So I've owned my Seven for quite a few years and taken a few photos of how things have progressed - often backwards ! - but after nearly 10 years I thought it was about time to post a few pics/comments of my rotary journey. Like all "projectz", she's far from finished

but I've stuck by her and this is our journey.......

So I found a "bargin" on eBay having sold my scooby and looking for something new. First impressions were that she needed a bit of a tidy up but she wasn't dropping oil or water (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201230/b43ec9c51e3850df433c736dfbf4ac37.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201230/80beb3edb6b7be99ba2ebbffbfa7d3b2.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201230/e04efad523f736ad3531bf64803e0137.jpg)

Engine had been rebuilt by a known company in south of England and money changed hands. A week later she was mine and we drove from Surrey to Kent.
It was a fun drive but when I parked up she decided to wet herself!
At this point I should add a mental note to myself .....next time ask for a compression check!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201230/8b9ea2fc2ee3419e40dcbf1e315a5d70.jpg)
Sent from my SM-G973F using Tapatalk
One house move later and a period of being sat in my garage, I decided it was time to start small

The target was to sort out the hill-billy intake which looked like a combination of a drain pipes and a couple if K+N copies (must remember to put these on eBay

Sent from my SM-G973F using Tapatalk
At this point I should point out that my old scooby was always a bit of a compromise being my daily. Seven was to be different

. I would look to use genuine parts only ..... but who can resist an eBay bargin?!?
So I managed to bag myself a HKS intake, order replacement foams and pick up an early SQV BOV to match. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201230/4f6b67ac3835c47e066b9e3463f33889.jpg)
Sent from my SM-G973F using Tapatalk
Now the plan was to then get a few "bits and bobs" sorted......you know a few meters added to keep an eye on things, MOT, a service......and.......address the wetting herself habit".......what could possibly go wrong!!
So Seven was loaded up and sent off to Orpington for a little fettling......and she even made the pages of Banzai!
Now this is a good point to call out my friends and long term support - LC Rotary and ThePerformanceShopLtd(TPS)! Without the encouragement of Lewis, Reece, Josh and Kim this build thread would have stopped here....(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201230/5ae69a727e1ca399095f37f22c838f20.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201230/31bf37daf6a3aea952c1adab55a66eb5.jpg)

So one compression test later and the news wasn't quite as good as I had hoped!! So plans were discussed, specifications agreed and a large street port was the result - after all it would have been rude not too given the engine was coming apart anyway

Karim at Powergains did the porting work while Lewis and Josh bolted things back together using Goopy seals for safety (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201230/3ab15320300607b5bde6f0891e976b0c.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201230/b2702389c9ea68f2a8748c2c6ca155a2.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201230/1023cd335ae34c960766dd37b1a72ba5.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201230/af7886db628f71e0339471ec942d564e.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201230/4c29291a7ab5e1438d7bd37bd334ace8.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201230/bfd4b29d73afbb9c264c95d16474e8d8.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201230/63f8295c2180984bf17ca685935a4455.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201230/d176a04c1bbb22fba536b9e49de57088.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201230/066e0077fdde79a396f42e08238dfdbe.jpg)

Hi Clive. Yep was all a little disappointing in the beginning but I've ended up in a far better place. She still suffers from a few common 7 gremlins

(she's an oldie afterall) but I've no plans on throwing in the towel any time soon ...... Just hoping to get out in her a.little more in 2021

Sent from my SM-G973F using Tapatalk
So then it was a case of new clutch, new radiator and FMIC to help deal with the heat issuez

plus an Apexi ECU to replace the stock item. Ok so there was a little more involved

but things were going back in rather than out (well the air pump and air con never saw the light of day again

).
The ECU is the Pro version so has a primative launch control

..... trouble is i have no speed signal to test it but acted as a handy rev limiter during the run in period,(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201231/5bbd0fa3308bde78fdfb242e20d8724f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201231/7b7b671296cac0935e56dc84432776ed.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201231/940dcf920041b12ddf8b843cc312e461.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201231/ed0ca357b526a615376dbc0b5f0ad00b.jpg)

So all this happened pre-2016 so feels appropriate to mark the occasion with a shot of "The class of 2016" ;D
A bit of a motley crew but without whom I wouldn't be posting this build thread :notworthy:
2017 saw me eventually putting enough miles on the engine and get shot of the base map and see what she can make. As I'm still running the standard (and 20+ years old) sequential twins, I wanted a safe map which wouldn't destroy anything I hadn't yet replaced! Mapping was entrusted to the guys at Rotary Revs. The initial fettling was carried out on the road but was finished by Dee up on RR's dyno.
The end result was that they couldn't completely finish the map as she was running lean at the top end! An uprated fuel pump was plumbed in but still she wanted more :D End result was 281hp @ 5500 and upgraded secondaries added to the list of jobs :sign0098:
Still she was safe and could be driven "properly" for the first time in many years and ready for 2018!
So 2018 still had a few upgrades to sort while also finding time to enjoy driving her again. First off was a carbon bonnet ;D. Given the heat our cars generate, I figured anything I could do to increase airflow and reduce temperatures would be money well spent. As part of the original rebuild, I'd gone for a 52mm radiator but I've always liked the contrast between carbon/white and Reece (TPS) happened to have one for a price I couldn't refuse :13:
Also picked up some spare Rota Torque rims so that I could finally sort out getting my Works S1s refurbished (but more on that later). And before you could blink it was Seven's day and we came out to see everyone at Mazda HQ on what was a great day both in terms of weather and atmosphere :great:.
So Seven's day passed and it was time for getting my wheels sorted. One thing I've always known is that I prefer to drive than clean ! And having owned a set of white rollers for a little while, I knew "white" was not a colour for my wheels :)) They are just too much hard work and having run around on a set of shabby but desirable Works rims, I wanted something JDM but easy to live with........
My choice was a matte bronze which I think are set off nicely against the white bodywork and carbon bonnet but I appreciate it's all about personal choice so may not be to everyone's cup of tea but I'm happy with the look :)
2019 was all about fuel and flames ;D
First up was the fueling and went for a step-up kit from Full Function Engineering and ID1700x injectors. A neat feature is that the FPR is integrated into the end of the secondary fuel rail, only trouble is they hide it at the back of the engine bay so it's hard to see :) Have left the primaries as stock (for now) but may upgrade to ID1050x at some point in future (... ah the list goes on ;D )
Then it was time to load her back onto the truck and head back up to Leeds and Rotary Revs for another mapping session. Again Dee was in charge of tweaking the ECU and initial results weren't good - she was still leaning out despite the upgraded rail ??? A little head scratching and the fault was diagnosed to the 2-step fuel resistor not giving the pump enough power. This was duly bypassed and Dee set to work his magic once more..........
"Want flames?" came the question to which Kim (TPS) smiled and nodded........well the photos say everything ;D
The final result of this session has maxed out the fuel pump and could also do with a cooler (still) radiator (more upgrades needed!) but the twins are at their safe limit so I'm happy with 318WHP :sign0098: and without tempting fate, there are a few things I want to sort before thinking about a new turbo set-up!!
And what did 2020 have in store....... well not much thanks to Covid! A little additional airflow for the intercooler, an RE Amemiya short shift and a few cosmetic tweaks but otherwise very little else (including driving) except it's MOT and a service........ :-[
Oh in a late flurry of activity I finally fitted some new seats which had been sitting in my house for too long!
Now we all know getting aftermarket seats to fit a 7 is problematic and mine have been no different. Seats are Cobra Nogaro which are a great fit and comfortable. To make the job easier (or so I thought) I ordered some Bride side mount rails from Japan. They duly arrived only to discover the seats wouldn't fit between the included mounts! A fair few emails between Cobra and The JDM Shop (both of whom couldn't have been more helpful) and a set of Bride side mounts for export seats were ordered. And thankfully these have allowed the seats to be mounted. All good or so I thought.......
Well they are in and look great. Trouble is the rails are higher than standard and have lifted the seats too high for my liking - even on their lowest mount setting :-X On the plus side, they miss the doorcards(!) but the top of the seat brushes the headlining and overall I'd like to be sitting lower and be able to wear a helmet if I chose to do a track day :-\ So that will be something to be remedied in 2021!
As a parting comment, I'd like to thank Jon (Boosted) for giving me a kick up the backside to get the seats in the car !! My original seats are set aside for you when you're ready - See you in 2021 !! :occasion14: Happy New Year everyone!

A brake upgrade and a working cluster (or maybe a Powertune Digidash if I can source a FC-datalogit) is the plan for this year. Oh and hopefully driving her !

Working cluster..there was a guy that fixed them...replaced capacitors and such like but he seems to have disappeared...
I made 1 out of 2 but the rev gauge is still tempermental.
My car came with a mazda speed white cluster set as spare so i really need to reassembly that as its worth a mint apparently...the odometer is currently in my car...

Hiya. Akash (who was recommended on another forum) has my original cluster and is replacing all the caps and generally checking everything. Trouble is his health is far from good so things are taking a while to get sorted. I sourced another one to bridge the gap but this has also failed and I'm loathed to spending money on another 2nd hand cluster given the likelihood it will fail too, hence considering going "hi tech" as at least I know it will work

Everyone should give something a go.
There's nothing to lose, if it costs money and it doesn't work, it's just money. If it costs you time it's a lesson learned regardless of whether it works or not.
If it works it could inspire someone else.

Where has this year gone already...
Well been doing a little parts collecting and a bit of slow tinkering has been going on. Managed to source myself a HKS twin spark, FC-Datalogit, Billetworkz heavyweight shift knob, KTS Engine damper from Japan, a headlight surround in better nic than my existing one and some of those clips to stop my centre console popping off!
Headlight surround swapped, engine damper installed and managed to find somewhere to mount the twin spark that looks vaguely planned rather than an afterthought

Now all I need to do is get my hand into the smallest space known to man and split the coil pack plug and plug the harness in !!

Now if we could just have some nice weather......(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210515/ef9adeae426f9cc6712b24df66733143.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210515/f4992bad93f4632f06aaac78dffad0da.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210515/9b7a2ce912c92354f3ec83c72a4397f0.jpg)

Well no much new news. Remounted the earth for the twin spark and checked everything was ok with the harness (buzzer test). Also took cover off but not much to see inside. All looked ok and took her out tonight before the football as the roads are nice and quite

Result is that it's still messing with the idle and causing a mis-fire under boost. Tried with the unit unplugged to isolate/test just the harness, mis-fire is reduced (a little hestitent) and idle is still messed up. So gonna try a new harness and see if that solves the issue.........

To get my Race licence back I was put into an RCZ (Diesel) around Brands, got to say I was impressed that it was a well ballenced car.
Like you say though its huge compared to the 7 ;)
To get mine i went around combe in a fiesta ST and only allowed to use 4th n 5th...suffice to say it was awful... Instuctor said use the power to let it run wide...which it didnt do so i steered it over to the line he wanted and he threatened to fail me.

Just a tip, I roll my car onto pieces of carpet and touch wood all the time I've had it (17 years) the car has stayed rot free. Not sure if it helps but, it hasn't done it any harm ;D
What others you got ?

Well itoday was the day for Seven to break out of hibernation! Always a little nerve racking after a few months tucked away to avoid the really bad weather but she started on the button - phew!

Water and oil levels were where I left them

with only the tire pressures needing a little top up.
Left her running to let everything circulate and get up to temperatures - much to the annoyance of my neighbour

....... and one of my dogs who was growling in doors

Few little jobs to do - I had sourced a break pedal switch stopper to be a little softer than the bolt which had been doing the job over the winter, refitted the fire extinguisher which was cable tide to the rear strut brace but wanted it in the footwear away from my head

and sorted a few missing trim fasteners in the quest to stop the squeaking

- and she's ready for another year. Hopefully I'll be able to find time to drive her a little more this year!
Next stop will be overhauling the brakes. I have been collecting parts over the winter and now just need to sort out getting them on the car rather than sitting in the house ! Any further progress with the FD cluster repairs Malcom?
Sent from my SM-G973F using Tapatalk
I have been doing some more work on the FD dash this week actually. More getting to understand the circuitry that drives the speedo. I have obtained some chips to replace the obsolete speedo driver chips that Mazda used and have designed an "add on" circuit that will successfully drives the speedo to 140mph. I need this to repair the test dash speedo I have, as it has failed, unless I blow on it with a heat gun! The new chips should drive the speedo through the full range, so trying to work out why limited to 140mph. Good though, as everything is helping me to understand how the dash operates.

Not posted for a while so thought it was time for a quick update.....
As some may have noticed (or read if you've followed my thread from the beginning), I've replaced my standard seats with a fantastic pair of Cobra Nogaro circuits. I have always been really happy with the seats but true to form (and as demonstrated by the countless forum threads), getting them to fit in the 7 has (and continues to be) difficult/tricky/irritating/frustrating/f***ing annoying (or all 5 depending on my mood!

). Don't get me wrong, the seats themselves are a great, comfortable and quite similar to the fabled Recaros (without the 4-digit price tags

) but finding a set of adjustable rails is eluding me!

So far I have bolted them to a set of Bride FG rails but they needed different side mounts as the seat base is slightly too wide. Not a great start or fit either as the seats are waaaay too high

The top of seat touches the roof-lining even through they are meant to be "low". Not happy

with them so I decided to order a set of Nagisa Auto "super low" rails as they have had some good reviews on forums and are meant to be really low. Forgot how long things take to come from Japan

and that there is a shutdown in August! Anyway another set of custom charges

later and the rails were delivered...............
So this weekend was swap over day

or so I thought.........

Well the height from new rails is perfect! Great to be sat so low in the car and no rubbing issues anywhere.........BUT.........back to the original issue of the base of the Nogaro's being too wide and the rails won't bolt to the floor!!!!

aaaggghhhhh.
So I'm currently back to using the Bride rails with a small case of vertigo

while I think about new options to consider

#uncomfortable .... NEXT !
Sent from my SM-T825 using Tapatalk
Well I've decided to take a angle grinder to my new Nagisa Auto rails

..... wish me luck

Sent from my SM-T825 using Tapatalk
Posts are a bit out of sequence so not sure where this will pop up...... however my home butchery - I mean modification ! - of my shiny new seat rails is making good progress. I have one side mount left to cut about - opps I mean modify - and a little recoat in satin black and they'll be bolted back in the car
A test fit has definitely made the seating position much more to my liking

Not concours quality but it works for me and means I can stop accumulating (ok slight exaggeration) seat rails!
Now it's not that I'm vertically challenged but I am not tall by any means - I have no idea how any of you 6 footers manage sitting comfortably in a FD

Will post pics as it comes back together - and I've hovered as these seats are staying put for a while this time

Sent from my SM-T825 using Tapatalk
In other news, I bit the bullit and ordered a Powertune digital dash

Will be the first time in many years I won't have to use my phone or Satnav to keep me on the right side of the law!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221201/a9bf6fdeb6d364f75bc5910ac0941120.jpg)

Hope so. Arrives next week so it's going to be my next job once the seats are back in
Well I'm pleased to announce the seat saga is finally over! Happy with my new seating position and the fact the seats don't touch or rub anywhere (which in a FD is quite an achievement I think you'll agree)!
I have always loved the Cobra Nogaro seats but not the driving position using the Bride rails.
RHDJapan supplied me a new set of Nagisa super-low seat rails but the side mounts weren't wide enough (assume Japanese seats are narrower!) and had no lateral adjustmenr as they were welded to the rails! So out with the angle grinder and a quick re-coat in satin black before bolting down some new low side mounts from Puretrack. They needed notching to miss the sliding mechanism but everything bolted up and bolted to the seats before a bit more hokey-cokey to get them in the car and bolted down - phew!
First 'in car' photo is the 'before' using the Bride rails. Not the best photo but you can see that the top of the seats 'kissed' the headlining.
The following photos show the difference the new setup has made.
Happy with the result and can now move on to the digi-dash once it arrives......(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221204/a8d70bd9c8878e6156996318e2ff2db5.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221204/294e331dc305f2c13d685609ab9b444f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221204/44d690fd686bc1d1d1050cf72cac8cf8.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221204/cc8d2078d55a9df98396e7a24f08b71c.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221204/6dd9f392b3ea66cb04dde029f831b74f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221204/69e47d29ef08a351b36bb5df4e65974b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221204/afd339c1dca5ca7f2c7f5701a93e8d7c.jpg)

Quote from: clive on December 04, 2022, 08:45:40 PMWell done as I have known a few buy seats with these ears and then find they can't shut the doors on their FD's !
They just miss the door cards ! I think they are 560mm tip-to-tip which is the max before things start to flex

Certainly been a war of attrition
So I have a question for those more technically minded among us and/or more clued up on Mazda's electrics than me!
The instructions for my newly purchased Digital Dash state that it needs a constant voltage and powered from somewhere which is switched on with the ignition and doesn't drop volts when you crank the engine. I'm hoping Mazda thought to put a suitable circuit somewhere close to the cluster which (preferably) doesn't require me to be a contortionist to get at!
Does anyone have any recommendations and/or suggestions?
Thank you muchly!
Does it state what power consumption is?. Fuse ratings.
There will be both a permanent live and a switch live on the plugs to existing dash im sure.
The volt drop cranking is difficult 1 as will defo happen...more todo with your battery health and cold cranking Amps than anything else...plus a good earth.
Ill look at drawings and see what cables you can tap into.
Sent from my SM-G977B using Tapatalk
As a side note my ol westory had a digidash that had permanent live for remembering settings for alarm limits and rev counter rpm limit etc. During slumber when battery isolator off...would loose this info, rather annoying. I wired pre isolator in the end.. but had to remember to top up battery periodically. Hopefully yours has a battery back up for settings. No doubt the permanent live is retain your settings. Worth jotting them done once happy.
Sent from my SM-G977B using Tapatalk
Hey Jon, thanks for replying. From the look at the specs it only has a switched earth. May have an internal battery or use flash memory but I guess I'll find out! Definately only has 2 wires to worry about (excl. lead from my Apexi) and will step down to 5 volts (not mention of amp rating)
Here you are switched live and a permanent live.
All fuses too. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221224/42c90f5d3780ada3c57f9741f96269c2.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221224/424940d58a3c235603878ef22f0c3671.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221224/39e0d9d24e3b85ac07498e9e4a7e6a1e.jpg)

Thanks Jon and Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Appreciate you sending these through and yep they make sense. Will 'tease out' the cluster with everything crossed (as I know the plastic dome is prone to cracking)

I know you're working so hope you get sometime to relax over the festive period.
Thanks again.
Well I thought it was time for an update. Can't believe the year has run away from me (again) and were halfway through June !
So to update - I now have a fully configurable and customisable digital dash installed and working

As is often the case, i had to remove the cluster and surrounding trim and reposition my boost gauge to the a-pillar. Now I know what someone may thinking - "why keep a boost gauge if the dash can do everything in one place?" - well I happen to like my defi gauges so will be configuring the dash for the "other stuff"

The reality is I've not had a working tacho/speedo/odomenter for years and this dash was no more expensive than some of the 2nd hand clusters up for sale. Plus it's new so should keep working !
Anyway power sources found (thanks Jon), cluster back in and low and behold the odometer starts working again! Not been for a test drive yet but if the speedo also works and the PFC registers it, I may have my launch control back

If not, I have a GPS option so either way I'm less.reliant on my phone having charge.
So all bolted into the car and ....... well nothing actually. The dash connects via a USB socket to the serial output of my Datalogit unit but wouldn't connect for love nor swearing

Many cables, adapters and messages later (at this point I just want to call out that Powertune in Oz could not have been more helpful and responsive) when finally we realised that the unit had the wrong case and the USB sockets I needed to use were enclosed!
One cover removed (and a replacement on its way from Oz FoC) and the dash connects and I'm a very happy chap! Need to take for test drive and configure a few other parameters but progress has been made!
The eagle-eyed may also have spotted by brake warning light too. Luckily that just needed a little more 5.1 as suspect the recent discs+pads+fluid change just needed a little.top up.
What's next? Well it's MOT time ..... wish me luck

Well managed to get out for a quick pre-MOT shakedown run in the sun.
First time out in her with the new dash and low and behold all my (old) cluster is working again! I did remove a very old "km to ml" converter and tighten all the screws - and no guarantee for how long - but does suggest the PFC will see speed now and so maybe I'll reset the launch rpm and have a little fun

Anyway first thing is MOT next week, everything else can wait....(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230625/7ec72e3aff03e087ed26ea8039195b79.jpg)

Dial centre turns red at 3500 with shift lights starting at 4000. Not finished and may change a little between updates as it feels a bit too "rainbow" but may be ill get used to it

The work your 'Rich' puts in is far cleverer than my photoshopping abilities!
