i have a 2006 rx8 pz that is being a pain at the moment...
story so far...last week i had the flashing eml twice which cleared.then i got home 1 night and it would not turn over, like a loose battery terminal but not.i pushed it in the garage and then it started ok.
next day i changed the starter just in case.
when i reconnected the battery i did the 20 stomp reset and ran it for 20 minutes then when i tried to restart it i got the 0336 e shaft sensor code and it would not start.
i got a sensor from big pete but had no joy, still no start, ive checked the disc and the wiring back to the ecu but all good.
today i tried it again and no joy...then i gave the key 1 last turn and it started...so i ran it for 20 mins and switched off....but it wont restart,0336 code back
any thoughts?

That is a strange 1...on your scan tool youll have a live data screen and this should show rpm...
If you remove fuel pump fuse you can crank away and see if the pcm is seeing the inputs from the ess (crank sensor).
If its intermitent its suggest a bad connection youve continuity tested..but id be tempted to pull on the wire abit and see if rpm signal disappears...
Any recent wofks on car...? Trigger wheel straight and true...?

i will try that tomorrow, the disc seems to be true.
recent works...engine change...but its run fine for weeks...the only thing thats happened latley is i had the non start issue and i changed the starter.its only happened since then but ive checked all the wiring and cant find anything wrong.

Was this engine build or swap?
The engine loom sits on a metal frame bolted down to top of engine covered then by uim etc..this is where it is earthed.. and this is where the ess wiring passes through on way to pcm..

Sorry to hear you have issues,

I have come across this before and I prey for you it is not this particular issue.

Does the engine start OK, with no rumbling noises on tick over plus make sure you do not have any sort of oil leak coming from the bell housing, or from the front oil seal  ?

Sadly I have seen this code when stationary gear bearings have failed which has meant the wheel is reading the sensor in a different position and throws the code you see.
All the best Clive

ok,ive checked the rpm input and its ok...ive pulled and poked the wiring with no change.....ive removed the sensor and cleaned and refitted it...wiring all checks out ok....no oil leaks...
the engine was fitted a couple of months back now using the harness from my original engine...all earthed and clipped correctly...the rear stationary bearing was removed and checked before fitting and was near perfect(new engine 12k since rebuild).
so after this i deflooded it and it started,i cleared the fault code and stopped it and it restarted with no fault code...so next was an 8 mile drive to the beep and beyond running smooth and no issues. :occasion14:
put it in the garage and needed to move it a bit and it wont start and 0336 is back?...is it temp related? it started cold when the issue first happened, ran after a reset and this fault came on...it started cold today but after a thrashing its a non runner again. :dontknow:

Now its non starting pull that fuel fuse and see rpm input on scan tool...if it is then rules ess and wiring out..and play end to end on e shaft...
Strange fault this 1...

ok,just been up the garage and it started first turn of the key?...took it for another blast, back in the garage...not starting and 0336 code back...pulled the fuse and its a steady rpm figure.
so it seems the 0336 is fooling me? messing with my head a bit.
it does not smell badly of fuel when it wont start and there are no other codes and my system tester comes up no faults.

Im at a loss really other than immobilser issue???..same key everytime?

yes,i only use 1 key.

Have you got a spare spark plug?..
When its playing up pull a lead off and connect to spare plug...can be any spark plug..
Again pull fuel fuse.
Crank...and touching spark to earth see if sparking...if its not sparking then possibly immobilser.

why??? thats the question i have now...
today i put another sensor on...no joy...rechecked all the wiring...no joy,not starting at all today. i thought i was going to have to change the ecu.
then i had a think back to the begining...when did all this kick off???...when i changed the starter motor...so i refitted the origional starter and it fired up first turn of the key with no fault code and ive run it and stopped it and restarted it many times and its behaving itself at the moment...lets hope it still behaves tomorrow.
but the question still remains for me,why would a starter cause the ess fault code and non start...its cranking ok!!! :dontknow:

What starter is new 1? Power in kw? Was it cranking so fast causing a voltage drop elsewhere?...i dont know weird...
