look and suggested we cut out the leg completely and weld in a fresh alloy tube.
Only just seen this thread Clive. Not been on MRC via website for a while, mainly on my phone.
Gives me some inspiration to hurry up with the Rotus, drive it, use it and start with the "Carbon8" project.
No jokes about fizzy drinks please..... however, if 7up want to sponsor me.........

So much exactly does need butchering out of the bulkhead
It only really comes to light when I think how tight my inlet was on a 2 rotor Engie install

Basically the tunnel will need refabricating as I want to keep the front of the engine in the same place so the water system etc bolts on the same as the old engine.
Thing is the engine is 16.5 cm longer so we need to make room for the big intake and the exhaust manifold.
Still waiting for the sump but at least now I have the dummy block and manifolds, dimensionally things can start to be worked out.
Wow, I've been off-line for a few weeks and Christine is in pieces!! Looking forward to seeing v2.0

Going to use a stock length shaft with a Mazda centre iron as a thin billet plate would have been expensive.
Here you go, stock and short length shafts are here.

If you decided to buy a shaft, as a trader I should be able to get you a better price

Another part of the jigsaw arrived, I now have a new Flywheel / Clutch assembly .
I wanted to stay on a single plate assembly with a Racing Beat Alloy Flywheel
The last pressure plate was rated at 598 lb/ft and held 500BHP
This one was custom built for me and has a clamping force of a whopping 2375 lb/ft, that should hold the extra power and torque.
So what gearbox will you be using Clive ?

Bit of news.
Carl has now finished the Big Street Port to the spec I wanted on the plates and housings.
New 3rd Rotor is due in from Japan next week.
3 Rotor shaft is now machined up and will leave New Zealand Friday or Monday :13:
Ordered up a pair of AEM Smart Coils as I may need another two to spark up the extra Rotor ;)
Next I will hopefully need a lot lot more rear end grip so we are going to have to have a fat boy rear end to get these under, that will probably be clothed in monster HanKook tyres.
Just ordered these from America last night Konig Heliogram 18X12 5X114.3 ET20 Titanium Metallic .
Nice wheels. Any way possible to put big wheels up front as well..... square set up. Get the braking to match the go. Rotation to limit wear. And negate any push understeer.
You know it makes sense.

Sent from my SM-G977B using Tapatalk
The 10's rub on lock as it is so I don't think it's do able.
As for understeer, on reflection I really haven't been able to get the Balance I have wanted on turn in this year, so I could brake later into corners.
To combat this I am going to double up on the rear anti roll bar which should cure things, so rather than having the shocks stiffer at the rear, hopefully this will let me run the shocks softer giving more grip.
Saw this on ebay. 20b alloy sump...may be of use? (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221216/6b55454a44b31950ca58353cc6c159e4.jpg)

Is this something you have also tried in the past Clive ?
Sure I remember reading it somewhere ?
Would more wing angle help
?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Many thanks for the thought Wayne.
Yes played with all this in the past and have settled on the angle I have now.
Any steeper angle pushes the car into understeer.
I remember as Jon will remember. I put the car on pole one day, but felt there was more to come from the car and was going to change the rear wing angle but Jon talked me out of it , exclaiming but you have just it on pole so best leave it alone.
Good old Jon, I won the first race overall, stupidly I changed the wing for the second race and the car was junk :violent1:
It is the sign of a good chassis though that even small changes make a big difference. I have had race cars before that you change everything and the thing still feels the same!
Jon, thanks for the thought on the sump and yes, had that come up a couple of months ago, I could have worked with that and saved a big lump of Money!
The new shiney (expensive) one should be here tomorrow from Pineapple Racing :)

You will see below that we now have some serious rubber as a christmas present for Christine
:occasion14:
I spotted on e-bay a set of Hankook tyres that were not only the sizes I wanted but also the compound I wanted.
Turns out the guy had just bought an Ultima and these new tyres came with it, new and unused with an invoice that said £1200 ------------ I knocked him down a little, OK a lot and got them for just £400 for the set, bit early for tyres but wow at that price :13: .
Then today my 12x18 Konigs arrived in from Good-Win-Racing in America who helped me with the price so it really is Happy Christmas Christine :a035:
Looks like I will need at least these flares to cover those monsters :whoo:
oooooh pretty :D
I should have kept my new tyres hidden for a few days 🤔 (I know some have seen this on FB ;) )
A big part of the Jigsaw arrived today. Graphically shows how much longer the new engine will be.
Last big bit now is deciding which Turbo to use. Looking like it will be a Borg Warner equivalent to a Garrett GT4294 / GT42 Turbo 1.15 A/R as the Borg Warner should be cheaper.
That looks so good
I've heard good things about Pulsar turbo's aye. I'm not sure on part numbers or sizes though haha
Good Day today and made huge progress on the badly broken manifold.

No pressure, sounds so simple when you say it like that Wayne :))
It will also need at least one test before the race at Silverstone as well.
Engines ported but still needs lots of work to finally assemble as 3 Rotors are much more complicated than 13b's or 10 and 12A's, also its because its an FD motor being converted.
Hopefully next week we can get the tunnel cut out, the dummy engine in place, main mountings fitted next week as this will then let me get the propshaft sent away to be shortened as the engines going back 6 inches.
And that's just to start with!
I wish my Rotus build was that easy :)
At least ya keeping Steve busy

Thanks Jim, with my stupid head on I had to look up what one of these really was !
Good job someone's got some brains around here :)) .
As someone once said. Ve have some good news and ve have some bad news.
Bad news,is Steve and myself offered the block up under the car and there is no way we can cut enough out of the tunnel to move the engine back 6", keeping the car legal as the rules say you cannot shift and also have a clutch pedal!
This now means the engine will have to go forward like the other conversions I have seen but this means coming up and over the steering rack as you will see on an image below.
Thing is the RX-8 steering rack is very fat, however I think I have the solution with an MX-5 rack thats thinner and will let me lower the engine a bit more.
Good news is the plenham came out very well after my welder Tim worked his magic, then I ported out the entrance where the throttle body bolts on plus as above we have a solution to get the engine a little lower.
Yeah the mx5 one should work
When you said you'd try and sit it 6inch further back
I thought , it was hard enough beating the fire wall back an inch to fit the standard intake , we even had to remove the brake lines .
Sounds way too much work and fabrication .
How much do you think it will affect the balance of the car ?
Surely not that bad ?
Good news is , it's coming along progress is good
So a bit more wing or extra 20 litres of fuel to balance it out is it

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Cars a long way away from being ready for this season ATM, serves me right for ripping apart a perfectly good car, just because it wasn't fast enough, we now just have a big hole !! 😉
Seriously, between Steve and myself we ended up cutting a bit more out of the car than anticipated.
BTW the Rack above had no chance of fitting as everything was wrong when I matched it up!
Flipping heck
Wow , Clive that's hell of a hole .
Will that affect the structure integrity ?
Is the plan to land the engine In then build/ fabricate everything back on the firewall ?
Would have liked to have seen how it looked when the engine was dry fitted in the place you wanted it .
Just a thought , as an example , if the 3 rotor is say 150 mm longer
Would the balance be better that it was moved back half so 75mm ?
Good luck

Nah, I could get a Viper V10 in there >:D .
Wayne, once we know what fits where, a new metal fire wall will get welded in.
Trying to not have the engine as far forward as all the other RX-8 builds I have found.
I think many are just leaving the engine down at the back, but this means the sump hangs very low.
Not an issue on a road car but I really need the sump flat with the subframe, hence the little hole.
Work permitting, I should be offering the engine back up on Monday, so then I will have more info.

Finally I have the engine / Gear box sitting where I want it to.
Reading the 2023 rules I have got to keep the engine the right side of the bulkhead after all.
You will see from the picture showing the black hose sticking up that I have had to come forward more than I hoped, one plus is that the MX5 "quick" rack that is slimmer can be fitted in the stock location which keeps geometer intact and lets me have the engine a lot lower than with the Fat RX-8 rack.
Like most projects its turning into something more than anticipated and due to the longer engine sitting at the front the Anti Roll bar has to be relocated and the radiator, water system, alternator and intercooler assembles re-engineered to fit and work.
Great news'

That's one for 2024 :))
Progress, the manifolds fit and the exhaust clears the steering plus the alternator fits down the other side :)
Engine mounts next.
That is looking just great Clive :P
Ooooosh that turbo is close to that Boot on that steering rack.
Hi is that Zircotec? .........
Made more progress.
Engine is now properly mounted with a much modified kit that was designed to hold up a 350 Chevy engine.
Radiator now relocated and new brackets made, also it should have better airflow as its now more upright.
As you will see in the image though the radiator has got to be remade along the top to get the top hose in a different place.
Also this time rather than the RX-8 fans a Davis Craig fan will go on the back that has a 1000 CFM flow, that should help.
Another piece of the jigsaw arrived as the Full Function Engineering 20B-RE Trigger Hall kit has arrived from America, along with the extra pair of AEM coils.
Steering rack proved to be a challenge after realising the MX-5 potentially could have caused bump steer.
Re- butchered the RX-8 rack down to the bare bones and some and it now fits under the lowered now forward engine.
Next challenge is the front Anti Roll bar that will need to sit some 6 inches forward with new brackets to hold the drop links in the correct place on the lower arms.
Spent all day on that one and at least another day will be needed to get that saga finished and out the way.
This instsll is certainly throwing up some challenges! Good progress though :13:
Yep, if the rules would have allowed me to poke the engine 6" back through the bulkhead, I wouldn't have encountered many of these issues.
Great to see good progress Clive

Turbo is a S400 72mm C/W SX-E Supercore; with a T4 Divided Turbine Housing 1.10 A/R
Hopefully this will help see 700 bhp on a bar of boost with next to no lag to get me off the corners :great:
More got done today with Steve's help.
The big 4" down-pipe / mid-pipe is now connected to the rear exhaust section with just the wastegate exit pipe to plumb back into the down-pipe. (the flex I ordered was too long)
Abandoned the MX-5 steering Rack after realising I could pair my manually converted RX-8 rack down a lot more to give the clearance I needed under the front of the sump, so I could keep the engine as low as possible.
Tomorrows task is to start building the new bulkhead / tunnel assembly.
Sunday I will take the rest of the engine parts down to Carl so he can start the final build
All the plates and housings are already ported (big big Street Port)
5 Weeks to go and counting ???

Turbo is a S400 72mm C/W SX-E Supercore; with a T4 Divided Turbine Housing 1.10 A/R
Hopefully this will help see 700 bhp on a bar of boost with next to no lag to get me off the corners :great:
Hi Clive
I have the same turbo going on my 2 rotor build as we speak. This is a good turbo and plenty for what you want.
The build is interesting and if you go with lightened Rotors with a bit of Scalloped in them, turbo will be fully boosting by 4k.
4 inch down pipe choice is a good choice as you know rotaries don't like back pressure.
Wishing you well Clive.
Cheers
Mir
Personally I think the Turbo have for the 3 Rotor will be way too big for your 13B
With the Race car I went through three Turbo's before I found one that gave me good power (520bhp) but drove like a normally aspirated Rotary, because I needed a Turbo that would not just light up the rears when the boost came in, so I could drive it in the wet
Indeed I won races in the wet ;) .
If you haven't bought it yet, maybe have a look at this one, also it will save you over a thousand pounds :great:

Thanks for the input Clive. Yes you have kept the rotary spirit alive - we all wish you well in your future races too.
According to the ports, fueling, and manifold design, we are certain that this turbo will be fully boosted under 4k or little over 4k (will share the dyno graph).
I must say, we have taken a different route in building our engine and concentrated on the top end (hence 1.1 housing).
Not long to go before we know the results of this turbo on 13b.
What we have learnt over the years that, everything has to complement each other to produce reliable power. Hence, we are moving away from many common upgrades/portings/ignition, things that people do to build a rotary race car.
Everything on this build is different and we are building things differently to see if we achieve something better or we will return to the drawing board again! 😊
I will share experience and graphs/data once it's up and ruining. Its going in for exhaust manifold work this month. The manifold was designed by us after we had done a lot of research keeping in mind the turbo and other relevant things.
I guess time will tell but I will share everything.
Cheers

More progress today,
When I got to the workshop today Steve was cutting out card templates out for me (thank you)
Spent the rest of the day cutting sheet and welding in the new tunnel / firewall.
Needs cleaning up and painting but really pleased how it came out and happy with the way it tied in that all the strength is back in from all the cutting.
Al good progress Clive

Bit more progress.
Steve has now machined all the plates and housings to convert from FD to 3 Rotor plus two bored and reamed two holes for the big 1/2" though bolts to stop twist.
Picked up the modified FD Koyo Rad and the front cover, that now has drains for the Turbo and for the catch can drain.
.
Well done Jim :13:
Great to see final the assembly stage now. I hope all goes to plan. Brands date in diary.
That's looks like it's coming together well
One last big push now
Best of luck gents

No need for relays and fuses, very tidy.

We now have the new 3 Rotor in the bay with the Mustang Dog box bolted up behind. Many thanks to Jim who drove down again from Wakefeild and has spent two solid days on wiring in the new Link ECU and PDM
Well with Huge herculean efforts to help me Jim who has virtually lived down here for the last two weeks to re-wire the whole car and the brilliant machine work from Steve (DS Engineering)to fit the big Hemi Fly by wire Throttle body etc plus assistance from Pip (PG Auto) who will be mapping he car, we are all nearly there after seven months of hard work. Hopefully tomorrow the car will be fired up, then off up to Pips for Mapping. Still a lot of work to do, but I am confident enough that I have booked a full day test at Brands for the 21st and also paid to race on the 22nd and 23rd in the Brands CTRC Thunder Saloon Championship that will be streamed live on the BARC YouTube Channel
Looking fantastic, good luck on the first start.

Are you testing at Brands tomorrow Clive? I had that date in my diary from a while ago.
Issues up at Pips today getting the car ready for mapping and need to pull the engine to check something, so no Brands next week.
Real sorry for everyone who have helped get the car this far :(
Back in its shed now till 6 weeks when the next Brands test is booked :-[
Oh no real shame after all the work. Hopefully something simple.

I know a few are wondering what is happening with the Racecar.
Unfortunately we have found we have needed to change direction as regards the engine and have bought a different engine that will be assembled by Pip.
Hopefully our new target becomes the biggest event on the calendar which is Brands 1st and 2nd of July. They are even flying cars and drivers over from New Zealand for this special event.
Just booked this plus a full test day the day before.

More progress on the Race car today.
With much chopping I sorted out the rear arches so the new 12x18 wheels now fit.
I now have a new ported, rare as rocking horse poo, genuine 20B Cosmo engine, that has been lightened and balanced.
Huge thanks go to my friend Pip Gardner (PG Auto) who not only knows how to screw these special engines together but also raced one successfully some twenty years ago in an RX-7FC.
Thanks to Pip pulling out all the stops, I will be dropping the engine in the RX-8 tomorrow to then get it up to him for Mapping next Wednesday, then over to Donnington Thursday, then all being well, off to Race the following weekend at the big Super Touring event at Brands.

Cars finally running and mostly mapped "but" my previous Rad cant cope with the bigger engine an we are seeing 110 degrees around the whole system after even a short run so no good for the track! :sign0098: Super exciting times! (Not talking about above mentioned Yorkshire backside) :D
More progress in the huge effort by all to get the car attending Brands next week and getting temperatures under control, because of the physically bigger Cosmo 20B engine that now carries 50% more oil and water than the 13B engine did.
A big Koyo RX-7 FD Duel pass radiator was ordered on a special next day delivery from California to be here yesterday, but sods law, the first time for years it got trapped in customs but should be here Monday, then modified to fit.
Because a Rotary derives much more of its cooling from oil, than a piston engine, today I fitted two monster 34 row oil coolers in place of the tiny Mazda Coolers.
Really pleased that 10 years on, the Racing Beat oil lines that have never ever been a problem, bolted straight onto the new Mocal coolers.
Made more progress today. Fitted the new RX-7 FD Koyo Rad that finally arrived, engine block temperatures have come down from 110 degrees to 86 😁. Cars booked for the Dyno wednesday so fingers crossed it will be OK for a full day test Friday and then if all is well two Race days at the weekend. Sadly the air horns had to go to make space for the intercooler 🙄
Fingers crossed the dyno session shows some good results and no (more) issues !
Looks positively menacing! :great:
Good day yesterday and we are 99% further forward than just a week ago.
Ran the engine all afternoon on the Dyno with the Cooling under control and yes, we can go racing however with very reduced boost and horsepower, as we found a boost leak that appears to be from the new lower manifold that I will strip off today.
Should be interesting to drive even in this form as full power comes in at just 4500rpm!!
Great news that the only issue found is a leaky manifold

and loving the turbo peaking through the hood

I opened this peaking through my fingers just in case I was again greated by Northern arse but this video is PG

Good to see Christine running again and getting ready for test day.
Pleased to say the 3 Rotor ran faultlessly doing 62 laps in total, running hardly any Turbo boost or revs due to running in, the car got down to a 54.3 on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit, whilst its not very fast for racing over the weekend, it gives me an idea of what's to come.
There's a short Dyno from Wednesday that you have seen above and a couple of shorts of the car going up to Druids on the link below. HUGE thanks goes to Jim, Pip and Steve for making the 3 Rotor Project happen and work.
https://www.youtube.com/@racingbeateurope
Great news and progress Clive. Now you can dial her in and get some miles on her so you can turn that boost up!
I've posted some shorts on YouTube.
Huge thanks for Jim for taking these and Philip for posting these up :great: :great: :great:
Yet again so pleased to say the 3 Rotor ran faultlessly again with no issues at all completing qualifying and both races. Still running hardly any Turbo boost or revs, I just tried to stay out of trouble just putting mileage on the engine and at one stage even let myself drop down to 32nd out of the 43 starters, then picked them off to finish 20th, then in the second race a 15th finish which is OK for the tune the car has which is less power than last year ATM!. Out again tomorrow Racing on the shorter Indy Circuit with qualifying and two races then after that back on the Dyno with the engine run in to see some proper power.
I have now raced the car for some 9 years and with the help of the people around me who have supported me which I am so grateful for, I am looking forward to the next race at Snetterton with what should be a totally transformed car compared to what you see in the picture from 9 years ago.
Brilliant news Clive :icon_thumleft:
I'd hoped to get along tomorrow but Gwyn and I have a lot to do before we depart for our Airbnb in Chippenham on Wednesday. We haven't even unpacked from our cruise yet!
Good luck tomorrow and see you next weekend!
Brands Report/ Good and bad today. Fan Belt snapped in Qualifying due to a bolt shearing on the alternator bracket, now fixed and that won't happen again!
In Sundays race itself 34 cars started, and I had fun getting up to 12th by the end, but realised there was an exhaust blow which turned out as you can see in the picture to be that the bolts had worked loose and broke the gasket, so with everything we set out to do as regards running the engine in and making sure all the modifications worked correctly, I called it a day.
Brought lots of positives away, 62 laps testing, 3 races and 2 qualifying sessions with no major issues first time out with not only the engine, but all the different custom ancillaries that were made plus major changes to the front and rear suspension that all seems to have worked.
Another positive was that I was just 3.7 seconds away from the winner's best lap with very little power ATM .
Once again thanks must go to Jim who drove down from Wakefield and supported and worked with me across two days to make all this happen. Thanks, must also go to Steve@DSengineering for much much machining etc, etc and Pip for building this amazing engine and tuning it for me. Last but very much not least, my Lisa for all the support over the last 10 months to help me make this 3 Rotor project happen.
Best of all now all is well, once the gasket is fixed, its off to Pips to find some real 3 Rotor Mazda POWER ;)
One bit of good news was that I asked the car to be weighed while they were weighing the Jags and it was lighter than I thought even with the 3 Rotor.
"Allegedly" a standard RX-8 231 weight is 1425 Kg
The Race car came in at 1150 Kg :blob8:
:sign0098: :great:
All sorts of pictures are coming up from the weekend.
I like this one as it shows how I boxed in the Peugeot so he couldn't move which allowed me to pass both cars in one go, a little further down the straight ;)
(I almost forgot I was running in ::) )
Patience was the name of the game all weekend on reduced revs not letting the engine rev out and just about NO Boost to let the engine run in nicely so some lift and coast was also going on.
In the first race I let them all go dropping back to 32nd then worked my way up a little
https://youtu.be/EEm4r8jXs10
Now I've seen this, I can't wait to see what it goes like with some proper power and it dont sound bad either 😁
https://youtu.be/vvjdd0Z5fW0
Great videos! What a sound :P
Looking at building a new front brake set up, any one here got an RX-8 upright with a hub attached.
I don't need the disc or the calliper ?
Race two
Many thanks to Philip for constructing these.

Had I gone for the biggest of he three Turbos suggested, instead of the smallest of the three, I maybe could have had that :( .
Good luck tomorrow Hope you get some good numbers
Sounds good! :great:
What were the magic numbers?
After a ten month Mission and HUGE help from Jim, Pip (PG Auto) and Steve it's all finally come together with results on the Dyno yesterday but only on low boost for the next couple of Races, Pip has given me 549BHP @ just 5800 RPM, but more importantly, 411lb of Torque (an RX-8 has 155 lb.ft) as this is the thing that will drag the car much faster off the corners which was the object of the whole exercise as the piston cars did have much more Torque which accelerated them off the corners faster than me.
More tweak's will then take place over the winter to put even more power into the car.
Congratulations!
Torque curve looks epic.

Three wide, round Druids then ;)
Hopefully now I have a bit more power I will be a bit further up the grid.
All set for a Test Session at Brands from 2-5 tomorrow to test the latest mods plus get used to the extra power.
As I was having trouble stopping the car last time out, I have now fitted Big Wilwood Racing (GN) callipers that were developed for Nascar, these give me a much larger pad area and they were also picked because they were designed to stop a Nascar stock car, that weighed twice as much as the RX-8 from 200mph! (thanks Steve for making the calliper brackets)
Next tomorrow I will find out if the extra canards front and rear give more downforce. The rear canard idea was copied from the Garage 56 Nascar Lemans car that raced a few weeks ago. They stated that although they cost straight line speed the downforce gain was huge, we shall find out tomorrow!.
Not sure if you know this but don't get confused canards do not "create " downforce...
They stop you "losing" downforce that you've already created via your splitter / flat floor/ diffuser.
They create a vortex that runs down either side of your car and stop air spilling in to the underside of your car between the front and rear wheels and disrupting the high velocity / low pressure air, whilst the low velocity / high pressure above your car is pressing down from the splitter, base of windscreen and your rear wing.
But don't just take my word for it
https://youtu.be/aCXTVpj1Ci4
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Just off so haven't got time to read.
Going by Rikki's Aston, when he glued canards on the car it transformed his grip.
The reason for the test is that I know Brands so well I should hope I can feel any difference good or bad -------we shall see ;)
Saturday Test was a success, didn't go crazy, just decided once I had the brakes and suspension dialled in to put in some consistent laps.
(Brakes are now very impressive with excellent pedal feel)
Probably as we fit the extra Canards to both front and rear, they didn't affect understeer or oversteer, but the car felt much more stable and direction change was better.
I got down to a 52.303 on an ever increasingly slippery track, as there were light showers on and off through the last session.
Really surprised that the Ideal lap time of : 52.303 on my last lap of the day matched the best time of : 52.303, never ever seen that before!.

Not bad at all for a first outing! :great:
As this Super Saloon Championship was not my normal Championship and was there on invite, basically I treated yesterday as an extended test session.
Couldn't work out where my pace had gone after qualifying 4th and it was only after the event we found out the turbo had come loose and I had lost what little boost I had.
One nice thing was that I was awarded driver of the day by the BRSCC Clerk of the course for clean dicing with other cars and giving other cars just enough room without contact
That explains a few things. Fortunately an easy fix. Congrats on the trophy! :sign0098:
Is that very fittingly a rotor symbol, or is it just a coincidence? ;D

Looks like the bigger issue was that I used bolts rather than shouldered studs that I have now used.
If you look at the bolt you can see where the turbo has chattered the thread away, it could actually be that the weight of the turbo is not helping, so we are also going to weld a heavy support strap to tie the down pipe to the exhaust manifold.

Double stack
Get shouldered bolts and the locking studs

Its common on the 5 turbo conversions.
After blowing a gasket and finding loose nuts i swapped to inconel exhaust studs and the aermotive nuts prob 2.5 yrs ago and countless trackdays no more issue. Ive snapped x2 downpipe supports on a large 3" downpipe attached to turbo that ive given up trying to support it.

These pictures popped up.
Martin Renolds and his Escort has become a bit of a nemesis over the last couple of years as we seem to keep occupying the same piece of track, mind you he has been winning a lot of races this year, mind you the car really has the best of everything though and is just one of his four race cars.
Anyway, hopefully with a bit ore power we can stop this both occupying the same piece of track thing ;) .
He was certainly hassling you at Brands!
Fingers crossed a bolted down turbo helps create a bit of distance your way
Some good pics there. Good to see it running aye! Jamie mentioned some good aero info earlier on also :occasion14:
With the turbo/exhaust situation. I have heard good things about those nuts. But Nord Lock washers also help the situation a LOT!
Got to go with what I have.
The Studs are 10mm which is normally 17mm spanner size, my problem is I need 10mm with 14mm spanner size!
Surprisingly, this is due to the size of the Turbo ;)
I had a google and you can get locking nord washers..(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230906/3bc2988c9fde36ecc692d191d64ea29c.jpg)

Thanks to Jamie's excellent fabrication of a pair of brackets I now have the front 4 Pots on the back of the car.
Next weekend at Snetterton I will see if I now have the brake balance I need to let me brake deeper into corners without fear of locking the fronts as I did last time out.

Just turned into a three day event.
After a bit of pestering, MSVR have let me sneak into the afternoon Test session on Friday at Snetterton, the day before the race.
This gives me a chance to set the brakes, suspension and tyre pressures up to go racing.
Tomorrow I am off to a wheel alignment centre to get the toe altered on front and rear to hopefully help with corner entry turn in as I still feel its lacking in this area.
Straight after Snetterton I have to start working out a new exhaust system as the dyno showed too much back pressure going from 4" to 3" which is literally strangling the engine about 6500rpm with 8 psi back pressure its literally stalling the Turbo and leading to lack of boost !
This means Snetterton will become a different track as I will need to be changing up in places I wouldn't normally dream of, in other words I have got to learn how to drive :(
Just straight pipe it and fry the opposition! :great:

Looks like I'm not going to make it up to Snett this weekend after all.
I see the Sat race is very late in the schedule and we have a home football fixture.
Sunday is Tommy's 1st birthday party, in Brentwood - can't miss that :)
I wish you every success at the weekend Clive :13:
What time is your test session on Friday Clive? Maybe I can see you on Friday....?
Hi Malcolm, Clive will out at Snetterton on Friday for the afternoon test session so will be there mid day onwards.
Motor Racing is Dangerous.
Not a good day today, in the first test session at Snetterton, I was really pleased with changes to the brakes and suspension geometry changes to the car but last lap the car went onto tick over.
With the fly-by wire throttle reset I knew the cars throttle wasn't right and was going to drive back, but coming out of the Hamilton corner the throttle jammed wide open and there was no way I was going to make the next corner so with the brakes full on I chucked the car into a spin, praying I wouldn't hit the barrier at something like 70-80 MPH but I still did !.
In 50 years on track it's probably the hardest hit I've had, got a sore neck and a dislocated shoulder that my mate Jim pulled back into position. Looks like the body shell is OK and thankfully I got the car to spin which scrubbed off some speed. Had I gone in head on, the car would have been scrap and maybe me as well.
Motor Racing is Dangerous.
Really sorry to see/hear that Clive. I dare say you'll be inundated with sentiments about it being great that at least you are OK. They aren't much help when you unload the trailer and have to set to though. Call if there is anything I can do in the 'you hold it I'll hit it' department. Don't have Steve's skillset but will bring my own biscuits.
First things first: so happy to hear you are ok! Hope you'll get some good physio for that shoulder and neck. Well done to avoid a total write-off and potentially serious injury! :sign0098:
Hopefully the car is still structurally sound and repairs won't be too difficult. Main thing is your shoulder gets time to heal properly. Shoulder joints are delicate and complex stuff and to race, you'll need two fully functioning ones.
Get well soon, pilot!
So sorry to hear this news. Even more disappointing for you give the herculean effect to get Christine the extra rotors.
As people have said, cars can be rebuilt but people are more fragile so glad to hear you're doing OK.
Thanks for the thoughts and offers, they are appreciated.
Necks OK today and I started my physio today by starting today by starting to strip the car ;)
Not quite as bad as I thought and confined mainly to the head lamp braketery area.
The impact force was so great that it tore my battery box from its mounts and flipped the door catch to the locked position (so that's why we couldn't get the door open!).
Fortunately I still have the old spitter that will give me holes i can use to re-align the bent brackets.
Monday I will order a new wing so by the end of the week I can get the headlamp back in the correct position so the new nose cone will fit.
Sadly my new oil cooler has a hole in it so I have decided to try and save some money and see if my welder mate can sort it for now.
Mazdaspeed nose cone or replica needed!
Unfortunately, I need a need a nose cone to get the car out for the next Donnington event. Doesn't need to be perfect, what have you? if not maybe a different aftermarket fibreglass nose cone.
Huge thanks to Jim and Wayne for sorting out a nose cone for me to get out for Donnington in three weeks time.
Wayne donated the nose (thank you) then Jim heroically drove for like 10 hours and around 700 miles to collect it for me !!(thank you)

Great progress

Have you managed to solve the root cause for the throttle ? (

 I may have missed it)
The electronics on the car are now way above my understanding, but I understand Jim has reprogrammed the system and all is OK now.
Good to hear as you don't want to experience that again any time soon
Thanks to Steve, Jim and Wayne the cars back to looking like this ;D
Off to Donnington today.
Qualifying 12:10 tomorrow
First race that is live on BARC site is at 12:10 then 14:15 Sunday.
Grid is so big, they have split the Jags and given them their own races so my Races will just be Thunder Saloons.
"But" they are letting Thunder Saloons and the Jags qualify together, wow that's going to be a lot of cars on track.
Good luck Clive - I will hopefully watch on the live stream :icon_thumleft:
Qualifying due in next few minutes on TSL timing.....
Also now live streaming on BARC video channel....
:( Clive will be disappointed with his qualifying time, which will put him last on the grid for the race at 17.50 today.
There were 40+ cars out there in that session, so maybe a factor. At least Clive managed to get around 5 laps, with no obvious major issue.
Well, let's hope he can make up some places in the race. Here's the link to the results: https://www.tsl-timing.com/event/234163 (https://www.tsl-timing.com/event/234163)
Any updates on Today?
Working day for me rather busy so couldnt follow on youtube or tsl.

Some technical challenges, by the looks of it. On the upside, lap times came down into the 1:53s.
Unfortunately, the ghost of Christine came back yesterday for the second time in two races and she would not behave, so that's it for the season 😕 .
In qualifying we had an ignition coil go down, so I lost a cylinder. So just made sure I did enough laps to qualify to be able to race. Jim sorted the ignition, and we were go to go for the race!
On track the car still had no sort of proper power then the clutch started slipping which looks like being from a gearbox leak.
We now have six months to exorcise Christine to find reliability and proper performance to get the car where I need it to be. Thanks must go to Jim Steve and Pip during the difficult year we have had for their help 👍.
Well you've been let down by individuals this season so when Christine starts acting up then you get no respite this season.
Let's be honest since 20b mk1 went west, it's been a constant battle against time, and working doubly hard for all concerned.
Now you can focus, build it methodically, have time to do proper shakedowns and not have to wait for a race session to find out things still ain't right.
Appreciate its not a road car so you can't go and pootle round the village, but brands is in ya back yard virtually.
You'll crack it now you're not playing catch up. It will all come together

Thanks Jamie.
Your right, we have been on the back foot all year.
The car still cant be mapped till I get a full 4" system through the car somehow, then I will have time to leave the car with Pip to fully build a map for it and like you, even Lisa has said we must test and test to get the car right for next season, including one on the Donnington GP circuit as this is our first Race next year.
Somehow we need to get rid of the fast but fragile tag from the commentators for next season!

Started preparations this week for the 2024 season.
New 4inch exhaust from Turbo to tail pipe is the first mission, using these two beautifully made silencers which will hopefully will hopefully keep Christeen at the 106 decibel limit allowed.
Completed the first section today and hope to complete the whole system by the end of the week.
However its being a bit of a challenge getting this monster system through the car though ??? . .

Although I haven't posted for a while, I've still been working away on the Race Car.
Picked up a new sponsor for the season and Exedy have supplied the Twin Plate clutch and Flywheel assembly for the car.
4" exhaust system plus lots more heat shielding is now complete, just got to noise test it to make sure it complies with the 106 decibel noise limit .
Still amazed I got a 4" system down between the fuel tanks and diff!
Finding the oil leak turned into a nightmare on the TVR Dog box. Changed the oil seal on the RX-8 bell housing, put the gear box back in and still had an oil leak. Pulled the box again and it turned out to be leaking from behind the special adaptor plate!
Just waiting now to get the car up to Pips on the Dyno to get some real power into the car, then I start testing in January for the new season starting in March.
Looks fantastic! Great jobs. Almost a shame to hide that clutch away in a bellhousing! :great:

Jim spent yet another day driving all the way down from Wakefield and then a whole day turning Christine into something more like KITT ! :sign0098:
With the power I now have available to punish the gear box and diff, heat could become an issue, so Jim has installed sensors in the units to monitor oil temperatures though the ECU.
"However" Jim being Jim, he has now incorporated a screen which will show on camera not only these temperatures, but also revs, plus oil pressure and engine temperatures and the facility is there to even for Jim to monitor telemetry from the pits remotely !!.
This means the car does everything like KITT in the TV show bar talk to me !!!!
Full test day booked at Brands on the 31st of January where I am hoping to find the difference using bigger diameter Pirellis to raise the gearing making use of the extra torque Christine now has available.

Test day. After a weird electrical gremlin, all sorted by hero Jim, first test run was great. Car sounded good and Clive happy. Unfortunately, session ended early due to a red flag. All set for next session pm.
Huge thanks for coming along today to Jim and Malcom and the help. Also great to see Andrew (Jinx) appear as well :great: .
What was not to like...grey skies, freezing cold and raining...everything a race track is in my mind! Was glad to see my (and my username's) tactical withdrawal to the grandstand resulted in the gremlins giving up. It sounded very good as it howled down the straight. That silver BMW was quick though and sounded good too. If the Peugeot next door to you was 70k, I dread to think what the Beemer must have cost.
Economic downturn? Where? :)

Like you said, there's no money about!!
Video from Phillip, thank you :great: .
You will see me slow to let the Beemer catch up around 10 minutes in.
Nice one Phillip :13:
I'll bet you enjoyed that session, Clive :)
Best viewed on full screen, with the sound turned up!
Thanks Malcolm.
It will be interesting to see how I fair against the Beemer in the dry when I have the map on "qualifying" mode ;)
Car sounds epic ,
Why does it sound different in 3rd than 4th?...
Is 1 a straight cut gear and other not.

With more Torque I can change gear earlier, also I was changing even earlier into coming onto the main straight so I didn't light the tyres up, like the new spaceframe Peugeot did and wiped it down the barrier ! That's why it sounded different.
All set for the new season starting on the Donnington GP circuit Good Friday and Saturday against a huge 40 car Thunder Saloon with the Classic Touring Car Racing Club Grid, then onto Castle Combe Easter Monday to race in the Super Saloon races with Classic & Modern Motorsport Club Southern.
I will update on the schedule for Castle Combe on Saturday evening.
For those who follow on https://www.tsl-timing.com/ Friday Qualifying is at 11.15 with the first race at 17.15 then Saturday 15.25. or Live stream https://www.youtube.com/@britishautomobileracingclub/streams
Huge thanks go to Jim Metcalfe and to Pip Gardner (PG Auto) with both working tirelessly with me through the winter to get the car sorted for this season.
Plus we have two new sponsors on board for 2024,#exedyclutch the largest clutch manufacturer in the world, plus New Zealand's #LinkECU with their electronics powering the car and we also have #TEIN
Tuning in! Go get' em! 🏁
Here's something never seen before :)
Sorry to the people who follow the car as it's a late report, but work got in the way 😉
As some will know we had to abandon the first race due to a broken rear disc then had to start from the pit lane after everyone was out on their first lap. Bizarrely I won the Class and now am joint leader in the Thunder saloon championship !
So it was off to Castle Combe for the Monday, initially having a gentle run in qualifying getting used to my new found power as unlike Donnington now we had the boost turned up, wasn't too worried about the grid position as I "thought" I would work my way up during the race having won races there before, WRONG ! The weather chucked everything at us from nice sun, torrential rain and even hailstones!! So what tyres do we run then ? Jim and Jon changed tyres twice but as my local weather man (you know who you are 🤣) was convinced the heavens were going to open, I went for wet weather tyres, WRONG 😱, got out onto a bone dry track that then stayed that way ! Even on wet no grip tyres I was straight up to 7th from 11th but as the laps went on by lap 5 I could actually smell the rubber as you will see below, my tyres were literally melting !! so I pulled off 🤬.
Race two was no better and because a car was stuck at the chicane and then a Civic punted me off under a yellow and it seemed like I only got half a lap in proper, because we trailed around behind the safety car for ever, mind you I had the bit between my teeth and over took 4 cars out of the last chicane on the run to the flag.
Plus side is, the car ran faultlessly and is good to go in three weeks' time at Cadwell Park up in Lincolnshire 👍.
Shouldn't ever break a rear disc again as I have found that with just 2.5mm off the overall diameter, I can get the RX-8 front discs on the car which are also fatter.
Jim thought they looked close to fitting and he was right
Here they are dummied up
Well done! Was wondering why you didn't show up on the screen at Donington. :sign0098:
Race Car with Pit Crew 😁
Race 2 Combe video.
Didn't really get into my stride but still saw something approaching 150 on the straight, so it now has some grunt!
I know some of you are local so maybe interested that I'm out at Brands Hatch 4th/5th May at the World GT event- After a very disappointing and very wet weekend at Cadwell Park, I will be out racing again with the Classic & Modern Motorsport Club Southern as a " Super Saloon" against what looks like a 40 car grid!
Saturday:-
11:25 - 11:45 CMMS - Super Saloons, Tin Tops & Intermarque Silhouettes Qualifying
15:40 - 15:55 CMMS - Super Saloons, Tin Tops & Intermarque Silhouettes Race 3
Sums Cadwell up, a dejected looking Jim ::)
A few pic from Clive's outing to Brands Hatch last weekend. Sadly, Christine was up to her old tricks and was holding back engine power :( Even so, Clive managed to qualify 23rd on a grid of 42.
Car 51 in the last 2 pics had a scary moment as Druid's, facing the wrong way!
Race Pics:
After the diffuser came off at Brands we are now upgrading to a big one piece diffuser as used on Radicals, so something designed in a wind tunnel rather than my garage ;) Here's the old and the new

The original was a messy, four pieces. This one is one piece from half way along the fuel tanks and should be more effective out away from the rear bumper.
Hope you find some reliability again soon

More progress, the diffusers nearly done, one more day to go.
Had to modify the exhaust which show see flame now shoot upwards.
Racecar update.
Many thanks to Pip (PG Auto) for a complete refresh of my 3 Rotor plus some more Porting while it was appart, so I should have some better low grunt off the corners. I'm going to fire up on Monday, then its off to Snetterton on Thursday for an all day test session to run the engine in. All this is in preparation for our biggest event of the year at Brands for the Super Tourer event 29th-30th June
Not long now i feel the corner is turning...

Ok this is the big one 😀👍Car is nearly ready just the finishing touches to do, so lets go racing with the Classic Touring Car Racing Club in the Thunder series this weekend at Brands Hatch
There are two separate races meetings so you will see qualifying and two races whether you come along on Saturday on Sunday.😀👍 https://www.tsl-timing.com/event/242652
Saturday - Grand Prix circuit
Qualifying:- 9.25
Race 2:- 12.10pm
Race 8:- 15.50pm
Sunday - Indy Circuit
Qualifying:- 11.15
Race16:- 14.35pm
Race 22:- 17.40pm
Race Car Update. After being disappointed at missing the last Brands round because the gear box broke the day before in testing, we should be out for the Classic Touring Car Racing Club Snetterton round on the 17/18 of August.
The TVR Tuscan Gear box with Glebe dog internals was totally dead and literally every component bar the casing has been replaced because two teeth broke and destroyed everything. On top of that I stripped the Diff to change the Ratio and found a broken plate and with no plates available,
I have also had to buy a new Kazz diff assembly. Car will be finished tomorrow and then off to test next Saturday at Brands.
All up n running again ready for a full day test session at Brands on Saturday, to see if the different tighter Diff set up, different Rear Diff Ratio and revised suspension mods work.
Time table for Saturday
Not a bad day at Brands today, 66 trouble free laps, My self devised double rear anti roll to combat the tight rear diff has worked OK. Running on low boost at 52 seconds, it's still a way off where I want the car to be, but once its been back on Pip's Dyno these times should come down.
Out again at Brands next weekend on the Sunday for a one day event Qually and two Races.
Great news! I'm hoping to get down to Brands next Sunday :icon_thumleft:

Stunning! :great:
Christine. has thrown a hissy fit AGAIN !
Getting ready for Thruxton this weekend, Pip kindly slotted me in for a Dyno run to sort a few things out for me and the Diff exploded !!! 😱
Here are the parts she spat on the floor 🤬
I normally build my own diffs but this time I entrusted this one to a local transmission company and it would appear that the Crown Wheel bolts have come loose Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, no racing this weekend then 😢
Unbelievable bad luck! But, as you reported elsewhere, better this happened on the dyno than on track. Who knows what the result of that happening would have been ???
Last race out for 2024 for "Christine" with the Classic & Modern Motorsport Club Southern at Silverstone this Sunday, racing in the CMMC Ashstone MEP Saloons and Tins Tops.

Well done Clive. A superb brace of results :sign0098:
I missed the first race as Gwyn and I were out, but followed the 2nd race live. Just brilliant to hear you and your car feature so frequently in the commentary (even if the commentator occasionally seemed to get your name wrong, "Mr Raynsford" ;D ).
... and the post race interviewer mistook you for Martin Reynolds too :))

must be happy with that result.

Yes Jon, Happiest I have been in a long time at a race meeting and here's the report you may have seen already with much more to come as even with the map not right we were pulling 146 mph down the pit straight >:D .
BTW bizarrely just by keep finishing I ended up 3rd in the Thunder Saloon Championship (Class A)
Real good event to end the season to go into 2025. Damn good hard racing against the many BMW M3's etc, ending up with two x second place wins overall. 🏆🏆
Couldn't match the pace of the Ex works Holden Aussie Supercar (pictured) but I joked to Alex that I at least kept him in sight in the second race.
Happyish with a 1.02 in both races, which means I got all the speed I could out of the car on the day, bearing in mind that it's still not fully mapped due to the diff exploding on the Dyno and is so super rich and petrol fuming, producing flames so big the car was checked before the second race to see if anything could catch light on the back of the car.
This picture shows the BMW M3 of Paul Watson that I fended off all day that gave me some really hard but enjoyable racing (the best I have had all year) He admitted that the only place he had any chance was Luffield and the only way he could get close was a real proper banzai on the brakes, but then could only follow me though as I know where to place my car so he couldn't dive bomb me, we both had a brilliant race though. 😀👍
:D
,
Took all year, but we found the sharp end of the grid ;) .
More pictures popped up from Silverstone

As above finally got the 3 Rotor RX-8 performing fairly well at Silverstone recently and even though I was fighting understeer, still managed to finish 2nd in both Races against this Aussie Supercar that's won every race its entered this season. I so hope the upgrades work over the winter will get the car one up from this position in 2025

Thanks for that appreciated.
Mainly the going forward is due to the excellent help I have around me :great:
Just had it confirmed that I finished 3rd in Class A of the Thunder Saloon Championship, so this is a thank you to everyone who has helped and supported my "efforts" this season.
With the potential that was unlocked for my last Race of the Season at Silverstone, I am so looking to better this next season
Congratulations!
I'm looking foreward to next season!
Realised I hadn't updated about the car for a while. In the search for more front end grip for next season , We are modifying the car to take 12" wide wheels on the front to match the rears. Cars going to look very different once the front wings are stretched out to cover these big un's
Wow :13:
Its Finally coming back to life so we should be OK for the test on the 18th at Brands 😁. Complete new diff assembly built and plates freed off so it should help understeer that's plagued the car since the heavier 3 Rotor engine went in, plus a front geometry revision and those wide 11" wheels now up front 😁 Found the Manifold cracked after Silverstone, so the manifold assembly has been repaired and strengthened plus a revamp of the rest of the system, Next weeks task is to get the front wings modified to cover those wide wheels 😉 p.s you will see that the bolts are wired because last time I farmed the diff out and they left bolts loose and the diff big hole in the casing was the result/ This time as normal I built this one like I normally would !
Glad to see all going well with preparation for your test day :icon_thumleft:
Finally, the car is ready to go for the all day Tuesday Test @ Brands. All for wheel arches required surgery, the fronts to accommodate the 11" wheels and the rears to take the bigger diameter tyres which will raise the gearing on certain tracks, after finding I was running out of revs in 5th @ 150 mph on the straight @ Silverstone 😉. Going to be interesting to see if the RX-7 FD style front geometry advised by Pip, as well as the Diff being loosen off cures the understeer that's also been making the car slow and meant early braking into corners ---------we shall see 🙄
All parked up at Brands for a full day Test session tomorrow, for Christine's final shakedown before the season starts at Donnington next weekend.
Exciting times! :great:
Banned "again". I really couldn't make up what happened today 😉. After 10 laps and got black flagged and told to see the clerk of the course 😟. She explained and this is word for word. "I cannot let you back out on the track because your car is producing flame that is dangerous and it could scare drivers who may crash because of it" 😂 I am not joking, this really was said !!!!🤔 I tried to explain that the car is entering its eleventh season and as it a Rotary it makes flame on the overrun and as I was only on partial throttle apparently it was making more than normal. Next came she had never heard of a Rotary engine and why was I not using full throttle so it did not do it, hang full throttle everywhere in the wet, see, I really couldn't make it up 🙄 Anyway Pip and my friend Malcolm spent ages taking fuel out of the program on the cars ECU (thank you) and as we had made a physical change I was allowed out again in the afternoon 😁 Plus sides to the were, the day was just a systems check to make sure all was OK for next weekend the 22nd & 23rd @ Donnington for the start of the new season in Thunder saloons and all is well, so off we go 👍 Anyway Flame, no idea what they are talking about 😂
Glad to be able to help out today, and to see you so pleased with the car after your last test session.
I hope you have a great first race of the season next weekend at Donington :icon_thumleft:

Gearbox broke again! Game over after 3 laps of qualifying
Oh dear, Christine strikes again :(
So sorry your weekend was ruined, especially as the car was looking great during testing at Brands.
I hope you can get it sorted for the next race.
Next race is now cancelled so with nothing in place yet as regards a gearbox,
Now "aiming" for Brands in four weeks time.
What torque is the Glebe rated for and how close to the limit are you?
I know some of the bmw auto boxes are highly rated 8speeds.
I believe the diesel 335 box is good for 700ft/lb.
Sent from my SM-S908B using Tapatalk
Sorry Jon, I missed this one. The owner at Gleeb rung me to say that the box was on the limit at 495lbs !! My answer was, had I known that I would not have spent stupid money having the box rebuilt knowing it was not fit for purpose in August last year, just three events ago.
Looked at the cheap auto boxes a while back that will take the power but they weigh in at like two tons and the ratios are all wrong.
Talking to Quaife ATM :(

Quote from: boosted on March 29, 2025, 01:07:03 PMQuaife not got the best customer service.....
Ahh, but I can go and bang on their door as they are only around three miles from where I keep the race car ;)
Had I wanted to wait months I could have got a Jericho box from America and adapted it in somehow, with the Quaife box they do an RX-7 adaptor kit so apart from modding the prop, it will go straight in.
Plus they have one already in a 1000 brake RX-7 and its been been proven at over 1,200 whp!
https://youtu.be/kIdGm6FT1o4
Great news.

The never ending story continues, I mean development ;D
With not much to do on the race car while waiting for the new Quaife box to be built I have revised the rear suspension.
With the complete revised front suspension and wider 11" wide wheels with only the two warm up laps the car was oversteering like mad !
So we need a much softer rear end which hopefully will mean more grip overall.
Today I did away with the double rear anti roll bars, so now down to one "normal" Racing Beat bar fitted, also I have fitted 20Kilo lighter springs on the back.
Fingers crossed my thoughts and changes work, we shall see ;)
Big step nearer to getting Christine back Racing today. I finally have my new gearbox and Quaife even supplied a beautifully made adaptor plate so it bolts straight onto the back of my engine, or any RX-7 FD or RX-8 with a 5 Speed Bellhousing. Just waiting for a couple more parts then we can get it into the car 😁
All set for Speed Fest @ Brands tomorrow, racing with another two RX-8's.
Using this odd race for me to get used to a new sequential gear box and suspension set up, so effectively a test session.
I will be "Racing"😉 in with the SpeedFest Silhouettes WDRC (Welsh club)

Can't find any streaming from the WDRC ("Welsh Drag Racing Club"? :D ) online, but will be cheering offline!
Good day Bad Day 🙄 Gear box is amazing and the rear suspension changes worked with the car much easier to drive and we got pole into the 51's 😀 with what felt like more to come,
Because there was so much flame
https://www.tiktok.com/@racingb.../video/7513230131435982102
we decided to put a different map in, WRONG we lost 2 seconds a lap with the car !! 10 minutes in the car developed a bad misfire on boost, so limped home in second place. Back in the pits we found a big oil leak which will mean the engine has to be pulled out to be repaired,
Awesome pictures! Fun commentary on the video too ;D
Nice to catch up this morning on the phone to find out what had happened....
Engines apart no damage except for the cracked Centre Plate that you can see arrowed.
Drove up to Pips to collect the broken centre plate, then drove across to this company in Coalville to have it welded. https://www.castironwelding.co.uk/about-us/ which will hopefully be soon.
I have found Mazda Motorsports have had a limited run made, trouble is they want 9K just for the plate !!
9K?!? ??? Well, no-one claims racing is a cheap hobby, but that's insane!
Bugger :angry5: . Best bet for a new fat plate would probably be billet these days aye
Well finally thanks to Steve's excellent machining work on the Mill (DS Engineering) Pip's expertise and a specialist Cast Iron Welding company in the Midlands we now have a usable 20B Centre Plate.
Other than the machining that Steve sorted, the biggest worry was that the plate was heated to 600 degrees for eight hours before welding and was scared that the plate would warp, but its OK
Other issue was re-drilling the oil way that feeds the centre bearing but Steve sorted it :great: This was a pig to work out drilling it off-set to the dowel hole, hence the white witness line.
The alternative with nothing used for sale anywhere was 9K from Mazda Motorsports who are making these long discontinued plates in small batches just for racers!
Yes, I know that there are Alloy plates out there but the Aussies warned me off these for circuit racing, telling me that the Alloy plates cause overheating. OK I suppose for road and Drag Racing but not proper track racing.
I will keep you all posted.
Jim my No1 wizardy man has made the RX-8 much more professional looking, spending two days with me wiring and programming in this new Haltech Dash that even came with a remade RX-8 brinicle to locate the dash.
He even programmed the super clear dash colours to be the colours of the car. Yellow, Blue and Red.
Best of all he programmed it the read Racing Beat Europe on start up/ No excuses to say I cant see the revs or what gear I am in. Thank you Jim :great:
It's alive again😁Thanks go to Pip for an excellent engine refresh, Steve for helping wrestle the engine back in the bay. Special thanks to Jim's James Metcalfe dedication for spending all day yesterday with me after travelling all the way from Wakefield to me here in Kent (again) to help get the car up n running👍.
Great news!!! :great:
Well done to everyone involved :13:
Good Test Day today, sorted a few electrical gremlins and covered 38 Laps, so all ready to go racing tomorrow 😁
Bit of an update about Christeen ----------and the fight goes on.
Took the car up to Pip Wednesday for mapping and immediately the throttle issue that has plagued the car since the 3 Rotor went in reared up properly this time rather than a reset it packed up,
Jim kindly robbed his Race Car, drove over to Pips and fitted it and immediately no more bad starting issues ect.
Pip believes that the faulty fly by wire throttle body has been causing all sorts of engine problems, indeed two years back after it would not work at Snetterton, we put the throttle into a set up mode, taking the safety parameters off, I then drove onto the track and Christeen really bit me, going full open throttle causing me to crash.
As said that manky throttle body has caused issues for a long long time!
So its now on the Dyno and all is going OK till Pip got to 6000 revs then the next disaster. The car is now shaking itself apart, so game over for now Grrrrrrrrrrrrr
All the indications are that the propshaft is out of balance so until I can get the prop back on the machine the week after next we don't know what's causing this issue
Christ clive when are you gonna get some good luck ?

With thanks to Pip PG Auto for his ongoing help and Northwest prop shafts who have built a much beefier shaft for Christine to replace the bent poorly made thing another company supplied, so finally we will be out again at Silverstone on Sunday.
Going to be a long day with qualifying @ 9am first Race 11.45 and then the last Race of the day 4.20
Loving the Christine graphic :)) :))
Wasn't a bad day on low power, picked the wrong tyres so abandoned Race I and started from the back of the grid. In Race two, managed a class win to get a trophy and 2nd overall holding off an ex works Bathhurst Holden 😁
Race 2 - OK with the result being 20mph down and almost 4 seconds a lap slower than last year, You will see, I resisted going after Rod Birley and just decided to keep the big old Holden at bay.

Thanks to Pip Gardner Good mapping session Tuesday, means we are good to go for Brands Hatch Sunday 26th with some Real Power 😁 Only little hiccup was when an Intercooler pipe blew off Wow see the clamp fly.
We had no issues other than using a HUGE amount of fuel but Pip found 680 BHP with 495 ft lbs of Torque so that should help push it along fairly fast ::)

Great end to the race season with a win and a good hard race with Anton's BMW also knowing we have more pace to come from the car for next season 😉.
Thanks must go to the Racing Beat Europe Team I have around me of Jim, Pip, Steve, Philip, Malcolm, Nigel, Ellen, and my Lisa who all pay an integral part in getting me out there racing 👍.
I would also thank you for not only all the comments and support but all of you who follow "Christine's" exploits all year round.
Already looking forward to the 2026 season. 😁
Success at last! Well earned! Congrats!

Good day at Pips on the Dyno yesterday, the car very nearly overloaded and damaged the Dyno packs plus the screen monitoring everything was even showing red warnings, indeed one sprung an oil leak !
So what you see on the attachments is it and the culmination of three years work from all those around me.
Car should be a different animal with not only more power and torque but also we have gone from a 4.4 rear diff ration to a 4.1 which should give it more legs, mind you it was pulling 150mph at Silverstone !
Thanks must go to Jim, Pip and Steve for all their work getting the project this far, not forgetting a very understanding Lisa
Test session coming up on Wednsday 11th March Closed Wheel Testing - Day
- Group - Open Pit Lane
Wow, that's some figueres! :sign0098:
Only another 80 bhp now and you have power matching the start number! ;)
Looking forward to seeing it in action!
:13:
I'm planning to go along to the test session to help as best I can, and take some photos and video.

We are nearly there, working on a 10% frictional loss through the transmission we see 775 BHP @ the flywheel :love4:
Little update.
Been working on making a flat floor to find some more downforce, just got the other side to attach this week.
The idea is to try and get some fluid air back to the tunnels in the diffuser, so now the flat floor links directly to the diffuser so air cant swirl around in front of the fuel tanks etc.
All this is preparing for the Open Pit Lane Test Day @ Brands Wednesday the 11th to see if the car is driving better with it's remap, plus get used to the higher 4.1 diff ratio change, which means I will be in different gears compared to the 4.4 that came out.
BTW entrance is free if anyone wants to come along/
Christine Update. Sadly, no Donnington next weekend!. Test day at Brands Wednesday was going to plan then 19 laps in, changed down and BANG along with lots of clanking noises 😱.
I thought the diff had exploded but as soon as I started work on the car I saw a busted drive shaft and the diff sitting at an angle 🤬.
The pictures below tell the rest of the story.
On top of that when the lorry snatched me it tore out the front towing eye and somehow damaged the radiator thats badly leaking lea, so with waiting for parts no Donnington, Damn 😢.
One day we will get an exorcism done on Christine, but till then she continues to Haunt Me !!😈
Hmmm. An exorcism followed by a name change might do the trick? 🤔 Perhaps avoid naming her after evil Stephen King characters?
Shakespeare famously asked "What's in a Name". Well, my dad, who didn't fancy a cat in the house, jokingly named ours Cat Astrophe. I'll spare you the gory details, but –by word magic or not– the poor thing (or perhaps rather fate) took its name quite literally...
I was so sorry to witness this early end to your test day on Wednesday :( . The car seemed to be going well (and sounding great) before this happened.
You've got so much power and torque now that the weaker links are being exposed
Not sure if your diff survived, and the propshaft too? Hopefully they did?
The radiator leak is a strange one :dontknow:
Many thanks for the help from yourself and Andrew it was appreciated.
Had a quick look today and it looks like when the lorry snatched and jolted the car it just upset a hose ::) .

Please dont tell us what happend to the cat :(
...a few years later when we got a dog, dad thought he'd make up for the unfortunate cat naming and named the dog after an encient Greek Centaur, famous for his wisdom. Its highly unlikely that made the dog any more clever than your average labbie, though. He was happy, stubborn, and (mostly) daft as a brush. Naming magic clearly has its limits... :))
;D ;D ;D

Todays Race report.
Bit of a strange day that became mostly about tyres 🙄.
The day was bitterly cold with like an Artic wind chill and a track no where near its best meaning it took ages to get any heat into the Michelins I use, to start going anything like quick and got beaten up on both race starts because of cold tyres, but as you may have seen, once they had heat, particularly in the second race I pumped in fastest lap after fastest lap 😀.
Cars running fine but with no real issues, however after the race we found we had an intercooler issue that "probably" lost me 50 BHP+ and that was 50BHP that today could have made all the difference between winning and losing.
Lastly, got to say I was lucky I did not spin when the lights went green on the second race because as I floored it the cold tyres spun up like I was trying to do a burn out making me lift off the throttle making me loose all momentum into the first corner.
Plusses are a second and a third place win and the car's in one piece and ready to go for the next event and very pleased to come away with the fastest laps in both Races 😁

Race 2 above. Here's race 1:
Brilliant, that first edit showed more of Clive's car than the leaders ;D
What an excellent find, thank you :sign0098:
As it's been a while, I thought I would bring an update for all who follow Christine's race exploits. Repairs are coming along after the crash at Mallory and I am revising the nose cone to Mazda RX-8 R3 Spec which will give the car an update whist also looking completely different.
The Engines getting an upgrade as well.
We are changing the heavy cast iron centre plate for a custom Alloy plate being built in Australia by Pac Performance a hugely respected name in the Rotary world and will end up not only loosing some weight but also have a much stronger 3 Rotor Engine .
Sadly, going to miss at least three events at Brands, but hoping for a strong finish for the last races of the season.
Here's the new front end coming along and a picture of the old front for comparison.
