Oil pumps

Morning from drizzly Devon. 3 days ago I was in sunny Dubai ....   Christ .......

As some are aware I'm collecting parts for a new engine.  I'm in need of an oil pump. ( not the omp the one behind the front cover with chain)

I'm using 12a irons to which the oil pump will bolt to, so my question is threefold....
Are all the oil pumps interchangeable from fb to rx8?
If so which is the preferred variant?
Can anyone recommend where to purchase ?

Well from what I've found out so far is all 78 to 85 are interchangeable.

The latter ones are 17mm and a great upgrade for the 12a.

Mazda used to sell competition ones with hardened lobes but they're obsolete now.

The easiest option is buy an 85 one, remove the internals and get them hardened by a local company and reassemble.

The hardening is only really necessary for 10k rpm and above.

I'm aiming for around that with my PP unit so may be peace of mind.

Or go the whole hog and dry sump it.

Fairly certain you cant use an RX8 Pump as the front plate is completely different, but I believe all 12A/ FC/FD 13b Pumps mount the same.

BTW If you was thinking of lapped plates, personally I don't like this as it removes much of what Mazda impregnates into the platesand can lead to rapid side seal wear.

Nah steering away from lapping the plates. I picked up some pretty decent 12a ones
