haha, I saw the first hole appearing as the wire wheel went over it and went as gentle as i could, but there was no denying it was well rotten! :P:P

Varioud parts of this car have been waxoyled at some stage. It seems where ever there is waxoyl, there\'s no metal just rust :(

Not the end of the world, and I\'d rather do this bit properly now and not have to re-patch it later as its right by the fuel tank. Much easier to do it now while its a bare shell at the back end.

Very helful thread showing the areas of repair.
Good repair jobs! Steve-A, looks as if i better brush up on my welding skills ready for my new arrival
Lead me not into temptation, I can find it myself...
But i can always do with some help now due to, my advancing years!

Steve-A

Haha, hopefully seeing as your new arrival has plenty of MOT left, it should be fair solid down there. :)

I think between this thread an Cliffs Goldie thread we cover all the places they get rot.

Your\'e probably not too far wrong with that statement Steve. Only glad I\'ve not got an issue with the front windscreen nor sunroof drains which cause no end of corrosion probs and are more difficult to resolve with no easy fix. Makes good reading though will plenty of graphics to visit lest we forget something later on.
Keep up the good work.

Quote from: CHC;737348Happy New Year Steve - great job you are doing there.
With rgds the front driver side sill - On my previous rex in the 80\'s I was using the standard sissor jack when the car rolled foward (can\'t remeber what caused it now) and the result was as you have found. So perhaps this is what had happened.

From what I\'ve seen, a poly bush set on eBay is currently about £240 so the US set seems damn good.

Keep up the good work.

Was looking at front end of Goldie yesterday and found similar problem to what we briefly discussed earlier this month.
The lower sill section is bowed upwards (see photo) - is this what you were talking about? Having surveyed the area my thoughts are that somebody tried to jack up the car in the wrong area so being no support in this area, gravity played its part with the end result.

That is pretty much exactly what I was talking about yes.

But Rexanne is bowed up at the correct jacking point. Thats why I was a little bothered about the strength.

Yeh - I think it has been a similar scenario to mine originally, how much trouble in years to come?  no idea.

Not cool!

The strong winds last night managed to lift the gazebo remains out from under the stack of wheels , and in the process flip my box containing neatly organised trays of bolts and parts from the back end of the car upside down and spread the bolts across the garden!

Many many bad words have been said this morning :(

Havent done any more to her in a few days, been working and prepping the mx5 for sale, which is now is. Weather forecast isn\'t promising for getting more body work done this weekend, I might carry on with bushes and start prepping and painting the suspension links etc.

That\'s a ****ard mate :( - can\'t trust the english weather unfortunately.  Just make sure you pick up all the bits (hope you haven\'t lost any).

Made a few good little steps of progress across yesterday and this morning. No more metal work progress and welding in these winds wouldn\'t work out too well, so I\'ve been focusing on other bits and bobs that need doing.

Yesterday I started by attacking the rest of the bushes for the rear end.

I did something a little different to before, I still put side load on the bushes using the exhaust flange/sockets but then instead of working it back and forth till it came free, I just cranked the vice down then used a blow torch to heat the end of the suspension link. The outside edge of the rubber bush melted a bit and it popped right out. Ended up taking less than 5 mins a bush that way :3gears-lh

I\'m going to take the links, along with anything else I can prep in time, with me on friday when I\'m working with Bill. I\'ll make use of the bead blasting cabinet at lunch time to clean them up :)

I then started to clean out the metal dust and rubbish from inside the car, seeing as there\'s no more metal work to do that will get the car full of crap.

This morning I started by spreading some panel seal over the welds visible from the inside.

Cliff - You may want to look away now.....

Now I figured I should put some top coat over the weld through primer and panel seal to protect it from absorbing any moisture etc. I had no paint at all here and haven\'t got round to having any of the correct gold mixed up. My first thought was to just grab some similar gold from Hellfrauds, after all its just gonna be hidden under the seats for a while.

But then I started thinking about it more. In the big scheme of things my plan is to loose the interior and replace it with just a pair of race seats, harnesses, roll cage, etc. I\'ve always liked it when people strip interiors out when they paint the internal metal a different colour than the main body colour, somehow it looks more like its still got an interior that way, less
skeletal.

I decided on painting the interior in a dark metallic grey, then I could have silver highlights in terms of the cage and bits of dash, I thought it would compliment the gold exterior well. So I bought a can of that to top coat the rear seat area. The rear seat area would at as a good test patch!

I put the filler cap in there to get a comparison to the body colour. I\'m really pleased with how the colours go together. I think the whole interior in that colour with the silver highlights would look really nice. And for the moment the main thing is the metal is properly protected from the inside.

I then continued the cleaning out of metal dust and rubbish from Rexanne, including wiping over the dash and roof lining with a foaming interior cleaning thing.

Next up I made a huge mess in the name of tidyness!

And now I\'ve got a small space to work on the axel in the warm/light/dry of the garage.

And here I am waiting for WD40 to do its work on the brake lines. I\'m hoping to strip the axel back tonight, so I can take smaller bits to be bead blasted friday and so I can wire wheel the main axel ready to paint.

Good progress mate-thats what I am gonna do with my insides I reckon-then get the dash flocked when funds allow.

Steve-A

Yeh, flocked dashes always give that race car feel :)
