I got a couple of sets of replacement clocks with my car as the odometer wasnt working on the old set. Both new sets of clocks set the coolant buzzer off.

Obviously i have checked coolant and its fine and if i plug the old clocks back in, no buzzer.

Any ideas?

Are they JDM clocks on a UK car? I know there are issues on the FC if you try and plug in JDM switched on a UK car and vice versa, perhaps its the redline buzzer thats going off?

jetpilot

No, jdm to jdm. After some serious patience, swopping individual gauges around i can only assume its the speedo itself with the ribbon wire attached.

So for example, i plug in the whole consul with working odometer/speedo and the buzzer comes on , swap only the odometer/speedo gauge back to the non working and the buzzer doesnt come on. I did notice another thread where the guy had the same problem, but no replies. Cant believe we are the only two guys this has happened too!

To add, this is running, coolant buzzer and light on and also with engine off and key in acc position.

Ok guys, have had just strained my eyes looking at the pcb sheet on the back of the instruments. There is a line running from the speedo ribbon connector to a blob marked "coolant", so i imagine there is some tie in to the speedo and coolant. My only theory is, there is a slight difference in wiring on the speedo pcb to ribbon connector between years.

If anyone else can expand, please do. :)

So this gets weirder, i found a thread on an american site on why odometers fail, its basically down to a capacitor or 2. So i thought i would take a look and replace.

To refresh, the last thing i did was install the original non working instrument cluster, with no buzzer!

Took it all apart again and I replaced the capacitor, plugged it all back in, the odometer now works, BUT so does the damn buzzer!

Could be a faulty coolant level sensor. Is the red coolant light on as well on the water gauge?

jetpilot

Why should the coolant level sensor be affected by whether the odometer works though?

bmatharu

maybe an air pocket in the coolant?

B.Martin

I\'d go with air pocket in the coolant, not the most clever idea but you could warm the car up then keep slowly turning rad cap to let out as much air as possible - obviously exercise caution with this ;)

jetpilot

So why would the air pocket only seem to materialise when the odometer works? Its def not that guys, i can literally sit in the drivers seat and swap the clocks around, working odometer, coolant buzzer, non working odometer, no coolant buzzer, literally having done nothing apart from swap out the instrument cluster and turn the ignition to on each time!

B.Martin

Is the coolant/radiator light not on with the buzzer? Mine came on yesterday, so i stuck a bit of water in the rad and it was fine.

jetpilot

I cant actually recall, but still doesnt take away from what i said above. one set of clocks, no buzzer (with non working odometer), 1 min later with working clocks, buzzer!

There is another thread with the same issue, but he never got to the bottom of it either!

B.Martin

Yeah but the buzzer is not really the issue is it? If there is a problem with the radiator and cooling system you should sort that out, the buzzer operates for a variety of reasons. Low oil, coolant, redline etc. The noise problem i can\'t explain but if it were me i would be looking at the warning lights before the buzzer, i;m sorrt i can\'t help more i\'m a bit crap with these things. Also i don\'t own an FD so don\'t have much knowledge to help. Have you had a search on FDUK and RX7club? There is tons of info on the RX-7 club.

could be a diffrance between early and lat spec cars speedo or buzzer may have been moved or the wireing as a warning when the speedo has a folt it brings up the coolant light on to make people pull over rather than just taking the buzzer out.

i would have thought it would more likly be a diffrance between early and late cars.
