Hi All,
I thought I would share what might be valuable info for someone.
I think it is important what oil is put in a rx7, the fact that the oil is 10w30 mineral doe snot mean it is good for an rx7. Reason being I bought some months ago 10w 30 mineral oil from some company called part co local to where I live. Oil is called (dx three)
At first I notcied that my oil consumption was less than before which I was pleased about, after about 1,800 miles I was starting to burn a lot of oil I mean like adding half a litre every 200 miles or so. This continued until I had done 3,000 miles and went to have my oil change. I could see a slight puff of smoke intermittantly under heavy boost, but with tinted rear window could never tell what colour it was. When I taken my car to rxmotors, they took of the intercooler pipe that goes to the throttle body it had quite a lot of oil there. Possible suggestions were the turbo seals, which I did not believe it would of been as the car hardly has blue smoke at all on cold startup. I was advised that a blocked cat could cause the same thing because of too much back pressure. I had my oil changed at rxmotors anyway, and was advised to keep an eye on it. I have since done about a 1,300 miles and have had used 1 litre of oil. Most of those miles have been on the motorway so as you can expect atleast 900 of those miles has been some good old fashion thrashing. I have no more oil in intercooler or the pipes, I hardly use any again, I have no light smoke intermittantly under heavy boost. I advised rx motors who were suprised, but the only conclusion I have is the oil I was previously using is good when new, but when it has been used a while the properties that make it good when new are no longer as effective. So I guess the oil is a lot thinner than one would expect after a couple of thousand miles, and literally of no more use. I was told that oil in the intercooler is kind of a common thing with 3rd gens, so if anyone has this problem and find your using a lot of oil, maybe try changing it. I am now using 10w 40 castrol, I think rxmotors put in 10w 40 avco or something like that when they did the oil change. Hope this might help someone.
