Took the plunge...... 15 years too late in my opinion.
Handles beautifully, I’ll take my hat off to Mazda.
So much more responsive and poised than the legacy.
Doesn’t have the grunt of the legacy but the power delivery is so addictive.
Just cog it down and grin. Reminds me of old two stroke bikes in my yoof. Flat then cog it down to hear the revs climb. It’s so easy to drive, so forgiving. It’s also like being reunited with an old car you owned years ago that you never forgot what it was like.
I’ll post some more pics in the daylight.
It’s not a beautiful example, but it was £1100 with 12 months ticket from Tim at rx motors.
Rebuilt 10000 miles ago so should be a few good years from her.
Plans......
Daily drive for a while.
Donor parts car at some stage for the rotus. Then new project car.
If the rotus handles as well as this with all the 8 running gear on it with around 400 - 500 kilo less, I’ll be very happy

Congratulations, with that fresh rebuild engine it sounds like you got a great car for the money, you just got to try it on track to see how good a job Mazda did on it. :13:
It would be rude not too.
Track day virgin, I'd rather put the 8 in the gravel than the Rotus project after after all the graft
54 plate, the best vintage IMHO ;)
Nice!!! Remember to rev it! :great:
Oh I do..... but the buzzer keeps screaming at me. The revs go up, the fuel goes down.
Love it haha

Our first RX-8 only had 6000 miles on it when we bought it and the filer neck looked the same. I just used to change the oil when it reappeared just to make sure there was no watery stuff floating around.
Cheers Clive,
There nothing on the dip stick ( no not me ) just around the filler cap threads
So purchased a flashy all singing and dancing OBD II scanner tool coz I got an intermittent fault on the power steering.
It Didnt turn up before I broke up. Didn’t know a family member had got a decent one, oh well I could have spent 200 quid in the pub and had nothing to show for it apart from a bucket and a sore head.
So I plugged it in this morning. Turned on the ignition. Scanned......... no fault codes ..... hmmmmmm started it up....... power steering works.
This could be “Christine II - the sequelâ€

Keep it n the car mate....sounds like a dodgy corroded connection to me....under the battery tray is a few connections and the black white power and neutral go into a big plug on the rack under there.
If when it plays up pull over and get da code.
On here is the full manuals under rx8 technical so a detail fault finding chart.
Sent from my SM-N950F using Tapatalk
Good idea, thanks Jon
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Tomorrow I may pull all the tray out and give the terminals a scrape n clean and spray
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I expect it to be pretty grim under there and the tray bolts to be rotted and may well shear...have a look and proceed with caution as could be a more lengthy job. Check under the ecu (pcm). As that is where the eps module is to..but id start at rack tbh. When you disconnect power..i believe the white is nuetral and black is power to confuse you on re attachment

I looked in the fuse box in the engine compartment earlier.
Well.......
Let’s say it doesn’t look stock
There’s a looped piece of wire with a spade terminal on each end acting a fuse.
And another longggggg red wire connected to nothing in the box and the other end may as well be connected to the NSF tyre
It’s hard to believe there’s people worse than me at wiring

But they did forsee this problem and to guard against it produced a very, very expensive stainless exhaust shroud that fit in the recess. Cannot remember for the life of me the cost of these but it was as all RX8 extras b****y exhorbitant. Ask me how I know. :smiley_confused1:
Its the overun Jamie...best way is to rev out select the next gear and coast no throttle. Youll get a lovely long flame then.

Can anyone recommend some tyres, mainly road use, but want some decent grip AND last more than 1000 miles......
Its for the 8 obviously
Thanks
Uniroyal rainsports.
Sent from my SM-N950F using Tapatalk
Tough one. I can't answer from my personal current experience, as I run Uniroyal Rainsport 3's for road and wet track, plus Federal 595SRS semi-slicks for road and dry track. The Rainsports are useless for dry trackdays as they overheat very quickly, but awesome in the wet and great on the road!
Worn 595's (start at 5.5mm: below 3mm+wet= ??? ???) are not recommended for wet track use!!
There is huge debate on the Rx-8 OC on road tyres and current favourites seem to be:
Avon ZZ5 (probably a slight favourite of the bunch, based on forum feedback)
Pirelli P Zero
Bridgestone Potenza S001
Vredestain Vorti
I've had 4 sets of Vredestein Ultra Sessantas before they were discontinued a few years ago. They were fantastic all rounders, road, dry/wet track. I've no experience of the Vortis that replaced them, but a few guys have commented very favourably on them.
Thanks guys I’ll give the uniroyals a go
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
There really good price...epic in wet and just as good as any road performance tyre imo.
Yep track theyll be destroyed but again any road tyre will be...but your new to track so they should be fine as your learning.
If you get into trackdays then id suggest another set of wheels with track compound.

What Casey and Wayne are saying is correct on dry track day they will be destroyed and youll have no grip as they overheat...but the 1 taster session at Jdm..they will do the job....if you thinking of booking a whole day then they are wrong choice and the 1s they mention would be choice as both experienced 8 trackers.

From what ive seen in the 7 and you where in with me last year...is that there are a fair few track virgins and everybody is being very curteous and this does sometimes create a train of cars as the powers are very evenly matched...view it as a taster explore the car and see how you feel..build up slowly. 15 mins tracktime on a road car is severe punishment. Tyre brakes coolant will all be maxed as well as driver...its an OC event so everbody is that little bit more reasonable. I dont think id recommend the action days public track sessions as a taster tbh ..way to many cars and just well young lads who have no idea. Im tempted to bring the eunos and ill sit in with you. Coming back to tyres, for beginner all round tyres I would recommend Falken ZE914 High Performance Road Tyres
With my Road RX-8 I used to track day, I tried quite a few different sets of road tyres over a few years and this was the one that was not the fastest tyre but was really good at letting you know what was going on under you and would not just let go on you !
(I still use these on the RX-4)
You looked at lights today Jamie...was having a rethink and i remember Stu on rx8oc having a similar problem with blowing fuse and the end of the engine loom does rear 02 sensor gearbox nuetral and reverse switch...Stu loom was burnt through on exhaust...as it was not secured....theres 2 points that use push clips into holes in gearbox....im wondering if yours is hanging down and the end of the harness is damaged and then you select reverse completes the circuit to a short....Stus car was from Tim as well!!!!

Did you sort it?
I did, Ive just got back from a blast out in it.
This is the wiring loom that connects to the O2 sensor, the reverse switch and the neutral switch.
It was in close vicinity of the cat but not touching, all the wire insulation and insulation tape has been melting together.
There were several bare wires touching one another when i cut away the congealed mess.
Thankfully i have the loom from the donor 8 Im using on the Lotus. I put an automotive spec 8 way block connector on the end of the 2 dissected looms so i can use that part back on the Lotus in the future.
Luckily the car is fitted with a sport cat thingy so I had a lot more room than what I otherwise would have had.
Huge thanks to Jon for being there, the tech support, photos and general confidence boost ! :13: :13:

Slight hijack, first post I've checked since getting back from a fantastic weekend away with the RX-8 OC guys in Wigan, where we had the Three Sisters Full circuit for our exclusive use on Saturday:
https://threesisterscircuit.co.uk/more/full-circuit-plan
It's a big go-kart track, which suited the 8 well, enabling us to really test handling to the limits, but with max speeds of 70mph or so. Much more enjoyable than I was expecting! I'll get a video up when I've sorted things out, but I've first got Clive's pics to go through from last week :)

I know you maybe thinking tarting up alloys and decent rubber on an old rusty 8 is like hanging a chandelier in a haunted house. But these wheels will still fit the rotus even tho I’ll be running predominantly 17â€steels. So I’ll steal these for the wet tyres doing track days

Welp, I no longer have a EPS warning light :13:
3 dodgy looking wires going to the Torque sensor, some soldering in the past with bad heat shrink and exposed wires.
Continuity from those wires to the PS ECU.
Swapped out the PS ECU from my donor 8 for the rotus.
Checked the battery post, I could tighten it right up and it would lift off. Put a slit in a 15mm olive put that around the post and clamped the wire back on. Happy days.
It could have been any 3 that was the culprit, ill never know.
I can go back to having weedy arms now.
Big thanks to the "Wiltshire RAC" for his wisdom.

I have the capabilties, I just dont like fiddling with stuff I dont understand.
I'm sure different car makes are different, however.....

is there a particular sequence for flushing the old stuff out or just keep pumping through the new stuff to the caliper furthest away ??

Hows the power steering been?
Sent from my SM-N950F using Tapatalk
Spot on ! Not a glitch
I do however have another warning light,
It’s the self levelling headlights
Tim had me plug in the relay thingy behind the glove box. Probably so it passed the mot.
God knows what the issue there is
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
There's 2 leveling sensors front and rear on the suspension.
Have you done any work on the suspension recently?
Hes had the wheels off...they look like weedy anti roll bar links...
Sent from my SM-N950F using Tapatalk
Yup I know the ones from when I tore down the original donor 8
Pain to remove, all bolts rusted up
So are the sensors the likely culprit ?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If there both still attached i suspect summit todo with working on the car...maybe cycle battery power....check there plugged in and attached...
Sent from my SM-N950F using Tapatalk
Tbh the warning light came on before the work I’ve recently done.
Pretty much since day one, but like the power steering it is intermittent
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If the sensor levelling arms are intact and attached, then have a look at the connector first Jamie:
Thanks Malcolm

Well i must applaud Wayne.........
Went for a drive yesterday, Power steering light back on grrrrrrr.......
Pulled up, come back to the car......... took ages to fire up.
After a convo with Jon, I wiggled my wires ( not a euphemism ) the -ve clamp practically fell off.
I only put an olive on the +ve side to secure that clamp the other week.
New battery soon coz its from the ark and some new terminal clamps.
Wayne, feel free to say " i told you so!"

This effin car !!!!
New battery new terminal clamps still eps warning light.
Put my diagnostic doo dah on while engine running.
Full lock to right it’s measures 9.75Nm full lock to left measures -9.75Nm (not that - Nm is possible but it denotes which direction)
Eps motor output -1A
I’m seriously contemplating swapping out the rack or ripping out the internals like Clive did to eliminate the resistance in the rack when it fails.
I effin hate electrics !!! Piece of .........
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
But is she starting better?
Get another rack Jamie.
Sent from my SM-N950F using Tapatalk
Yeah starts great,
I’ve been for a 30 min drive come turned it off and fired it back up, no issues and eps light went off.
Maybe the drive “fully†charged the battery or summat.
Dunno, I’ll go to work in it tomoz n see what happens. I have a spare rack that was gonna strip apart Clive style for the rotus as well as the one that’s on the rotus
The readings off the diagnostic doo dah make me think it’s the rack but I dunno. I even looked that the terminals that the 60amp fuse plug into and wondered if they were loose, worn, dirty etc
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Best test of hot start is shut off hot wait 10 mins then start...
Compression gets blamed but battery ignition starter are usually culprits.
Sent from my SM-N950F using Tapatalk
This may not be the best timing,
But does anybody know any really useful swear words that could help me get the rack mounting bolts out ?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

If the spare works I’ll strip this one apart Clive style n have a play making a non powered power steering rack
Shoot I got that already lol
I mean take the innards out.
Wonder how much nicer it is without all the magnets n windings fighting against you.
Doubt I’m gonna need power steering in the rotus

My first drive up shelsley Walsh today.
Time 44.50 secs
Jon (father in law) in his gt86 last year 57 secs. ROTARY POWER !
Course record 22.58 in a proper hill climb racer.
Now I know the braking zones I can push harder.
Try and get under 40 before the day is out
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Not checked the footage yet but my 3rd run with no father in law is low 42.

It's so strange ( and obvious) how the hill saps all the speed off compared to hooning about on the road.

My second run of the day, not my quickest, was carrying the cameraman on this run.
Electric Fans going mad from ticking over in the paddock for like 10mins, it didnt wanna rev to the buzzer in 1st gear off the line, felt choked.
Cleared itself up the hill.
With a couple more runs, and gaining confidence, Im sure the first 2 left kinks can be taken flat out without lifting, camber is a bit unsettling on the second.
Anyway, happy with the day, obvs would liked to have reached the limit of the RX8 but there was plenty more. And since found out that 2 lardy men in a non stripped out RX8 is only 2 secs slower than a Triumph Daytona that was running up before me.

So yesterday was interesting..... my intro into driving without losing my licence or killing anyone.
Went round Curborough sprint course about 8 years ago on motorbikes and thought that was tight then. Cars is worse.
The conditions would have been great with the Uniroyals, but a lot of the regulars said the track was very slippery. They were not wrong.
Spent most of the morning getting frustrated with the DSC cutting in at stupidly slow speeds so turned it off after lunch and learned the "art of spinning."
I feel I've grown out of Curborough already, as I stayed in 2nd gear most of the time, I need to stretch the 8's legs.
Some of the in car footage from the father in law is somewhat unorthodox, close ups of the wiper blades and me steering......hmmmm
One of the neater runs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSBqtuq6oGU
Completely pointless start, and no DSC round this time.

I was mucking about on the launch on that one to be honest , it was the last run of the day and the first one with the father in law in with the dsc off. He didn't trust me after my first 180 lol
The camber on the bends were horrible which didn't help
I think it would be easier on a "normal" track than a tight n twisty sprint circuit, it needs to be carrying more corner speed so less need to point n squirt from second gear all while.
Good fun tho

Job
Done
I'll have a look in my file in garage
Pretty sure I found drawings on USA 8 site when I was souring out throttle body delete for my turbo
They were coloured red and blue showing flow
Must have been easy to find if I found it

Yep, Jamie, sadly that issue with the rad is incredibly common :(
Coolant flow drawings on this forum.. full technical manuals under rx8 technical.

What's happened now Jamie?
My homemade spare rad is a POS nothing fits.
Thankfully I acquired it and it's not my workmanship, I'm embarrassed to throw it in the skip it's that bad.
Bought a new one off Clive, couldn't bring myself to fit the koyo rad off the rotus, it would have doubled the value of the 8.
The air con has never worked since I've had it, all the bolts holding the rad on snapped off, rusted and made of cheese, typical ford quality.
So I've ripped out the whole air con crap. No point driving the pump on a system that don't work, saved A few kilos.

Sliced 2 fingers on the edge of a panel.
Wait for my new rad and fit it up.
Crap day!! Give me an air cooled motorbike anyday the way I'm feeling right now

Ok so finally. 2 weeks after clive sending a new rad, and thanks to dark nights, snow, ice, and generally working on the rotus, I've blasted home and got all the car back together.
Can anyone recommend a particular anti freeze to use??? I got this OAT stuff but dunno if it's compatible?????

FL22 is the prescribed dose boss
I use Mercedes bus stuff lol
But mine does disappear a bit so could have a lower boiling Point

As above FL22 has the correct corrosion inhibitors in it, also used in a certain race car and some old rotary.
FL-22 is preferred, but Aston used the Comma "Super Longlife Red" anti-freeze in my engine when he did my rebiild. May be quicker and cheaper to get hold of, but needs changing more frequently (FL-22 is good for 10 years)
Thanks gents

:great:
Now my acceleration pump is fixed, once I get the carb back, I might finally go beyond 6K: that realm of wonder where rotary life begins.
