Hi guys. I have a 1982 Elford with 13" wheels and 205 60 13 tyres - and I need some new tyres.
Trouble is, 205 13\'s are not a very popular size these days
I seem to have a choice between "ultra cheapo" tyres (from makers I have never heard of) or trackday tyres - that presumably don\'t work very well on wet roads....
Anybody got any recommendations?

Its becoming a problem with older cars, Vredestein are used alot on the early 911\'s and seem to be a good allrounder, also toyo do your size.

Or yokohama\'s, 2 for £94.37 inc vat & del.

Have you got experience of using any of these? I have had bad experiences in the past with cheap tyres - particularly on dark wet nights in December on country roads..... Or even a wet morning on the way to work on the M40... I would prefer to pay more for something that will hold the road and be predictable, or it might end up with another Elford going to the scrapheap in the sky.... (I have a long history of crashing things through going too fast)
I suppose I am just not comfortable out of the Pirelli / Goodyear / Michelin zone.
Yokahama trackday tyres have a good reputation, but I am similarly worried about them in the wet. Or am I just being an old woman about this and should just pick something round and black and get on with it?

Do you mean the Vredstein "Sprint Classic"? My only problem with that is the price - £128.50 plus fitting from Camskil! All of the others (eg. Toyo R610/R610a) are less than £50 and are "H" rated, which I associate with cheap and nasty (though I suppose even I don\'t do more than 130mph very often these days....). I suppose I was expecting to spend £70 to £80, not £128 or £45....

The speed rating isn\'t all about top speed....which is why I believe they are moving away from this.  It is to do with acceleration and loading on corners....and although you probably don\'t go above 130....I cant imagine you accelerate like a granny in a focus either!

Fallen are good... Running that size on the Montrose :)

Falken is what you meant Brett?

Also BF Goodritch used to do great tyres in 205/60 14" size. Getting hard to source now. Got a set on the S3 and perfectos. Was the wider 205/60 13" size used in America or was it a UK Elford mod from standard S2?

205 60 13 on the "Sonic" pepperpot wheels was an Elford feature. They did them as part of the kit and also as a separate "wheel and tyre swop" aftermarket accessory.

Do you mean Falken Ziex ZE-912\'s ? They are nice and cheap (£46 fitted, from Blackcircles.com) and have some good write ups.

I have Yokohama\'s on my fb,good in wet & dry, fairly soft compound so less mileage than others but grippy!
I had a 300bhp dax cobra on yokohama,s as well, that stuck to the road like glue in dry,but still had to be careful in wet.[Rear end would err swivel, then swing round!]
Funnily enough i used to run BF Goodrich tyres on it,but they were,nt grippy enough, the compound was too hard, but lack of wear was good.

My yokohama\'s are S306 range & R rated.
In the £70 price range you have loads of choice.

I suspect that any tyres on the back end of a 300bhp Cobra would "err swivel" a bit. Poor little things...
