There is still a fair bit of slack on the wiring, so I was hoping to undo that when the box drops down a bit (cant get my hand in there properly yet)

The clutch cover and the friction plate I can move away from the flywheel but it seems to still be attached by the pull type thing in the middle :(

Have you removed the clutch slave ?? Mine pulled away ok once it was going.

It will still look attached. The sprung plate will come away with the gearbox. Nothing should be holding it together.

I\'ll have another check once the rain goes away.  Sure I took that off :3Confused :spank

Probably best its raining as im getting a little frustrated, how can I make an engine swap last 3 full days :spank:spank:spank:Giggle

Have you got the gearbox supported? If not, the gearbox will drop slightly and the clutch will catch on the flywheel, thus not enabling you to pull it away. You have to support the gearbox when you seperate the two: in fact, not only support it, but jack it up as high as it will go.

Also, you should be able to remove the wiring with the gearbox in situ.

(Are you removing the engine, or the gearbox?)

Ricco,
I\'ve completed this task for the first time recently.

Ok so all bolts/clutch cylinder/starter motor removed, I could unplug the wiring from the harnesses (three connections) with the gearbox still fully located as the wiring connections are mounted half way down the gearbox body on the oil filler side.

Have you removed the gearstick assembly ?

Then as I was working on my own, I took the full load of the gearbox on a trolley jack and had to use a lot of pulling and wobbling to disengate the spline shaft from the clutch plate.

As the gearbox comes free, the jack needs lowering bit by bit to avoid the bulkhead.
Its very heavy and mine fell off the jack for the last half meter to ground level, but I had surrounded the whole area in layers of old carpets, padding and rags etc just in case it did fall off the jack.

Hope this helps and good luck,
PS I did mine in the pouring rain, so I bought a cheap Gazebo with two removable sides and put that over the middle/front of the car.
Still got wet from rain passing under the car, but not as wet as being in direct rain.

i did mine within 2 mins of looking at it, it was very easy to release so may be you have a problem with it, did you have any clutch issues??

i also did this within the last 2 weeks.

i had a long screw driver wedged towards the back and levered it towards the car and pop it went.

Cheers folks - there are quite a few items for me to have a go with tomorrow.

Im removing the engine (low compression & shot tubbie oil seals)  I didn\'t want to remove the gearbox but I can see me having too in the end :S  Its really frustrating me cause I did the FC one with out even a thought :Laugh

I did start with a trolley jack under the gearbox but I was just supporting the weight - didnt think it would have to be brought higher!

I traced the wire ontop of the gearbox to a clip to hold the wire in place and then it went out of sight - I assumed this stayed on the top.  Must have a better look tomorrow then :)

I didnt have any clutch issues, it was pretty sweet to be honest so hopefully the issue is just me!

Thanks for the input guys, I really appreciate the help :Thumbs-up

if you got a gap, then you defo got all the bellhousing bolts out (5 in total and one long one on the starter)...
Way i do it is jack the gearbox up at the back to raise it....
Actually heres a thought....engine mounts....check to see if they are caught in the subframe. Once the engines up in the air, i usually undo the legs from the engine so the mounts fall down off the engine giving you enough clearance to pull it forward

Ricco_04

Cool :)

I have hoisted the motor up a bit and the studs have come through the subframe so are at least clear - drop legs off seems good idea too :)

Plan of action for tomorrow :

Trace plugs on gearbox & undo them
Jack up gearbox from the rear
Hopefully this seperates engine & gearbox
Position engine craine and begin lift
Remove engine mounts (if they look like snagging)

Im sure thats all that is left (hasnt changed in 2 days work :()  Once it is out I will feel a lot better :D

Fingers crossed - day starts with more bacon butties (importand for proper strength :Giggle)

other things you might wanna check which ive seen left on before....
throttle cable, water line from bulhead to rear plate, gearbox loom...
remember the downpip will snag a fair bit on the bellhousing as well....i got little hands so i  just remove it first..

On mine there\'s a "Pinch" bolt hidden above the downpipe to cat that clamps the tail of the down pipe to the gearbox.

This one got me the last time I took my engine out. The passenger side engine mount caught on the sub frame, but i didn\'t know it. I just couldn\'t figure out for the life of me why everytime I tried to lift the engine it would pivot about on the spark plug side. Eventually I worked it out and the engine popped out no troubles. So deffo check your mounts and undo them if possible.

The gearbox eletrics should be easy: there\'s 2 10mm bolts that holds this plate on that all the plugs attach to. Undo those and drop the plate down. This makes access to the plugs easier, and you can undo them. Then there;s about two metal clips that hold the loom above the gearbox: these can just be unbent to release the loom. Then just pull that through and through on top of the engine.

I love you all! :Thumbsup!

I got some proper rest and boy did that help! :D

I was being a tit with the gearbox wiring - 1st job this morning - 5 mins including the 2 hooks :spank

Checked around the engine and all was undone that needed to be.

Scratches head and thinks of when Top Gear built the Cateram - Ahhhhh the Pianist - "garage is on the kok" (or drive in my case!)

Dropped the car as low as possable, and gave the engine a yank!  YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Out she comes! :Party :Party :Party :Party :Party :Party :Party :Party :Party :Party :Party :Party :Party

Thank you guys, you have really helped in my days of need ;) :Thumbs-up:Thumbs-up:Thumbs-up

Excellent! Glad to see you sorted it eventually. You now only have one week to sort it for rotorstock! :D
