Hi, I was looking at this fd http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/mazda/rx-7/1992-mazda-rx7-fd3s-r1-fast-road-track-day-car/1091386

It has obviously been driven hard for 9000 miles, but must of been looked after well as the guy is a rotary mechanic. I was wondering if its risky buying, or whether it doesn\'t matter about the track use?

Cheers
Chris

As a general rule, rotaries are fine with track use as long as they\'re kept cool, well fuelled etc.  I don\'t think hard use is a problem per se.  (Mazda won the Le Mans 24hr with a rotary not that different in basic construction from the 13B in RX-7s).

The main question would be has it been modified appropriately for track use, and have those modifications been done well (poorly done mods have killed many rotaries).

In this case Steve Rivett is a pretty well-respected rotary specialist, so probably most people would reckon it\'s likely to be above-average for a modified car.  I\'d reckon that the fact that it\'s survived track use strongly suggests that it has a good robust engine setup.

I know both the car and owner well, your in very good hands with Steve. He is as honest as they get and the car is very well put together.

Cheers guys, put a deposit on it today :)

Cool, if you want to use it on track, it\'ll work out much cheaper than buying a stock car and modifying it. (I\'ve spent more than that in the last 6 months just on a stock car plus apexi, rad & FMIC - that car has far more work in it than mine).

chris_r

Yeah it does work out a lot cheaper. I\'m just gonna use it as a fast road weekend car, maybe do a track day when I have some money.

Good man, there\'s a couple of us in dunstable and surrounding area. Nice to have another local FD

chris_r

Yeah I saw a black one in Dunstable a couple of months ago, haven\'t seen any others around though

adamfitz

A lot of car / spec for the moneys. Did a comp test ever get done OOI?

Lovely piece of kit, great spec list.... and one that I\'d like myself one day :)

chris_r

He said he could get one done but when warm it started first time every time, and its not done loads of miles since the rebuild, so I wasn\'t too worried.

Ed_RX7parts

Those are famous last words!!!!!

Ive comp tested engines with "supossedly" 5000 miles since a rebuild...with crap compression.......:Nono!

hope it works out for you!!!!!!!!!!!!``

If he is offering it why not get it done?
