I actually agree with you on the colour Steve, it does look good - don\'t know why you didn\'t consider a brighter colour though - something in the green range perhaps hmmmm ...... well perhaps not hey. :D

:) Cheers guys. I\'m pleased with how the grey looks.

But for the stage 1 get the car on the road its gonna have the full original interior. The grey will surface again soon!

I got the axel to bits :)

Diff looks good and un-abused inside.

I\'ve read something somewhere about using an LSD from an mx5, so I might have to research that more before I put it back together!

Failed at my main task though, which was to get the brake disk guards removed so I could put them in the bead blasting pile. Looks like I\'d have to remove the wheel bearings from the driveshafts to do that, and that might not be much fun!

The grey looks good on the interior steve.
Yeah stripped interior,i like!
It\'ll be interesting to weigh all the interior you eventually junk?

Steve-A

Ah damn, looks like the mx5 diff only fits in the s3 axel :( I guess I\'ll just get it all back together and make LSD part of the second rolling improvements stage :)

Yes it will be interesting to see how much is lost. When I do loose the interior I\'d also probably do things like put in a lighter more basic stereo, pull the electric windows, and do what I can to save weight generally.

it\'s surprising how much just the door cards weigh...the easiest way to increase performance is to \'add\' lightness! Bin the lot!

Less is more!

Door cards,headlining,sound proof material,leccy window motors,rear wiper & motor,carpet,rest of trim,gas hatch struts,leccy ariel motor,all seats.
Wonder how many kg\'s that would be 70kg?

A7RXY

:rollinYou would have to add ear plugs to the weight, with all the sound proofing gone you will not need a stereo ...................:rollin

Steve-A

Yeh, keeping music at a listen-able level in the mx7 (just single layer of carpet, no other sound deadening) at motor way speeds basically involves maxing out the stereo!!

Still I do want to have music as an option! I think you can get ear defenders with headphones built in....

Cheap solution (well free really) Just listen to music on your ipod with the standard ear buds...should be more than loud enough to cancel out road noise. Failing that enjoy the sound of the 12a

It\'ll be a workshop press job Steve, and new bearings will be required.
Best mask up bearings and wire brush the backplates?

Yeah, that\'ll be the plan. The wheel beatings themselves seem fine so no point messing them up.

Time for an update :)

I\'ve been working all week, which means money :) but little time to work on car :(. Today I was working for dad though, and all the other guys finish at lunch on a friday, so O took the opportunity to make use of the sand blaster!

The parts aren\'t perfect, but they will be painted in POR15 so the main thing was just to remove loose rust etc, and this was much faster and easier than doing it with a wire wheels/sandpaper at home!

I then got home and into the garden for about 4:30 and managed to make a start on this last section of welding.

I think this has to be the most awkward place I\'ve tried to weld this car yet, and it shows! There\'s still lots to do on that piece before I\'ll be happy with it. It\'s at this stage where a 2 post lift would be amazing, as I can\'t really sit under the arch to work on it easily, and if I sit outside the arch I cant see what I\'m doing, and if I try to kinda lie under the arch I\'m working at full reach and am constantly showered in weld spatter, ahhhh it\'s all fun this restoration lark :rollin

My spacers/PCD adapters arrived in the week too :)

The difference in adapter depth matches the differences in my mis matched wheels so they should \'poke\' equally, I\'m really excited to see how the wheels will look on the car.

I made a start on cleaning up the diff casing in the week, but didn\'t get very far really. I\'ve been doing some re-search and I\'ve decided I\'m going to use a eccentric bolt/cammed bolt system to give me adjustability of the lower link length on the diff, so I can adjust the diff tilt so it won\'t bind with my lowered suspension. After a bit of research it looks like some BMWs use the exact dimensions of eccentric bolt I need, so I need to order some next week then I (with a little help from Bill maybe!) will remake the lower link mounts on the diff casing with the slotted, repositioned holes.

Here\'s a pic of the sort of set-up I mean:

I\'ve got all of tomorrows daylight hours to work on the car, so if possibly I\'d really like to get this welding all finished for a while!
