So, having got the first gen on the road as a bit of a weekend noisy rat, it\'s time to start playing with the FD...

My wife has got me an engine hoist for xmas, so it\'s going to be a case of stripping down the engine ready for removal.  So far, the turbo pack is off, the UIM, LIM and bits & pieces are out.

The original idea was to refresh the engine, but this is starting to become a bit more of an attempt to have a nice, smooth, tidy GT cruiser type.  So a nice interior, a bit of cash spent on the paint, single GT35/40 turbo, V-mount or front mount, and ideally quiet and smooth.  As a nice cruiser, it will be retaining stereo, aircon, friendly suspension and bushes.

so any hints for suspension, bushes, and how to make a GT35 audibly smooth while retaining power, it\'s all more than welcome!!

Nice work in getting that all off mate. When i got my engine out i just undone all the loom and lifted it all out as a whole thing (minus gearbox) and then stripped it down. Was so easy to get everything off that way :D
Plus one of the lifting points is on the UIM :p

About time :Giggle

Wow! I don\'t think my wife even knows what an engine hoist actually is, let alone is ever likely in a million years to buy me one for xmas  [/slightly jealous]

Archbish

yup, I\'ve no doubt that lifting the whole lot out and working on it then would be easier, but then I\'ll have to wait til xmas day before getting stuck in.  I couldn\'t wait...

And she didn\'t until I told her what I wanted - but it\'s now sitting in the hallway (in the box) with a bow on it...

am FREEEEEEEEZING as a result, but tis very satisfying!!

so finally got round to getting the engine broken down, and found that the rotors, housing and plates all look to be good.  Very good.  stupidly so.
"Odd", methinks, "it wouldn\'t start for anything, yet it all looks OK".
However, I have found the bit below looks like it\'s fubar\'d:

now I haven\'t looked into what this bit is, and why this would stop an engine working.  However, everything else is shiny and good (just needs a bloody good clean.  The housings look too good, if anything!  The rear rotorseals are a bit sticky, but freed up easily enough.

Any thoughts??

((other than, well while it\'s out, lets go get a 1/2 bridge...))

Is that the bearing in the rear iron stationary gear ?

Looks like it spun.  It\'s replaceable at least - so that \'s good news ;)

Everything look good under the front cover (Torrington bearings, front bearing and so on) ?

Yup, everything else looks too good.  Til I saw that, I assumed everything was fine and I\'d broken a perfectly good engine.  Slight scoring on the shaft - reckon it needs replacing?

As the Prof says - the bearing has spun.

Any damage on the shaft?
Brap Brap Brap Brap

Archbish

yeah, slight pitting in places - does that mean it\'s dead?

Not sure how much you can get away with on the e-shaft - certainly the parts of it that spin in the bearings needs to be in good order.  I am guessing if you have that damage on the bearing - it may have started to wear on the shaft, but the bearing inserts are a lot softer.

Any sign that it \'s had oil starvation?

and such a sign would be.... ((i\'ve not done an engine of any kind before.  Like "it looks like it spun a bearing" gets a reaction of "Oh, good.  They\'re supposed to spin"....  Turns out a spun bearing is bad!))

There are oil pathways that guide the oil onto the bearing centre - that\'s the holes you see in the centre - obviously in the ideal world the shaft spins inside the fixed bearing on a film of oil.  If the oil pathway got blocked, or pickup failed for a prolonged period (low oil level, or doing the wall of death maybe ;) ), then the oil flow to the bearing may have stopped, causing the shaft to grip on the bearing and pull it around with it.  But you may see signs of discolouration elsewhere - indicating heating maybe ?
