Hey peoples. Been a while since i\'ve posted on here, mostly because I\'ve been unsure about if i could keep my FC on the road. But thanks to a life line in the form of a cheap daily hack, the FC is now staying and becoming a bit of a running project/ fun car.

I\'m pondering on either drifting it, or using it for track days and such. Does anyone know of any affordable ways of getting the car prepared for track use, and if there\'s any way of getting a few extra horses from the naturally aspirated power plant?

Regards

Yes put a turbo on it. If you are wanting to drift then I would suggest a hydraulic hand brake being the most essential part you need. As it will make it a lot easier to initiate a drift.

Extra horses from an EGI would entail a high flow air filter and mainly exhaust and porting work, I would also sort out the cooling and fit electric fans behind the rad that you can switch on 100% of the time when drifting, radiators only work if air flows through them, going sideways lots means that the rad isn\'t really getting any air through the front lol

Have considered forced induction but i would have to change the whole engine as the egi has higher compression rotors :( How easy are hydraulic hand brakes to install?

lol fair point. Would i be right in thinking that most electric fan kits would suit? Also, for extra horses, i\'m already running a straight through exhaust with equal length headers. Un uprated induction kit is next on the agenda. Any recommendations?

One more thing (sorry for all the questions) if i were to track it, are regulation roll cages available?

Someone supercharged an EGi a while back, looked mental, no idea how well it worked though. Lower \'power\' turbo will be OK too btw...

And screw the h/handbrake suggestion above - I\'ve never used or needed one! And it\'ll teach you bad habits - when you\'re learning stick to flicking and clutch kicking. What you need is a welded diff... and that\'s it! Handbrakes end up essential at competition level though. Strip the car out AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. This and the welded diff will make it possible to drift.

Progressively these help:
Coilovers
Bucket seat/harness
Lock spacers on the rack

Roll cages aren\'t needed outside of competition. I\'m using a HKS mushroom filter on my TII, and it works well. But it\'s just what I had lying around!

quoted for truth as ive had a hydro for too long now and its become the worst habit ever although wanding it in for ages is pretty fun

cut spring weld diff job done

dthebuk

personally I wouldn\'t spend too much on it if you want to drift it.

I suggest you weld the diff, cut the springs, rear steer eliminators and fit a bucket.

then drift it untill it dies/you get bored and then go for something with more oooomph

:D

also regarding the hydro, you wont wanna initiate with a hydro in an EGI, you want to clutch kick it everywhere

Thanks for the info guys :) Got speaking to a couple of mates who are big into the drifting lark, and as much as i\'d love to give it a stab, i\'m not keen on pranging the car too much. Think the track racer route may be a bit safer... my driving skills depending :Giggle It\'ll also be good to race it, as there\'s not enough FCs racing :( I\'ll keep it on the mind though, should be going to a drift day soon, so may have a dabble in the \'play pen\' and get some practice in.

Anyone know any good roll cage places near Portsmouth should the track day route win over drifting?

papercutout

Just so you know, if you do go and have a go in a play pen, with an open diff it will be CRAP. Like, really, really bad and you\'ll think you and the car suck at drifting and never want to do it again.
Which probably isn\'t true, so it might be worth trying to get hold of the MX5 torsen LSD and chucking one of those in there - it\'ll help both for drifting and track days.

Nickson Motorsport is based somewhere in Surrey and his quality of work is truly amazing - he\'s one of the few fabricators I\'d trust to build me a cage. Search google, or search him on driftworks.

dthebuk

woudln\'t be too worried about pranging it unless you\'re drifting it on public roads.

+1 for the mx5 lsd

+1 for nickson, had a good few dealings with him

Awesome, thanks guys. The MX5 lsd would be the one from the Eunos yeah? From what I gather it\'s a simple install into an FC diff housing?

dthebuk

I believe its from the 1.8 car. I\'ve never actaully seen anyone do the conversion. so you might need a few other bits from the mx5, but yes it should fit in the diff housing

No idea how simple it is. The FC diff is a pain in the arse though. Its hard to do with without droppig the subframe
