Hello all. Looking at buying an Rx8.
Infact I'm looking at one or three at the weekend.
One is only 38k miles. The dealer says the water fluid warning light pops on and this common. Not heard of this. Also the bonnet is a bit bowed. Apart from a crash. Any reason this would happen?

Hi mate.
Warning probably the most common failure...nothing to worry about...all of mine had failed. If you get keep an eye on levels for a week or 2 and then disconnect sensor...or buy a new expansion bottle.
Bonnet bowed not good....hpi it ! For piece of mind...or its been dropped on something tools etc in engine bay...

First of all  :welcome:

Yes the water light is a common fault on the RX-8 and can only be cured by a new tank at around £150, this is why the dealer has not changed it  :-X

Although the bonnet thing is a bit worrying, perhaps if you still want the car you can maybe knock him down for the price of the tank.
All the best Clive

Thanks for the feedback :)
Knocked him down £390 on the phone.
Going to start Road testing from tomorrow  O0

When your looking at them mate look in the reciepts for coils replacements and ask the seller if theyve bern changed and what with.
Do a hot start check...turn car off   hot and leave for 10 to 15 mins. Return to car and should start clean in 2 to 3 secs if any longer looking at low compression.

Thanks again.

I'm actually sick of dealers now. Nobody seems to know a thing about them. I was told "It should have a full history" on one he dug out the receipts and he hasn't got proof passed 20k. that's 19k with no proof off a service. but its ok because they "Know the car"

Not one person has called me back with compression test or coil pack change details.

used car dealers seem to not want to work for there money (Ok its a cheap car in there world but meh!)

rant over lol

Whats your budget mate? Go private? You can spot an wellcared 8 by the seller. Also Hayward Rotary and LC rotary usually have a selection with bomb proof warranties and all serviced ready for the off. I think Carl has 2 231 circa 3500 with fresh rebuilt engines!

I'm going to see him Monday as he's quite close to me.

Cool, you could buy a cheapo 1 for £1500 to £2000 on 50 to 60K and always have that feeling a rebuild is around the corner.
but with a new engine 3 year 30k warranty and the Reputation Hayward rotary has you cant go wrong...
Carl with give you the option of Bridgeporting it....if you can afford the extra cash for the porting work go for it first hand experience it is very good gives that extra shove higher up the rev band when pushing on.  :P

Interesting! It sounds like getting an 8 over a 7 is a better deal.

Question.. do you know if the ported 8s have trouble passing emissions in the mot? That's one of the reasons I wanted to get an fc instead of an 8, the fact that it doesnt have to pass emissions.

Defo at the moment 8s are ridiculously cheap when you consider what you get for your money.
Alot of people have a decat to use on road and mot time swap in the cat. Ported or not a decat rx8 will not pass a uk mot test. That said a decent quality cat and car in good health the cat should last a good few years.
The 8 has good idle good drivability and all the mod cons the difficult bit is finding a good 1 that has been well looked after. And road tax after 2006 is £450 its very hard to swallow. Had a few pre 06 rx8s and been very happy. We also had a 2010 rx8 r3...that was awesome and prices of these are tumbling.
You really need to work out what you want it for and whether you or your misses is driving it. Rx8 is the best of the bunch for daily driving. Costs wise a rebuilt and warrantied 231 rx8 from a specialist will cost you from 3 to 4k depending on specs and porting. A 60k car with good history could be anything up from £1k .
