do all rx7s take a good few turns in the ignition to get going. my turned about 5 or 6 time then started. and i left it to start up fully and tapped the gas and it popped like a backfire sound. is this normal or am i in trouble.

any help much appreciated
cheers

Rixio

Sounds like low compression...how many miles has it done?

Frankie

The backfiring or popping when warming up is normal if you blip the accelerator.  Its just unburnt fuel as they run very rich during this time but as Rixio has advised you might need to get a compression test done regarding your slow starting.

Mine starts first turn of the key hot or cold so it does hint at a problem Colin but could be any of problems!

Poor replies... :2Rolleyes

Hard starting can be many things...  more infomation is required for anyone to give you better help...  Hot starts or cold, or after running?   Whats the mileage, whats the set up of the car, is it modded ??????

Backfiring when cold or warming up is also not normal......

cold starts, after i took it for a spin yesterday it took ages to start the compression light and temp light were on, i gave it 10 mins to cool down then she started. no mods, its a 94 type rZ

if its bad compression what does that point to straight away. the engine was done at 52k in japan and has 63k on it now so surely it dont need a rebuild or tips.

Mileage is only a rough guide to engine condition...Just depends on how they\'ve been driven and looked after....You need to get a compression check carried out by a rotary specialist to be sure.
FD or not FD? that is the question.

Do you have an Aftermarket Boost gauge fitted?? If so where does it sit on Idle? and at what RPM?

That whould give you a rough idea of the Engines Condition but if you do a search there is lots of examples of this sort of thing that have turned out not to  need a rebuild.

But stock fd\'s have been known to go anywhere between 30.000 miles and a 100.000 it all dpends on how its been treated. Also when\'s the last time it was serviced? bad Plugs will cause this sort of poor starting??

I really dont think the popping is necessarily a problem. See this old thread http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5295&highlight=popping

Mine has less than 4000 miles since its rebuild and before buying my car I looked at several and they did the same.

My REX does not backfire or pop at all, about 12 k on a rebuild, so surely something is not right, surely any igniting of the fuel shoud be in the housings not in the exhaust pipe!

NO BOOST GAUGE LAD.
SHES GOING A LOT BETTER TODAY. STARTIN FIRST TIME. STILL THE ODD POP STARTIN FROM COLD AND IF I PULL UP AT LIGHTS AND SIT THERE FOR A WHILE SHE MIGHT POP SOMETIMES.

Sounds like mine did when I needed new plugs. I\'d try that first mate, it\'s worth a try for the cost, and you can do it yourself. you can get them from above but it\'s easier from below IMO.
