Good afternoon to everyone:Thumbs-up

Glad everyone appreciated my thread on the fiat Coupe forum, it was artistically \'enhanced\' to sound like fun, but you get the gist :)

Found the guy, via my mechanic, he\'d spotted my car having a service locally and popped in :)
Afterwards he popped round to his friend whom used to own a tuned FC and asked about a silver one round here,.. his friend knew me and said he\'d picked on the wrong FC :Talking1 !

I got chatting and his car he said his car was running over 280bhp, not sure what he has done to it, but it was a decat exhaust system and dump valve at least from the flames and noise it made! :Thumbs-up

I love the RX7 twin turbo, one of the most beautiful cars made so was good to have a head to head.

Was running about 320bhp at the time,.. but she\'s on 363 bhp now:Thumbsup! , of course only in the dry:Tongue1

Found out that one of the guys at work has one of these Fiat Coupe thingies - and it looks to have some mods on it as well. :yes

Also has the tell tale forum web address - be interesting to see who it is on their forum!

I do know that I haven\'t raced it on my way home that\'s for sure ! :3gears-rh

lol, small world! What colour, year and model is it? 16v, 20v, 16vT or 20vT?
We should be able to narrow it down and find ou the mods so you can \'compare\' :driving    :driving

Prof

Well it\'s a silver 20vt with a boost controller fitted - drilled front breaks, painted calipers front and rear (red) - not sure too much on the rest - owner works in reading

I think the drilled brakes and red calipers are standard fit on the Limited Edition. I\'ve asked on the forum and placed your description. What mods/ power are you running prof?

Prof

Now that would be telling !:)

Basically just exhaust, intake and ECU ROM mapped at present for the engine, but running larger wheels, drilled and grooved discs all round, hawk pads, and koni shocks.  Car corners at speeds that would leave a lot of other cars in the weeds :Laugh

From what others have said who run the same mods, I should be doing about 270BHP at the fly - which is around 220BHP at the wheels (18% losses).  It was rolling roaded at Rotorstock, but the guys printer was shagged, and the figures were a little dodgy - but the torque curve is pretty flat from 2000 RPM through to 6700 RPM - which means the car will accelerate in virtually every gear regardless of speed.  Top end gearing and wind resistance (I drive mostly with hood down - unless it\'s tipping it) limit the top speed - best so far is 143MPH - but I can get there pretty damn quick - from memory I reach 130 from 80 in about 7-8 seconds in fifth.  Fifth gear is almost exactly 25 MPH/1000 RPM - so it does a ton at 4000 RPM - rev limit is off - but not taken it over 7700 RPM. :Nono!

I will be taking it to a Surrey Rolling Road in September with the local 300ZX boys - so should get a better idea of it then.  And then it will be getting a boost controller, larger secondary injectors, bigger intercooler, water injection, Greddy Emanage Ultimate, wideband O2 and some other add ons - should be worth another 50-70BHP :King

lol, 130-80 what? KPH i hope!

Lets think about this, with this link in mind
http://www.lancerregister.com/mlr_show30130.php

This is the lancer forum\'s 30-130mph time sheet.

So if we assume your car can do 80-130mph in even 8 secs, what\'s it\'s 30-80mph time? I\'ll give it 5 seconds for arguments sake.

So, if you entered that test, your 30-130mph time would be 13 secs (5+8). In fact it would be less as you claim you do 80-130mph in 5th gear. So 12 secs sound right?
Then look down the sheet and find your evo equal.

Ah, a 570bhp at the fly evo would be 0.7 secs slower than you! Damn fast car you got there :Thumbs-up

Try the 80-130 again, but through the gears. I\'d give you 15 seconds if you\'re lucky. 5th gear will prob take 22 seconds.

If it\'s kph you\'re talking in, then ignore all of this...

^^^^Yes but everybody knows that a rotary hp is worth 2 piston hp\'s...:Giggle
FD or not FD? that is the question.

Big turbos take a long time to spool Mr. Trappy

Try taking one of these Evo\'s or Scooby\'s on a straight road and at 30mph in 4th or 5th just floor it.  This test was done on Top Gear - and their reasonably priced car was all over it.:)

It will take bloody ages to get going, then suddenly the power will come on really big and it will catch up at the top end.  Most of the drivers who own these cars know this, and they use the gears to keep the rev\'s high and the turbo spooled up.

I have a much smaller turbo which spools very fast - this is why the car appears to be so fast.

I will try the test again, and give you the figures.  Possibly I was using the longer \'English seconds\' :p

Oh - and by the way I only do MPH - kph is for our foriegn cousins

Not sure on my 30-80 time - gearing on the FC\'s is a little odd - the 3rd gear does not quite sit in the mid range between 2nd and 4th, so it runs out before the ideal change point for a 1/4 mile.   4th and 5th are fairly close, and 4th would be a better gear to be getting up to 100.

Not sure how I can easily measure the 30-80 time - I can get 0-60 and 1/4 mile timings easily enough with the Gtec meter - best 1/4 time so far was high 15\'s with 96.5 mph - which puts me just under a 300ZX twin turbo - and I have the same weight.  - That car has 0-60 of 5.2 secs - I don\'t believe I have it quite that fast - but it is under 6 seconds if I get a clean start.

As has been stated earlier - it\'s more important to be in the right gear, and in your power band - then you fair much better against the competition.

Oh and btw - I have had no problem blowing off stock scoobies or even lightly modified ones on the road - but that is probably down to the driver - I wouldn\'t stand a chance on a drag strip.:driving

Prof :cheers

Do you mean high 14s? A stock 300ZX was under 14 secs...in 1992.

Seems strange for a RWD car to go over the 1/4 mile in high 15s with near 100mph time...

As for the turbo lag and evo times....eh?

Isn\'t turbo lag the time taken for the turbo to start working when you are at the correct revs?
Flooring it at 1,500rpm when the turbo gives boost from 3,500rpm isn\'t turbo lag... in my understanding... It\'s called being Jeremy Clarkson.

Adriansturgess

the term \'Turbo lag\' may not be appropriate here but you could call it turbocharged car lag....i.e. it is a phenomonen associated with small engine + big turbo which all turbocharged cars suffer from to a greater or lesser extent.
FD or not FD? that is the question.

I think you need to take a look at the latest JTuner mag - you will see the times the 300zx guys were getting in for their 1/4\'s.

The 1/4 mile is from a standing start - you can lose a couple of seconds easy for a bad start - and if your nursing a clutch you aren\'t likely to want do dump with a lot revs on.

You will find that there is a lot of variance in the terminal speed for 1/4 mile, because a lot of cars come on strong at the end and could get an average time but good terminal speed, or they could have peeked early and not make much ground at the end of the run.

Turbo lag - is how long your turbo takes to come on boost from whatever state it\'s in currently.

If you are doing a steady 30mph in 5th, then the turbo will not be on song, and when you plant the right foot you will experience a protracted acceleration as a result.  This is why you drop a gear or two first, to bring the revs up, and as a result push more exhaust air through the turbo to spool it up - then you have boost and a lot of acceleration.

Large turbos often have a small power band - all be it very powerful - which means revs and gear changes need to be made with respect to staying in that band - otherwise the car is very unresponsive.  Big engines don\'t have this problem - they have bucket loads of torque at most of the rev range - which is why a big flat 12 ferrari with a good driver will pi$$ all over an evo or scooby.

Check out the following from the theory of racing:

Racing Theory - Basic Calculations

Just one last question :

What are the rules for this 30-130 challenge ?  Does it assume starting from a steady 30mph, or is the car already accelerating through 30mph ?  What gear must it be done in, or can gear changes be made during the run ?
