How to check headlight operation off the car?

Can anyone give me a quick how to on how to check the operation  of the pop-up headlights from an FD3 when they are off the car? I presume I can do this with a battery and connecting it to various wires will give me up and down and lights?
Anything that cannot be checked effectively this way?
