Sorry we\'re not all technical Gods like you matey, you\'re a regular hero. :Laugh

Quote from: TRexHard starting can be many things...  more infomation is required for anyone to give you better help...  Hot starts or cold, or after running?   Whats the mileage, whats the set up of the car, is it modded ??????

Backfiring when cold or warming up is also not normal......

Seconded on the backfiring thing - you should only really get pops and bangs when fully warmed up (i.e. exhaust hot enough to ignite unburnt fuel).  Usually you can solicit a few rumbles by tapping the throttle but much depends on aftermarket mods.

Are you running with a cat, upgraded ECU, etc?

As Marky B says - try changing the plugs or at least seeing what state they are in.  Bit of a pig of a job though, you\'ll need a short handled plug wrench.

Hi Colin,

Your car should start with virtually the flick of the key.

One thing that comes to mind is do you let it warm up properly as it may have flooded just slightly if you hadn\'t, this would mean it would take a few turns to start.

Also if you blipped the throttle when cold you had dumped even more fuel into the engine that would have been in cold start mode at the time, so yes it would have popped due to too much fuel.

BTW always leave the car to warm up fully and let it come off its cold start cycle ( you will hear the revs drop to normal tickover) or you have the possibility of flooding the car and making it imposable to restart

Hope this helps
All the best Clive

Mine tends to pop a couple of times as it drops off the cold start cycle down to normal idle revs, although I don\'t think its always done this, but seems to these days.
FD or not FD? that is the question.

Not a smart arse Iain, I just do not get caught up diving into a post like people in here and offering advise before knowing the full story..  As that can make things worse by giving incorrect advise..
Hope you don\'t go to the doctor and tell him \'I have a cough\'... without asking more questions he tells you, you have 2 weeks to live and gives you a load of advise how to spend your last few days!

I also doubt that mazda or any manufacture will make/design a car to backfire when cold... lol

You guys need to get your cars fixed........ http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008_ZNxdm798AXGB" target="_blank">http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_1_102.gif" alt="Too Funny" border="0">

Out of the factory they have catalytic convertors and more restrictive exhausts.

Guess these guys have problems as well then...

im not too clued up on the ins and outs but having owned mine for about 6 months, i can say this.

on start up after it has warmed up, it will pop loudly a few times as i reverse off my drive and then for the first 10secs of driving on strong boost. after that all is well and it behaves itself with only the odd pop here and there. it has always done this since day one of ownership and has had no ill effects so far.... touch wood.

TRex

Ahh, you done a search on \'popping\'...

Note I specifically stated \'backfiring\'...... big difference!  ;)

Popping on a modded car is not uncommon..
Backfiring on the other hand(as clearly stated) when cold or idling, then as said earlier.. get your car checked out.. :Thumbs-up

Quote from: GrizzlyDo you have an Aftermarket Boost gauge fitted?? If so where does it sit on Idle? and at what RPM?

That whould give you a rough idea of the Engines Condition but if you do a search there is lots of examples of this sort of thing that have turned out not to  need a rebuild.

Out of interest, what amount of vaccum is vgood/good/bad to read at what RPM on idle?

Also, how do these values correspond to regular compression test numbers?

Cheers, Paul.
