:)

I shouldn\'t have actually shown that photo!

Would you believe that the engine produces around 370fwhp.

The in-car video from the Nationals here will be available soon.  I have almost finished putting the DVD together.

I guarantee you will watch this video over and over - it is awe inspiring.

I\'ll put up another post about it - to see if anyone is interested in purchasing.

.ps Hi Bill - what is a "resonant mode in the airbox" ?  haven\'t heard of that before.

.ps Sorry Ross (GB highjacking thread!) - nice looking engine BTW.
Thanks,

Hmmm Yes, just spotted that too. Basically looks like the next intake I am planning, as a set of thobble botties off a GSXR 750 are about spot on for a 13B.

If that\'s 370HP it must be one of Guru\'s 13000 RPM jobbies. Once day I will have one of those.

I\'ll do a write up on tuned resonances sometime for you. I\'m already looking into getting some airboxes made up for throttle bodied cars.

This is probably a stupid question...

Back to turbo\'d motors. What does the plenum actually \'do\'? What difference does having  the T/B(s) before or after the plenum make? Does any one have any pics of Rotormasters 7.5s 20B FD engine bay? I\'m sure that has the T/B\'s AFTER the plenum chamber...

Interesting question, with the answer \'it depends...\'

You can view a turbocharged application in 2 ways

1. As a NA engine with boost
2. As a purely boosted engine.

Which way you chose has an effect on how you approach the problem as with 2. you just add more boost to get around any limitations. With 1. you build the most efficient NA motor you can and then add boost.

Now given that you generally run quite low boost levels with a 13B I personally tend towards 1. as the preferred method, and here you run into the first problem with the stock inlet. As supplied it is tuned to give peak efficient at arouond 4500 RPM above  which it falls off. For a road car this is perfect. For a tuned tyre shredder it isn\'t.

Anyway I digress. Throttle location affects responsiveness, mainly off boost. This can be viewed as good or bad. For example, if you just touch the loud pedal and get 4PSI boost this does not make for a happy drive in the pouring rain, but it makes a great trackday car.  (welcome to the world of drivability).

Having a large plenum increases the time taken to pressurise the system, but bear in mind that you also have intercooler and piping to pump up as well. Putting the throttle before the plenum will make for a smoother but slower build up of boost when you goose it. Putting the throttles after will generally mean you have a ready supply of pressurised air so the \'kick\' will be somewhat more abrubt.

Like I said, it depends how you want the car to behave.

Bill

P.S. This is only tickling the surface, and there are about 30 other factors I haven\'t even touched on.

Thanks Bill, its a start at least... If you have any suggested reading regarding plenum/intake considerations then please post them!

Hi Bill,

Nope - it is a //www.cityperformancecentre.com engine, only revs to 9250rpm - and it makes all that power (no centre bearing).  Rohan (Guru) is making a little more power, and Phil Laird (QLD) even more.

Look forward to your post on "tuned resonances".

.ps Rich - get yourself a copy of Corky Bell\'s book, it goes into quite a bit of detail about Plenum\'s/size required depending on power etc. etc.
Thanks,

Bill,
is that geoffs old westy i see in this old thread, i though he wrote that off!

Does it still have a 13b carb\'d engine? would have been good to see something other than a RX7 with a rotary in it.
400 BHP - 650 KG\'s = 616 BHP Per Ton of Rotary Power

That\'s the way to do it! :Thumbsup!
