Air Pump

Right, so i hear of lots of people removing the airpump etc. So i was interested and headed over to RX7club for a quick search and read a few threads on the subject. I gather the airpump is used for passing emissions and warming up the cat below 3800rpm? I\'m not 100% sure but i didn\'t think an \'89 RX-7 even had to pass an emisisons test in the UK? But lets not worry about that right now.  

I\'ve been looking into this as i was talking to Mitch about these 2 x 90 degree bends in the air intake system and understand these are quite restrictive, but you can\'t sort this unless you remove the airpump? Is that correct?

I\'ve also read that when running on stock/chipped managment that removal of the airpump can cause some idle and low rpm driving problems does anyone have any experience of this? Basically what i\'m asking is, is it worth removing the air pump? My plans for the near future is (engine wise) new exhaust, new induction set up, new top mount IC, Greddy compressor pipe for IC, Blitz ecu to support said mods.

Sounds like your going a similar route to what I have done. I removed mine and blanked every thing off as you should. I\'ve had no issues relating to it as such. Just make sure you get a good seal on the blanking plates or any hoses you have to block off. Some people seem to have problems after doing it. I didn\'t.

What blanking plates did you use? Where did you get them, how much? Is this mod cost effective and have you changed the air filter intake set up to a more direct one?

I got mine off some one on here. Think it was Jit when he was breaking a car. They are easy enough to make tbh. I\'d do that if I were doing it again. You can buy them although Im not sure if you have to get them from the states or if there is a UK seller.

And no I haven\'t sorted out my intake yet. Infact I\'ve still got my AFM in too its just unplugged. Need to sort it sooner rather than later. Its one of my many jobs to do over the winter I think so I\'ll be ready for next seasons track sessions :)

I did it, never looked back - it\'s one of the essential tick list items on the route to higher power - it\'s so much in the way with it\'s associated Air Control Valve on the side of the LIM.

Tell me Prof... Honestly is it a DIY job or will I need professional help?

DIY all the way. Removing stuff is easy, its getting the removed stuff to fit again thats the problem!

But in all honesty. Its pretty self explanatory really once you\'ve got the block off plates. Im sure there is a write up knocking around. You\'ll have to put the keyboard time in though cause I can\'t remember who wrote it or what its called!

As Ade says, if you\'re even remotely handy with a spanner this is a job you can do without too much hassle.
 
A handful of nuts / bolts to undo, and 4-5 vac lines to block off - that\'s all it is.

Still better off with dual belts as that yahoo belt is not adjustable ;)

Yeah I went with the dual alternator pulley and belt. It made more sense to me plus one was for sale on here when I needed to do mine.

Thanks for all the info, anyone know where to buy the blanking panels from and the dual alternator set up? I have seen the one dragon sell but thats £100, i\'m sure i\'ve seen people pick them up for much cheaper?

So whats needed then is-

  • Blanking plates for air pump removal
  • vacum blankers
  • dual alternator (underdrive) pulleys and belt
Anything else?

Some of the tuners on here should be able to sort you out with the blanking plates - failing that I have seen them on ebay from time to time - you want to get steel ones that are 2mm thick or ally ones that are similar or thicker - don\'t go for anything \'thin\' as it will not give a good seal.
 
You only need the blank off for the ACV and the split air pipe to the cat - the \'kits\' normally come with BAC valve and OMP blank off as well - these are not needed for air pump removal.
 
You will probably want to get a gasket to go behind the blanknig plate, or use some liquid gasket it will help prevent troublesome vac leaks.
 
Dual pulley - should be possible to get one for about £30 or so.
 
The belts should be available from any good motor factors - but you will want to get 2 that are matched in size.  I get mine from Clive as he matches them up.
 
For plugging the vac lines - you can just use some bolts that are a little bigger than the id of the vac line then either tie wrap them on or use a hose clamp.  If you want to do it properely then you\'d remove pretty much the whole vac rack ;)

Right then, well i\'ve seen some dual alternator pulleys on the bay @ £50 but i think this is steep still. I found a blanking plate on PR - http://www.pineappleracing.com/13bnaaircontrolvalveblock-offplate-1.aspx Would that do a good job? I can\'t seem to find any of the kits anywhere?
