New rx7 fd owner

Hi all,

I'm James and after months of searching I've finally purchased my first rotary. I purchased the car from a member on here (Arnie) so I'm sure a few of you will have seen the for sale ad. It's a 1992 black RZ. Unfortunately it is due a rebuild so is staying in the garage until I get time to sort out the rebuild.

I travelled a long way to pick the car up and brought it home on a trailer so I've only got a few photos as I haven't had time to do anything with the car yet.

Once I get time to sort the car I'll get a thread going to keep everyone updated with the progress but hopefully I'll be out enjoying her by the summer.

Welcome James, very nice car, do intend to rebuild engine yourself or use 1 of the specialists?

Thank you. I'm looking into both options at the moment. I'm pretty confident with piston engines having most recently rebuilt a v6 for my Nissan 350z. But I don't have any experience with a rotary so I'm a bit hesitant to rebuild it myself. I'm doing some research currently to see if I'd be confident enough to give it a go. I'm sure I'd be ok once I got going just need to learn a bit more first before I make a decision.

If you can build a piston engine im sure youll be fine. I have not built 1 yet im sure im capable just lacking the confidence and the lack of warranty lol! Best bet is too speak to Clive on here...he runs Mazda Rotary Parts so sells genuine mazda kits, then theres the aitkins kits etc, think id stick oem worth like you say doing your research.
Whats the plan with the car ? Road, track single turbo etc... looks a very nice stock bodied car.

Oh and full workshop manuals are on here so worth printing off and putting in lever arch file .
Cars are generally nice to work on all bolts etc zinc plated from the factory so everthing comes undone fine ...not like the cost saving they done on the rx8s..underneath my 7 far better than all the 8s ive had.

I probably would be fine but as you've said it's not having the confidence that puts me off plus having a specialist do it and giving a warranty would be nice for peace of mind.
That's helpful, I need to look into what kits are available so I will speak to Clive when I start researching.
At the moments main plan is the rebuild. It's horrible having the car and not being able to drive it yet. Mostly looking to have a nice road car from it. Not planning to go hunting big power figures with a big single turbo. Just after a nice looking, capable road car for a good weekend blast over the moors. It's is fairly stock currently so I don't want to take it too far away from that yet. Although I do fancy putting a few 99 spec parts on just to update the exterior a little.

Cool. I agree im still on twins i like them low down power actually detuned mine lol as on road with the twins at 16psi scared the shÂ£t out of me lol. We all get power obsessed i will go single when the times right as mines a trackcar but will continue to enjoy as it it.

Good to see another south west member, I'd look at rotary motion as they aren't to far from you, and the warranty seems decent. If my FC needs a rebuild that's who I'll use.

I have had a look on their website today so I will speak to them soon. I think their the closest specialist too me and I've read good things about their work.

Glad you're not getting rid of the twins, I feel it takes away the essence of the engine! Also, IMO the 99 spec exterior isn't as nice, but then I may be a bit biased!!!

I agree on that about the twins, definitely keeping it twin. As for exterior I definitely prefer the 99 spec spoiler. I don't want to change too much though. I will have to see how it goes after the rebuild. Hopefully I'll be too busy driving it to be changing too much though

I'm Okehampton, Devon. Basically miles away from anywhere. I don't know many of the specialists yet so rotary motion are the closest I'm aware of, out of the few that I've heard of so far.

I live near Bovey Tracey, I do not (or ever had) a FD but I have a FB & a FC TII. The nearest Rotary Garage is in Exeter I believe, Devon Rotary. I have not had any experience of them as I always recomend Tim @ RX Motors Salisbury.

The roads around there are pretty nice, I often drive down that way when I out having a blast in the car. I wasn't aware of a rotary garage in exeter so I'll look into that as it would be fairly close to me.
