Hello everyone and happy new year. Well as we drained the rotten fuel from my tank last month i decided to put some shell v in to my hibernating rex this morning. When it wakes up before the spring ready for its remap i wanna start using some octane boosters. Does anyone here use octane adictives?

AtomicRex

There were a lot of tests done on these additives, and pretty much all agreed.....waste of money!

Also your fuel you have put into the tank, will slowly lose its octane rating over time....so when you come to start the car it wont be 99.

Cheers for your advise. Its not entirely dorment, i take it out for sneaky runs around my block every week to stretch its legs:driving. On private roads ofcourse lol

Don\'t bother with octane boosters, just use proper high octane fuel :) although I would recomend some redex injector cleaner :) that works well just to give the injectors a nice clean out, the problem is that to clean out the secondary injectors you unfortnatly have to go onto boost :P shame :P

One of the best octane boosters is 2-stroke racing oil.

If you can get your hands on the right stuff some of it is 120RON..

Won\'t really make much differnece if the car isn\'t mapped for it though, I run 99RON in my RX7, don\'t want it to det. on boost lol anything more than that, unless supported wouldn\'t really make a diffrence I don\'t think.

It will most probably slightly help reduce the risk of det. :)

As above, octane boosters are mostly bobbins - to get any real effect you need to run some rather dangerous chemicals, like Toluene(sp?) in a reasonably strong concentration.

Injector cleaners are supposedly snake oil as well - best thing is just top use something like V-power which has additives that will gently help clean out the fuel system over time.

Absolutely correct. Changing to fuels with highter octane ratings on an motor which is already running fine (ie without detonating) will yield negligible difference.

When discussing octane ratings think:

Higher octane rating = Higher detonation threshold.

Before my Rotary exploits I spent many years building (winning) racing two-strokes. The single biggest obstacle with those engines, as with a 13b, is detonation. The single biggest cause of detonation is that nothing is consistant!

It\'s really easy to get some top notch racing fuel (Carless with Toluene additive as used in Group C cars) and raise the compression ratio right up to screw another 5% power out of the engine, but as soon as the baromatric pressure changes, you start to detonate and destroy an engine. As soon as the humitidy changes, the same happens. You open another tin of fuel up and suddenly you have detonation because it\'s .5 a RON lower..

Basically the moral of the story is, I guess, always run it on the safe side.

Rich > Weak
Oily > Dry
High octane fuel > Forecourt parafin
