Hi all.

Thought I would introduce myself. My name is Callum and I'm from Inverness which is right up the highlands of Scotland (furthest city in the UK) I currently have a 1995 Jap import Toyota Celica fitted with the rare and much sought after BEAMS engine. it has 200bhp vvti and 1 off only 2000 engines ever made. For an NA with no lag it goes like stink!

I'm looking at getting either a AE86 or a RX7 with a set of twins on it. I'm just looking to get some info and make an informed decision on what I go for as I've heard many a horror stories about the reliability of the engine (I'm sure many are over exaggerated). If someone can point me in the place where i might some of these answers, then that would be great.

and if i ask a question that is really basic or has been asked about 100000 times.... then I apologies!

Hi Callum and welcome.

If your looking for comparisons yes  the Toyota is a fun little car that has cult status, but you have the fact that in original form it was only a dressed up shopping car whereas the RX-7 FD was built as true high performance sports car and a different animal entirely, just sit in each car and this becomes apparent.

Like any car armed with the correct info the FD should not be any scarier than any other  high performance sports car  (most have things to look out for ) but the  link below should help you to know what to look for.

Hope this helps

I agree with Clive.

Allthough cant compare AE86 and FD. Maybe with FB and FC. But the truth is that these Mazdas were purpose built sportcars, Toyota is not as Clive said.

But little work on Hachiroku, you can make car that really can go fast.
Power is nothing without control. Weight is enemy of performance, handling and braking.

Just to add a ae86 with a lot spent on tuning will only have around 170hp so although it's a light car wouldnt really be a lot quicker than your yamaha tuned beams engine. I have passengered in a track lexus is200 with this engine and it wasn't bad at all and quite revvy. A 13b even in standard form will be a massive upgrade in straightline speed and handling for the twisties.

Actyally, you can go really far with that engine. Finns have built and tuned Toyota engines for a long time. I dont want to brag but we might be better than Japanese at getting power out of those engines. With "blacktop" engine +200hp is "easy".

And you have massive amount of suspension components to choose from

In Ae86 only bad component is rear axle. Its not good at tarmac

Yeh the 86 and FC are like night and day to compare against. Just love the sound of a rotary at full blast. No other sound like it. I've been a toyota lad since I passed my driving test I suppose and am aware of what the 4age engine are capable of amougst other toyota engine.

Is there anyone up my way that would know much about the rotary if things where to go wrong? Main problem where I live is any tuning company that knows about my car (at present) is about a 8 hour drive... Are there many people up my way with FCs?

Part wise, are parts still  available  from dealers in the UK?

Kazi

First fail. Said FC.... Meant FD. Put it down to a rookie error lol  ;D
