just bought my first rotary, a 1982 rx7, yesterday. its been sitting for a while so i was wondering t=what was needed to bring it back to life.

re japi

Well first, do you know when that engine has run? Did had compression problems?
Power is nothing without control. Weight is enemy of performance, handling and braking.

not sure on either of those, all i know is that it turns over with a wrench

Any idea of how long its been stood. And was it prepped in any way for storage?

not sure how long it was stored. i do know that it was not prepared though sadly. there is plenty of oil in the engine though

Id remove sparks and get some oil in the combustion chamber . Turn it over by hand and check for rust. Give it good soaking inside and turn over by hand.
Replenish fluids charge up tge battery and cross your fingers and try it.

what type of oil? also should i be wirried about rust in the fuel tank?

Any light spray oil wd40 or similiar or engine oil syringed in through the sparky holes. If its rusty in there will lubricate it all up.
Would be a good idea to drain the fuel tank and remove the sender to have a look at it. To check engine ok id fill carb float with fresh petrol. Hopefully all ok.

As for oil, make sure it says Mineral on the can and its a 10-30 or 10-40

Good sign it turns over buy hand, my RX-4 stood for 26 years and fired up ok and did around 10K before I pulled it down just to give it a refresh to make sure it stayed healthy
All the best Clive

so the typical 2-stroke oil would not work? or just not recommended

Should be fine. If its been stood without prep. Then there is potential for it to be rusty inside the housings. So introduce some oil to the inside to soften and loosen the rust and feed the seals . Basically trying to limit abrasion inside engine. For ease when i stored my rx8 engine i used a pentrating spray as i could get the straw into the spark plug hole.
But as Clive has pointed out mineral oil is best as less carbon deposits. If you can get a syringe makes less mess. If you turn it by hand slowly and fill the 3 sides of the rotor. Id prob leave over night to soak in. Then turn by hand couple of revolution before cranking....it will soak like a good when it fires up so best todo outside.

To limit smoke could crank with fuel n spark by removing fuel pump fuse and ht leads with sparks out compression will force the oil out the sparky holes....also a good oppurtunity to hear the compression chuffs.

Edit to crank without fuel n spark. Soz just got up from nights lol.
