Yes, I agree with Clive. However, Westy is so light that diff wont get big beating at track...

I think Sierra unit is crap. I would choose Beemer unit. Much stronger, lots of CWPs and better LSDs. And most important, better setup options...

Power is nothing without control. Weight is enemy of performance, handling and braking.

Ever used one in a really light car? (500-600kg) works really well as the viscous unit is very progressive and 'gentle', conventional units do not tend to work as well as the plate types are a little 'grabby'.  Other option is a proper non-plate torque biasing diff with the correct setup but you can at least double the budget for that.

I can promise you go faster in a westifeld, why? Because I have not failed to finish above the one in my class of the sprint championship...  Really good grip of the line, want's to kill you in the bends (a lot like the current car then Jon!)

But I do like them, one of Jeremy Phillips best... shame he has stopped making/designing cars now, a legend!

Imagine that with the new supercharged motor they have with 300+hp!!!!

Iv just found a thread from 2005 and they are talking about a de Dion IRS? They are also saying that the money spent on converting would be better spent on proper damping for the live axle etc and that the live axle is best for a race track as less bumps etc and the IRS is better for road use?? Confused!  I would say IRS is better no matter what due to its adjustability?

They also talk about unsprung and sprung weight differences between the two? I have no idea but the have equal amounts of pros and cons??

Caterham's use De-Dion and it works very very well, Westfield don't... the early Westies use a live axle (like Jon's) and can be made to work well with expensive damping and very good setup... in theory you can make it work better than IRS for track work... but...

IRS is very easy to setup, works well with more cost effective clubman level daming, is more forgiving to poor setup, is more forgiving to poor surfaces (you can ride the kerbs without fear of death)...

The rear end needs sorting that has become apparent after putting the fd around combe that the westy is very lively.
