I considered it inevitable.

However the time has come, serves me right for leaving the car standing for 4 months. Car all nicely warmed up then on the return journey some kangarooing, a "phuht!" sound, debris out the exhaust and a loss of power. definitely limped home on one rotor.

Definitely think it was a seal that went rather than the turbo.

What\'s the rough cost of getting a rebuild done on a T2?

I could do that this year or save up for some upgrades and get that done at the same time next year.

Ah gutted mate. Rebuilds all depend on how much you want to do yourself. They vary from around 1-1.5k yourself to 3-4.5k from a specialist iirc. Maybe you could pic up a second hand engine on the cheap for now if funds are low like mine are, Or a second hand monster like the one Dec has for sale in the foresale section :)

bumpstart

grab a second hand engine of same series with known two rotors and housings and strip the lot and make best out of the sum from two engines
( an FD engine is however a suitable donor for housings and rotor pair and crank and stats for a s5 engine )

then raid atkins or goopy website for deals on apex seals and for the soft seal rebuild kits and springs .. be aware you may wish to order as one and bundle postage

take your time and order a porting template are the only other recommends

shortcuts for $$ would include re-using the rotor and stat bearings if they arent obviously styrated or out of specs
( copper exposed thru the babbit across a puzzle lock is normal and entirely OK )

reusing corner seals and side seals and chrome oil control rings is also OK..
bear in mind that S/H rebuild spec from mazda here on side seal to corner seal  is generous and this clearance in a mild turbo engine is not a disadvantage
however would recommend at least change up to new side seal springs ( or double s/h ones ) and especially new FD corner seal springs

I don\'t have all the tools, nor really the space, to do the rebuild myself.

My Aunt regularly flys to America for work so could ask her to obtain the goopy seals for me but...

I\'d like to! But it\'s better if these things are done right.

I figure whilst the engine is out it was as well get some goodies:

porting
new clutch
new coolant drain at the bottom of the engine
seperate oil resevoir for the omp

and MAYBE, if the turbo has been damaged in the process, something a bit larger

all of this will of course mean getting an ecu to suit

and if I get a new ecu, something like an Apexi, then I can remove the air pump...

Front mounted IC would be nice... but... No, it REALLY would be nice... Don\'t want to lose the bonnet intake though, I think it\'s a nice feature :)

hmm, wonder when I\'ll ever get a nice set of coilovers at this rate :bandit

The gearbox also feels tired so might try and find a replacement or get it refurbed.

Fingers crossed then :) Hopefully you can come with her
