Hi all,

New to the forum, picking up my type r on the docks on monday, can\'t wait.  The car was a steal but the paint looks quite faded so I\'ll need to get that sorted asap.  Any tips or do you think it will need doing prefessionally?

Any thoughts welcome.

Have you considered a wrap?
Cheaper than a paint job

It doesn\'t look bad enough to warrant a respray/wrap I don\'t think.  Was thinkong more along the lines of compound buffing etc.

welcome, afraid its a well known pigment problem on reds going pinky - could try just t cutting yourself but better going to a pro polisher

Thanks for the reply.  I\'m probably going to get it done professionally because I want to get it gleaming again but also try and keep it that way.  I thought a few others might have had to do this.

There is a garage in Croydon that has done a car for me in the past it had severe paint fade so much it wasn\'t even pink it was more grey. They used compound G3 and till now the car looks in top nic. We\'re talking atleast 4 years ago and I last saw the car in August.
Don\'t know if all garages are as good with G3 but if you want the details of this one in Croydon that done mine i\'ll pass it on.

Croydon is a fair old poke but id be greatful if you\'d PM the details.  Have you put any sealer or product on yours to keep it shiny red?

Hi there and welcome, yes red is a problem but if you use G3 it will bring it up like new, and will remove all the swirl marks as well. You can do it yourself with a power buffer, but if you have never used one of these before, just go careful! After doing mine I used a glaze to keep her looking good.

Any body shop/paint sprayer can do the job for you, it is not rocket science.

Good luck and with the car :wave

Thank you all for your help.  Looking forward to ownership and the rotary scene.  Went to Rotorstock this year and it was brilliant.

hey mahoney, i do part time detailing for a few local car dealerships and also a few cash jobs, im located in brierley hill in the west midlands and could probably sort that out for you, if you wanted i could try a small area and if you are happy continue all around the car, if you do take it somewhere be careful how aggressive they are on the paint as it is very thin on japanese cars around in the 90\'s and earlier as i found out when testing compounds on my rex

pm me if you are interested matey

IMHO it depends how long you want it too stay shinny. (sounds daft i know) i am a Painter and i see it all the time, its called Oxidization and it happens on any direct gloss colour its just Reds give more Pronounced effects (it directly associated with the sun so hot climates don\'t help). In my experience you will find the colour coat goes quite thin so you only get three or four buffs before it gets see through on edges etc, Buffing a car like this is aquard at best mainly because if you use the wrong Polish often it will go dull again so fast you will be able to see it (on the more extreme examples)

I have polished a few cars up but you have to keep on top of them and use the right polishes and waxes because if you use things like Traffic film remover it will quite literally send your car white.

The only sure fire way to stop it coming back is to paint the car in Base and clear (Not direct gloss) you will find these types of repaints are usually not a lot of money in the Bodyshop world as long as the panels are not covered in dents.

Not to sound Funny but often people in the know will steer clear of red cars for this reason, oddly its only in the last few years Manufactures have started using Base and clear (probably to do with the new EU regs)

my car has faded pretty bad aswell (it was also red at one point in time) how much wopuld it cost for the respray that your on about Grizzly? sorry to jump in on the thread like this.

i\'d use a g3 with plenty of water and step it down with alot of water then a finese 3m or fine polish with higher speed also with water ! most important bit is to use a old school wax after the buff and it will last good 3 years if you take good care of your paintwork !
i can do it for you if your local to me

Don\'t take this the wrong way but G3 is not as good as every one thinks, i used to use G3 every day but i found its very messy, if you use lots of water it doesn\'t cut properly / gets every where and if you use it out of the bottle it dries up very quickly when using a mop. I would recommend 3M green top for cutting and Yellow top for finishing (yellow top is kind of like Finesse) but that said our valeters have dedicated polish for restoring colour (just not sure what it is)

HEHE its Mazda Red, the WORST colour for fading lol Liam is having his whole FC resprayed as his red is kinda pink now lol its perhaps best to get it professionally mopped to get the colour back :)
