A busted seal?

You are right on that. I was thinking that bust water seals or worn springs or tips could cause low compression but I suppose it all ends up with lost compression through an apex seal.

Is this right?

There are so many combinations, but, yes, generally you can get a sticking Apex seal, Side Seal or corner seal, because carbon can "block or Jam the springs. To free up a stuck seal you can add ATF (Auto Trans Fluid) directly through the intake (lots of smoke) or 2 stroke, the excess oil frees up the springs.

A worn Apex seal (in the middle) blows back combustion cycles causing poor compressions and performance.

Then there is coolant entry from warped housings, back in the 70\'s at my dealer we did 100\'s of R100, RX-2 and RX-3\'s with coolant entry, mainly caused by warped rotor housings from not warming up engine and age.
Generally now there are few RX-8\'s or rotaries that suffer such a short engine life from coolant entry, they were popping back then at 30,000 Miles.

All of the above in time requires a rebuild.

I\'m just going to make sure I have enough money for a rebuild for when my engine does go which hopefully won\'t be too soon and just enjoy the beep while it still lets me.

Actually 128,623 Miles, from someone quoting facts and figures.

Weird! I make it 128,340 miles:Giggle:)

I\'m not trying to be funny here but in the end of post 11 on this thread you said 30,000 miles is the forget it limit?

(sorry if there is a better way to quote but hers a link)

No problem, back in March I was given stats by the reman guy in the US at that time, based on the information collated at the time, perhaps I should update it. MNAO are collation info all the time now they are into full reman production at 380 engines a month.

Keep in mind there is no set exact mileage when an engine can fail or may fail.
Some owners keep driving and don\'t notice a power loss or change.
As far as MOP are concerned, over the past few year (particularly the US) Mazda have updated the PCM Flash to increase oil flows onto Apex seals.

WHY?

Quote from: johnf;597558You see I know nothing about what you are talking about but you seem insistant on quoting facts and yet you now make light of the FACT that you can\'t convert km\'s to miles.

As I said I know little about the topic but from an outsiders view you lose credibility over this basic error.

Are there other 4% variables in your other quoted figures?

John

John,

The owners of this RX-8 Speedo is in kilometers 207,000 KM, in this instance I did a quick "in my head" calculation into miles...OK.

In my head I usually just times kilometers by 6, what do you do without a handy calculator when it is actually 0.6213712?

At the end of the day, Engine designers will uprate and redesign week points on their engines all the time regardless of engine type, its just natural progression. I think its obvious that they think adding a third oil injector will improve the longevity of the engines or they wouldn\'t have bothered, however that doesn\'t mean that there is any definate cure for the series 1\'s wearing out apex seals. Even with pre-mixing they are going to fail eventually, so why not treat it as an inevitability and start saving for a rebuild now if your planning to keep the motor a few years? Then at least if mazda do stump up for a new engine then you have some cash spare at least. It doesnt matter if the seals fail at 125k or 175k the outcome is the same.

johnf

Looking at car speedo\'s 80kmph = 50mph I thought the basic rule was divide by 8 then x 5

Quotejust times kilometers by 6

I think you\'ve made another error - did you mean .6 not 6 ?

Ash, you seem to be making some very very bold statements yet aren\'t providing anything other than anecdotal evidence to support it.

Could you give some hard facts backed up with real sources (not the mate of a mate\'s uncle).

I saw some engine failure rate comparison data for the 8 compared to other majoir manufacturers that certainly seemed to imply there was no difference between Mazda and other cars sold in Europe (BMW, Ford, Merc, Audi).

All engines fail.  Sometimes due to design flaw where you get very very high rates of failure per unit sold.  Other failures are to be expected.  I\'ll try to find the reference to the report to back this up (otherwise it\'s just more anecdote).

Please try to post relaxed - no need for such heat over something so rare and trivial as an engine failure.

Remember 8\'s aren\'t 7\'s!!!

multiply miles by 1.6 to get kilometers!:p
