re japi

I can see that rotary engines are swapped to many different cars. So i want to make little list about gearboxes that you are using. Pros and cons and so on... Any info would be great. :)

Example: my friends rallycros car has Volvo heavyduty gearbox. We really dont know how it is going to work with rotary engine. So, he is considering Toyota Corolla GT gearbox.

Thanks. :)

just gearbox or axle too?

loads use Toyota Supra boxes, more conversions go for EGI or series 1-3 boxes. My bug uses a built beetle box and the little mazda uses a series 3 box with shortened shifter housing and MG rear axle.

re japi

Supra? Interesting... Anyone here use BMW Getrag? I know that few rallycros cars in Norway uses those.

Does TII box fit to s3?

His axle is custom built.

Renault Master? I´m dont know that model... :)

Btw, does anyone know the manufacturer of Mazda gearboxes? Cause i have a feeling that TII gearbox and Ford Sierra Cosworth is the same. (Borg Wagner T5)
Just a feeling, i could be wrong...? :)

like hewland gearbox, do tell me more,  how good are they? and aftermarket race gear set?

Good enough to survive the abuse a safari race car gives it over jumps and rough terrain, nice wide gears and a big 9" diff.
Gearsets are available from albins in Oz as they use a lot in their stadium buggies, but we\'ve got Gripper over here looking at making some gears for us too, he\'s just done us a plate diff too.

nothing like a t5,, however it is used in the US on some V6 bronchos in the mid 90\'s and is known as the toyo kogyo box

another variation is used on the later than 87 bravo series and also in later E vans
it will have a further forward shifter position and a piston bell housing,, both of which can be swapped around to give a turbo R box with very low 1st gear

here is aus toploader and a couple of the supra and celica boxes are often used in various cars ,,( as is the kombi transaxle with kennedy adapter )
usually the place to ring in aus for the special bits is known as Dellow

I have thought about this many times. Getting an old single  seater and well you know the rest. But the westy is already faster than the driver so I fear that a single seater would be suicidle

It would be yes - there\'s a couple of GT40-reps out there putting 600 horsepower through even it\'s smaller UN1 variant (from the renault 21 turbo, etc) on slicks. But you\'d want a ratio change as 1st would be far too low with the little tyres on those.
Even we never use 1st gear with 30" diameter tyres, just drop the clutch in second at the minute. (260+ horsies and 900kg with fluids and driver/co-driver onboard, so you\'d probably end up doing the same on a standard \'box with a ~400/500kg car on slicks)

However, you have to bear in mind they\'re old \'boxes now and they\'ve all had some syncro abuse by \'white van man\', not a problem if you switch to dogs though.
The other problem is I would think it\'d probably be a bit too heavy for a competitive hillclimb machine unless it was pushing silly power and needed the strength without paying out for a top end sequential unit.
