Hi All,

First post and thought i had better introduce myself. My names Jason, but peeps have called me dboy online and offline since for about the last 22 million years, so much so that i even have dboy persoanlised into my bike leathers.

Reason for joining is of course a love of the RX7. I recently sold my lovely BMW 744 (aplian tweaked) and moved from just south of Leeds in Yorkshire to a lovely 100year old cottage in Townhill, just outside Dunfermline in Fife.

Finally persuaded the missus that once the house in Leeds sells then i can get my dream car the RX-7, providing she gets her Lotus Elise. Fair enough i said and so the research began.

Having little knowledge of the rotary engine excep for its renown capabilities i started looking around for some good forums / communities that might be willing to help me in my search for a car and also with any issues i might have. Its important to have a good community that get together when possible as well.

Well that little quest for information led me here to you guys, so last thursday i joined the forum and began furtievly reading up on what i could to start making my decision on what to go for.

First a bit about me so you can decide wether i would be welcome in your great community

I am basically a 34 year old adrenalin lovin IT geek. Been a contractor in the IT market for a bout eight years now, owned lots of nice rides, recently got rid of my BMW 744, but still got my baby a Ducati 998 Testastretta. a one liter v-twin of immense proprtions.

What i am hoping you guys will help me with over the coming months is to decide on what to buy RX-7 wise. At the moment i dont know wether to get a project car ie spend about 4 or 5k on purchase and have another 4 or 5k to make her my own (including rebuilding her) or do i just bite the bullet and spend 8 to 10k on somethin like rixio\'s ride, which had my jaw dropping when i saw it.

anyway i figure whatever i decide there i will look for a \'92 - \'94 Jap imported FD3 just love those two rear seats...... think my mind is set towards a single turbo conversion as i know there is more room to play with power wise.

So basically guys and gals a huge hello from me, hope you can help me on my quest. Also any members who are around the dunfermline area that fancy meeting up and showing me round their pride and join and giving me some tips on what to look for would be great.

Is their any decent rotary support in Scotland ??

Cheers all.

Hi dboy,

Welcome to Scotland and to MRC. Really there aint that many of us up here so the nearest rotary specialist is WGT in Middlewich. As you\'re planning on a single turbo you would probably be better getting one that has already had the bulk of the work done as it is by far the cheaper route. The downside to that is you don\'t always know who has done the work and wether it has been done to a good standard or not. Look for one that has had a recent rebuild by one of the specialists and you shouldn\'t have any problems.

Cheers

Thanks thetera, good to meet a fellow biker on here aswell, let alone someone with a 998, hope you enjoy yours as much as i enjoy mine. :D

Yep, I\'ve done over 20 trackdays on it since I bought it in 2002, apart from a loose clutch hub nut it hasn\'t missed a beat :D
Got forged mags, 998r ECU and cams, ohlins forks and a 54mm system - 139hp at the wheel!
I\'m getting funds together to get an RX7 soon too :burnout

Hi Dboy and welcome!!

Beautiful bike you have mate (love them). I personally think if i had the money and time i\'ve buy a shell - there are a few amazing engines for sale around (e.g. a 500bhp engine with clutch loom and gearbox on here for £5k\'ish). Then set the car up with the kit you want.

£1500-£2k for nice shell - £5k for 500bhp engine - £1500 alloys and suspension and £500 paint work. £8k and you could have you personal RX with some serious grunt!!

But whatever you choose you\'ll get all the help you need here as i\'ve found these guys 2 b very helpful!!

dboy

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the welcome, had thought of doing a full on project, but not sure i got room in the garage, we got mine and the other halfs ducatis, plus her elise at the minute, so space is as tight as a yorkshiremans wallet....

Sounds like a nice setup fella. mine is nice and simple, i got 50mm carbon termis, and an egine service and tune by Paul Clattervich, ex ducati superbike engine builder..... the man is a god. gave it to him for a service and a tune, bearing in mind mine is the 998 biposto, he gave it back with 136hp at the wheel !!!! never met anyone that knows more about every single duc ever made than that man.

Paul1982

You could aquire all the parts at the sametime and get someone else to fit them for you.

So what elise have your misses got - i had an S1 Bell&Colvill super 160 and i thought it was awesome!!! 0-60 in 4.9 and i got it over 140mph (scarey) lol - I def want another one before i get 2 old :-)

Welcome Dboy  :Thumbs-up

Sounds like you have good taste in cars  :)   There are a couple of us on here with RX7\'s and Elise\'s   :burnout

One bit of advice - test drive a good twin turbo before discounting them.  I personally would never go single - I much prefer the drivability and low down grunt of the twins.  You can get some good power from the twin turbo setup too - upto 400bhp (more if you get uprated twins)   And on the drag strip they can perform well as you dont have to hold the car at 4000+rpm\'s to get a good launch  ;)   I think unless you\'re planning to try to get to 500bhp or more you are better off with the twins  (ready for a :flamed now )  But all this is just IMHO  :)

As for the Elise - if you can stretch to it get an S2 - your missus will find it a lot easier to get in and out of an S2   :p   Although its still not something she she try to do in a short skirt - not unless she wants to do a Britany Spears  ;)  The S2 is a lot more forgiving on a standard set up, the S1 is known to be tail happy.  Although getting the Geo adjusted can improve this.

dboy

Paul, yeah your right i could do that, will keep the idea in the melting pot while the moeny pot grows to a suitable size. Also worded my previous post wrong, She hasnt got the Elise yet but she will be getting it before xmas when she finds the one she wants, which means it will def be in the garage before i get my rex.

M@r]{, didnt think you could easily get a set of twins up round the 400hp without spending serious cash. to be honest I do prefer low down grunt and severe torque, thats why i ride a v-twin and not an inline 4 on the bike front.

Well i guess i need to find some suitable MRC members somewhere near edinburgh that would take me out in there babies, a single and a twin so i could compare.

Naturally i would bring my shell card and beer vouchers with me :D

and thanks for the pointers on the s2, will check it out and see if we can budget for that too, she might have to be extra nice though !!!

M@r]{ how do you find the insurance ? i notice your about my age so prob have a few years no claims as well, i was paying about £800 fully comp on my 744 last year and i think that was a group19 i know postcodes can have a huge effect but my bike insurance has dropped £150 with the move so pretty sure the car insurance will aswell.

Cheers

well an hours not so bad, mihthave to persuade you to give me a ride to try one out sometime !!

Looks like i am resigned to big mileage when i want any mods and stuff done to the beast when i find one to buy then...

M@r]{

Insurance isnt too bad - both cost about £400 a year.  The RX7 is on a classic second car policy with agreed value.  I have around 4-5yrs NCB but a big claim in the last 3 yrs - fault claim - killed my S2000 so they paid out £15k!

I use AON for the RX7 and A-Plan for the Elise - both mod friendly which helps  :)

Welcome to MRC bud,

Take your time and find the right rx7 for you, i found it better to buy a car with everything already done so you dont spend months trying to get this part or that apart and then cart it around the country getting everything done professionally - unless you can do it yourself of course ?

Also take a few out for a test drive and see which one you prefer ie Twin or single turbo jobbie\'s :Thumbs-up

Enjoy your stay mate,

Gurj :)
