Hi,

Just wanted to know for future reference where to get Casting\'s / Irons / Side plates / Housings.
(I think that covers there various names :Talking1)
Grinded flat or Skimmed.

I know most tuners can offer this but they dont do it themselves, they send them out somewhere.

Many thanks
Paul

Hello mate. Most tuners can get irons lapped for you, and I\'ve developed a process for flatting the sealing surfaces of the housings if you\'re interested.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply and noted for future reference :Thumbs-up

I\'d hate to refer to tuners as "middle men" as they provide an excellent service just wondering has anyone sent there\'s off direct.

Would have thought it would be anyone that offers head reskimming would be able to do it. Just depends on machine capacity !

What are the costs involved in lapping and the pro\'s and con\'s of doing this?

At what stage would you know wether the Irons are worth lapping and how many miles should they last?

We used to get housings lapped from time to time but found that it is better to use very good used plates than lap.Often the Nitriding is just too thin.

Racing Beat offer a lapping service and advise:

"When rebuilding your engine it is highly recommended that you resurface the side housings if the level of wear permits. We recommend removing no more than .002-inch of material from each side of the 1986-95 housing surfaces to maintain the integrity of the O-ring grooves. With the 1971-85 housings we can remove material to the following minimum thicknesses: Front Housing 1.568-inch; Intermediate Housing 1.955-inch; Rear Housing 2.355-inch".

Q. Is it possible to guage the depth of nitride on housings to see how worn they are?
