Carbon Fibre Vinyl

I am thinking of wrapping my centre console, radio surround, dial surround & steering column surround with boost gauge in Di-Noc carbon fibre vinyl
 
Has anyone else done or tried this? any pictures of the end result?

I\'ve done a couple of wing mirrors on a 4x4 and although the material is quite forgiving if you have any tight compound curves it can be difficult.

yea, don\'t get the stuff off ebay and expect it to do the same job! If it works out at less than £40 per meter, then it\'s the crap quality stuff!!

i did my old skyline dash console with 3m good stuff, i also bought the adhesive which is like £20 for such a small pot.
it went on lovely and i was well happy with the finish, as soon as the hot weather came tho, it all lifted and left bubbles, peeled from the edges around the vents and generally looked cheap. i wouldnt even consider doing the dash in the rx now.

I was concerned about heat making a balls of it but the car is garaged so it wouldnt be parked in direct sunlight or extreme heat for long periods so i was hoping to avoid this

I spent ages doing my dash overthe winter and have just had the same thing happen in the hot weather. Car i garaged most of the time but doesnt take long in the sun to ruin the job. Problem is you heat the stuff up to stretch around part ect and it stays as it cools. However, when it heats back up it shrinks back to the origional size

Speaking from some wrapping experience.

We would wrap around compound curves by heating the material to 54 deg, this would allow it follow the shape.

After letting it cool to room temp we would re-heat to 86 deg

The manufacturers say at 86 deg the material forgets its memory [wanting to go back to its original form] and subsequently stays in the new shape.

We use a digital thermometer with a laser point to get the temps right.

This method applies to quality self adhesive carbon wrap, I\'ve have never used anything you need a pot of glue for.

no it is not, that is what the metholated spirits is used for, the 94 primer goes tacky when applied and acts as an extra adhesive. it supposedly stops it from peeling from the edges and lifting.

I\'ve been working with all types of vinyl for over 25 years and never heard of applying an additional adhesive to self adhesive vinyl.

I\'m not saying this doesn\'t happen but it\'s news to me.

I get all my material from these, lots of info on their site or give them a call.

that looks a good finish, how long has it been done? have you got a close up pic of around the heater controls?
