Another daft question....

How do I tell whether my Turbo II engine is series 4 or 5?.

dthebuk

I have a feeling the Intercooler should say turbo II on it. (S5)

Other than that if you take off the turbo it should be twinscroll also s5.

or just post up a pic of the bay and we\'ll have a look!

Are you running an aftermarket exhuast? If the wastegate isn\'t ported on a S4, you\'ll get ridiculous boost creep, even from a cat back

also if its from a UK car it\'ll be a s5

have a look at the ECU that will tell you if the add on stuff is S4 or S5 by the number on it. This will not tell you if the block is the same as i have seen an S4 block with S5 ancillaries/ECU.  My JDM TII was a S4 but I totally converted it to S5 UK !!!
The AFM will be square on a standard S4 and round bullet like on S5 standard and a host of other tell tale signs that you might have to dig deep, its not always whats on the cover is whats inside.

^^^ What he said ^^^

All the UK ones will be Series 5.

Tell tale signs:

Throttle body has 2 TPS sensors

Turbo to manifold holes are both the same size - they aren\'t on a series 4

Series 5 has 2 wastegate holes under the flapper, Series 4 only 1

The series 4 manifold has a \'twin scroll\' actuator and flap to redirect the gasses - they used a different shaped turbine wheel on the Series 5 to get rid of all that extra plumbing

Intercooler on the Series 4 just says \'Turbo Intercooled\' with no Roman numerals.

The LIM is slightly different - but it\'s harder to see the differences when it\'s on the engine.

The intercooler does have the roman numerals-I couldn\'t comment what car it came out of as I bought it already removed. I am going to be running a 2.5 inch (pretty much) straight through system with tail silencer and a very small mid but I am probably going to buy a HKS manifold/hybrid turbo I\'ve been offered. The turbo is a stock jobby but with bigger compressor housing.

I\'ll have a poke around my engine tomorrow and see if any of what was described is evident but fairly sure it looks like an S5 from whats been said.

Probaby an S5 then :)

This thread over on the RX7 club shows the twinscroll turbo setup and the wastegates differences on the Series 4 / Series 5.

The other difference I just remembered is the water pumps - although this can be changed, as the Series 5 has a stupid plastic thermostat housing that invariably cracks with age, so some folk retrofit the Series 4 one back on.  I got a metal neck from Mazdaspeed, after having had 2 failures of this part.

Ok cheers, here is a pretty poor picture-not sure of there is anything identifiable there...

Not gonna hijack, but some of my questions were answered here :) My AFM is like a bullet, that means I got a S5 engine (that is the 200hk, not the 182). However, my IC doesn\'t say TII, but afaik, the TII is both S4 and S5, right? I got a US car, dunno where the engine is from, so I can\'t tell if that engine\'s origin uses only Turbo or TurboII.

That\'s got the twin scroll actuator (Series 4) and the Series 4 water pump, so there\'s a chance this is the Series 4 lump.

Def S4 - its also got the mechanical OMP, not the electronic like the S5/6 engines. And the inlet manifold is slighly different to the S5 as it is smaller in volume.

It may have been rebuilt at some point and could have used S5 housings and/or rotors though.

Prof

although the S4 rotors are low compression - so that would be a plus :Thumbs-up

wastegate actuator also looks different to the s5
