Thats some heavy reading to accompany the diagrams...
Exhaust gas recirculation? Thats a first on a rotary isnt it?

10.78 to 1 compression ratio! Doubt they will turbo that, however I also doubt we will see another rotary powered car unless they give the mx5 an engine option upgrade

I saw that too...hopefully not a range extender for a hybrid...
Be nice in the ND.

Yep, with mazda being the only people to develop the rotary, apart from the aftermarket which is very small comparatively, there's just not enough development to make it viable for mazda imo

Yes with modern advancements in engineering now in every single area youd think more manufacturers would revisit.
Mazda are the only manufacturer  that i know off developing compression ignition petrol engines too.

Yeh I think mazda have now been using their highest compression ration petrol engine and then the lowest compression diesel engine.

I read an article ages ago about it, ways to try increase efficiency and produce higher mpgs

They had issues with the American cars due to the low octane fuel they can use so they just changed the turbos or the boost pressure to make up for the poor fuel

I wouldnt say i was a denier but im very skeptic of the climate change debate...yes i agree climate is changing....but C02 the cause im not so sure we have to swallow it as the whole truth....there are so many other factors solar flares jet stream shift global cycles etc...but it is good for mpg and fossil fuels arent gonna last for ever but there are synthethic fuels a ice can run...

If say the air is cleaner now than it used to be than when they used to burn everything and there was smoke and smog so thick you couldn't see across the street

Yes but thats air pollution which weve been very good at cleaning our act up on...its greenhouse gas emmisions ( C02) thats blamed for climate change warming of the planet.
The effect on us is rotarys and V8s are deemed bad.
I think its had a positive effect on engine design like you said if all manufacturers where developing there rotary engines we may have a viable option to meet current regs...fingers x thats what Mazdas upto.

re japi

Those scallops look weird. Although I have seen some people modify their scallops to similar...

That 10.78 to 1 compression ratio is quite high. Basically it would suggest that no turbo, as you said allready. However, I have seen some good results with turbos on Renny rotor. Mazda might have some weird stuff figured out, as all new Skyactive engines has quite weird stuff on them too :D
Power is nothing without control. Weight is enemy of performance, handling and braking.

Seem to remember watching a you tube video where there was much discussion about next generation rotaries being used as generators in hybrid cars. Ideal really - none of that annoying stop-go nonsense in traffic - just flick a switch and let it rev to charge batteries on the move without having to worry about finding a charging station and spending two hours in a motorway service area where the fuel cost saving is neutralised by paying £5 for a cup of something called coffee. :D

It's small, light and has a healthy power output, already gets used in applications like drones and is far less complicated than a piston engine. Is it not also far more flexible about what it burns than a highly developed conventional ic engine? I thought the RX-8 Hydrogen powered fleet Mazda experimented with were entirely standard in all respects apart from the fuel tank?

Improving the CO2 score is obviously the key and for that I wonder if the solution is new and better materials coupled with intelligent control systems. As everybody says, the rotary is barely developed at all by comparison to reciprocating engines. Bad as they may be, there are plenty of V8's bumbling around in urban 20mph limits in the US with half the engine turned off to reduce CO2 emissions unless the driver asks for more urge and a new BMW M5 can drag itself passed 40mpg if you are gentle with the loud pedal - presumably by virtue of being clever about how it burns fuel.  I'm not sure the rotary has quite had its day yet. :)

On the other hand - I'm completely wrong and the future looks depressingly like the attached [if it is there!]. :D  The picture - half a dozen rotten Cosmo 110s - was presumably taken before it jumped into the healthy six figure, collector's must have list - worth saving at almost any cost.  We should probably take heart that an all-electric MGB is now available - for those who find the starting price of £107,000 a snip. ???

Great post Andrew,
Never knew what happened to the the Hydrogen powered fleet up in somewhere like Sweden, I think it was somthing like 10 cars the goverment were going to test, back in maybe 2004.

As for the Rotary donkey motor to top up batterys, for the last 3 years I have on occations said to Mazda HQ people that I felt this was the only way the Rotary would be back only to be met with none commital stonewalled looks each time.
All the best Clive
