hello everyone im new here great site. Im doing up my uncles rx7 he has had it since 1983 its a 1981 for the last 18 months its been sat in a garage rotting and i do mean rotting there was no arches left at all on the car, the bottom of the driver door was rotted, water leaked into the boot and there were holes in the front fenders at the side of the front wheels (bumper/arch) and rust on the sunroof and verious other places. But i know the underneath is solid as my grandad used to waxoil the chassis every year tedious but it paid off.
Luckely the engine is fine it smoked for ages but has cleared up. the car has done 80000 miles and is on its second engine the first a rotor went and was clattering around in 1992 39000 miles the second engine has done about 41000 and is still going strong.
We have just spent nearly 1000 ponds on the body and she is back to looking like a car, just a couple of niggely problems need sorting before it goes in for an mot.
Anyway the point is i bought a 1982 rx7 in gold off ebay for the engine i will be dropping the engine, gearbox, prop, diff and half shafts and keeping those the engine needs a rebuild as oil was gushing out of the bellhousing on top of the engine once we started it but it sounded fine had all its power and rev\'d up fine no clunking so hopefully i will only have to replace the seals and the rotors and housings will be fine cross my fingers.
i just wondered if there was any interest in the gold rx7 engineless as it would be a shame to crush a decent shell she has started to go on the arches and doors but nowhere near as bad as my uncles was all the glass is fine and interior is all present and correct i dont know how the chassis is i havent had a look yet but it felt solid as i was being towed 300 miles home.
If no one on here is interested in her she will go on ebay and if she doesnt sell i will strip her further ie doors, bootglass, wiring, sunroof, bonnet and weigh the chassis :( in keeping the alloy wheels as they charge for tyres. if anyone is interested in the car or any parts of it please let me know im in bolton near manchester in the uk by the way. Thanks for your time and once again great site loads of helpful information

i am willing to break the car up and ship parts as i cant see anyone wanting the full car was just a thought id offer it. my uncles is completely standard except a janspeed exhaust system and the air pump has been removed. but the exhaust system is goosed i need a full good condition system does anyone know how much the manifold is? iv seen one mentioned with extended pipes before they join as one pipe from the block does anyone know where these are obtainable and for how much? and was also wondering is there a way to tighten the steering box? she loves going round corners but wanders a tab on the straights. iv also heard you have to remap the ecu when changing exhausts is this true with an 81 carb? do they have ecu\'s or is that just relivent to the turbo\'d versions? thanks for your time

hiya

1 - you can tighten the steering box ( no idea how though )
2 - you cant remap the ECU without going standalone

shaun put a stainless system on his - and he hasnt had it tuned ( or dont think he has )

i will drop him a PM and point him to this thread :D

No, the ECU (in the passenger footwell) doesn\'t need any attention. If you take off the Thermal Reactor and fit a stainless system you only need to reset the emissions on the carb to (idle mixture) 3 to 4.5% CO at 900 rpm. This is because the factory mix will be too rich due to need for afterburning when the reactor was fitted. A firm in the West Country called Double \'S\' make stainless systems for Series 1, though I\'ve had mine from Elford and off a scrapper in the past!

thanks for that info do i need any special equiptment to measure the mixture as i alter it?

alban1973

your car will not have an ecu as it is carb and not electronic fuel injection (efi) ..  Might be interested in some bits, but would have to look at them first.

Hi, only just seen this thread :D Im not sure if I need any bits at the minute. How long have you had the car ???

The steering can be adjusted quite easily, you just take the metal cap off the middle boss of the steering box and use a flat screw-driver to adjust the rate. If its like mine the bushes on the idler arm on the other side of the car where completely knackered. This made a massive improvement for about 10quid :D

Where abouts in bolton are you ??

shaunwil thanks ill have a look at them bushes iv had the gold mazda about 2 weeks i drove down to cornwall and towed her home was a long day i wanted her for the spare engine and box really i needed an alternator n an exhaust but the exhaust isnt very clever but i want to have a good engine built before my uncles engine dies as it has covered 41000 miles his original engine threw its rear rotor out or something was clattering at 39000 im in great lever just off leveredge lane near morris green

The carb can be set up to run as smoothly as possible, to get the car to an emissions test machine at an MOT station, thats how I would do it. Or you can get a visiting tuner in, but tell them it\'s a rotary on the phone.
There is an electronic box where all the emission controls are handled, called an emission control unit; this is under a plate in the passenger footwell. This will most likely be solid state relays and electronics without any chips, in any case I\'ve never had to investigate mine for any reason in 3 cars and 20 years.
