Started on the fronts which i thought would be a easy peasy...but alas no massive corrosion. bell to disc bolts all ceased, currently soaking but maybe needed bells aswell. disc just crumbled undoing bolt. luckily calipers all sweet pistons all free.

bolts are having a soak in pentrating oil...but bells look awful.
arb's done.

Need some elbow grease on them if your re using them

I got new bolts with the discs. existing are solid. Just have to see if they come out without damaging the bells. The anodising gone...but thats what satin black spray paint for.

Is there any advantage to having two piece discs?

Heat i suppose to isolate from hub? Lightweight bells are alloy?  Manufacture...less steel and machining. ? Off the top of my head....you only torque to 10 to 15 nm so float as well. Maybe.

How much lighter would they be? Helps with unsprung weight?

Weight and Heat Dissipation,

The separate alloy bell does not retain the heat the way the all in one cast iron bell does, allowing the Disc ring to dissipate heat faster.

RX-8 Disc Weight Comparison
One-piece   12.3 lbs.
Two-piece   9.8 lbs.
Weight Savings: 2.5 lbs.

Cailpers weigh nothing....discs are heavy....suspects bells will lightweight. Gonna see what price new are save fookin about.

Something Iv never looked into... What advatantage is there too having less weight on your wheels?? Brakes an tyres etc? Do it help accelerate ?? I don't understand it fully

boosted

That makes sense Clive...first time ive had big brakes like this!
So the low torque joining the disc to the bell is for what reason?

Grant, simple answer is the lighter the un-sprung weight is, the easier damper can control the suspension making the damper more able to control the suspension weight while its waggling up and down  more effectively.

People often overlook the role of the damper, not fully understanding that its the effectiveness of the damper and that it keeps the tyre in contact with the ground.

To give you an idea how dampers can make a difference, we used to sell JRZ suspension for Porsche Super Cup cars at 5K a set, but these were reckoned to be worth 1.5 and maybe 2 seconds a lap, which is huge in a one make series!

Jon, the shape of the J will read like you have written the J on the disc, same with the C shape
