Looking to own a FD in the near future, but due to age, think driving it may be postponed.

Im will be 19 with 1 years NCB, can put my friend on the insurance, (23 4 years NCB) to try and reduce it.

Just curious if any 19 year old people have attempted to insure a FD, and if so who were they with and other details if possible.

I\'m aware if i class it as a classic car and have limited mileage per year its going to reduce it, as this wont be my main car I\'m not exactly bothered.

I\'m not exactly fussed if i cant drive it till I\'m older, can always have it off road and do the modifications i want to it before i insure it.

Thanks

first off, waelcome to the club matey!!

now for the bad news...

I very much doubt any insurer would touch you im afraid - not a personal slight but due to inexperience and group 20 cars it\'ll be a nono. Although I do vaguely remember someone managing it a few years ago, but they were up at around 6-7k for insurance IIRC. I got mine at 23 with 4 years NCB and it was still over a grand.

Sticking your mate on it as a named driver is a bit of an iffy subject depending who you talk to. You will find that if the insurers find out it\'s actually YOU as the main driver and not him (if this is what your thinking of!) then you will get policy cancelled or worse, in the event of an accident you won\'t get paid.

Classic policies, although good, tend to only be available to the over 25s, but check around and you might get lucky.

At no means of being cheeky (I don\'t know you\'re driving experience) but you would probably be better off spending a wee bit of cash now on something RWD, turbo\'d and moderately powerful. That way you get experience and NCB which will both bring insurance down. Again, without being cheeky FDs are NOT something you want to jump into with little/no experience of performance cars. A list of peeps who have been injured and FDs totalled show this!!! think about a nice FC RX7 or a 2200SX or similar for ideas.

But, if you do wanna go for it, and you have the cash to spare - go for it!!!

thanks mate appreciated :)

Its sorta been one of them cars Ive always wanted, not a oooo big engine very nice i want it. Been interested in FD\'s for a few years and always wanted to own one.

Knew it was going to be ambitious trying to insure it at 19 but its always worth a go, as you said might get lucky.

Definatley not willing to pay 6-7k lol, so guess ill have to hunt about for a UK spec one, (going to be interesting) and stick it in a garage for a while till im able to insure it for a reasonable price

GhostWKD

Had my old FD at 22 which cost about £1k to insure at the time, although that was limited miles policy and a second car

I remember paying 3000 for my first car thats with a pass plus so i saved over 800, it was only a EK Vti Civic but i earned the money so i spent it. 6-7 is a bit extreme but thats no suprise im now 26 and insured my RX at 1200 FC with 3yrs NCB. Id say go for it if you get it within reason.

rx7boy

I payed £1400 3rd party when I was 19, I had 1 yr NCB,

That was with Quinn insurance but they won\'t touch me now.

I\'m 22 now with Peterbest on a limited milage of 1500 excluding track milage, and I pay £350 mods declared,

It is possible to get insurance on an FD as shown above but it was at half the price of my car so really think about it.

yeah im with quinn on my current car at the moment so maybe they would do some sort of deal, not holding my hopes up as last year they were bailed out of administration, or they still are in administration one or the other.

Looks like it is possible to get it at a resonable price just any recomendations to what things get cheaper insurance obviously without lieing to the insurance company lol

Tracker is obviously going to help which im going to get anyway :)

Welcome to the club

Good news.... there isnt any
Bad news, if they will cover you be prepaired to drop your trousers and have any innocence you might have remaining taken away as they will try charge you about £3K and up... well thats what happend to me when i tryed at your age.

I waited and got an FC EGI when 2 years experience and no claims and the insurance was £900 on 9kmiles Fully comp (this was 3 years ago)

I then got my FD 2 years ago and i pay the same for the insurance.

I even have the FC egi sat on my drive as I cant bare to sell her as I still love the sound it makes :) (street ported, decated beasty, around 100db)

AtomicRex

Personally I think if you can afford it then go for it.

But bear in mind you will need to have money to put it right...no point in having a car with a burnt out clutch, or an engine gone.  So if that doesn\'t scare you off, get one.  I had a Lotus Esprit Turbo at your age so anything is possible :)

I just rang Peter Best Insurance as that name come sup a lot on here.. However they said they will not insure a 24yr old on an FD unless it\'s 100% Stock.. Now are you guys being honest or are you saying your FD\'s are stock.. Cause lets face it, not many are!  I don\'t know who else to try now?  I\'m with Admiral at the moment but the renewal is really expensive :(
