HI-
Just got a sports cat, and hi-flow down down pipe on the way.
Now for the mapping- do I really need a rolling road? I\'ve heard of most being done without, and having no issues......

And who would you recommend for mapping- I\'m south east, in Kent

gandyRX

Talk to carl at heyward rotary mate, also what ecu you got? car mapped mapped mine after i put my decat etc and it made the world of difference, you dont need a rolling road to map it, carl done live mapping and i was told its better for the car

CharlieP

Got an Apexi to go on, along with sports cat, and hi-flow downpipe.
Already got nurspec BackBox and Air filters

true you dont need a rolling road to map a car just a decent wideband, but how is road mapping better for the car???
good things with rolling roads you can see ignition problems straight away and the log of the afr line also you get a power graph printout.

I get mine rolling roaded/dyno mapped @ reworx in Portsmouth

Would you map mine? :cheers

At the moment- its pretty standard other than air filters, hard pipes and back box

Hi Charlie,

If these are the only mods you will be fine on a base map if you have an Apexi ECU fitted,

If you still have the stock ECU then you won\'t be able to remap this anyway but once again the stock ECU will handle this level of mods

Hope this helps
All the best Clive

IIRC Carl\'s maps have been developed using RRs and are fine tuned on the road.  Certainly RRs are a great tool and very useful but not foolproof.

Re:worx mapped mine on their RR and it expired at 171mph on the runway at Bruntingthorpe.  Note: this is not a criticism or Max/Geff as I was putting it through extremely hard work and intake temps were the wrong side of 50C!

I think that, ideally, you\'d use both - the RR won\'t always highlight flat-spots at low revs that can make a rex a pig to drive in traffic for example.

.

Carl didnt use a wideband until recently I heard to do road mapping and fine tuned by ear before so he must be good :D

Agreed Dynos are not foolproof but essential and safer in my eyes (3rd or 4th gear pulls on the roads) I didnt do any mapping myself over winter on the roads for anyone I declined on the grounds of dodgy road conditions.

The Best Method of tuning is to put a developed map onto a car for the mods as a "starting point" each car is different, tune on the dyno this checks for ignition, boost problems, afr line everything a dyno can log etc and then finish off with road mapping session, this is the ideal, but of course takes more time and money.

The Reworx boys did both for me dyno and road and the the map is perfect, checked my plugs after this weekends strip action and they indicate a perfectly tuned car.

i fully rate carl 100% when i had mine on the rollers they told me that it was on a basic apexi map and running lean, they said i could have it done on the rollers but youd get a better map on the road because the engine would be under the real stresses of driving plus extra stresses like drivers weight etc, the rollers would set the engine up great but youd get the best power figures only on the rollers * thats only what i was told on the rolling road day its not info from me personally*

i took mine to be live mapped by carl and it was possibly the best money i spent on the car, he put a sensor up the tail pipe and plugged the laptop in and took it out on the road, he told me to do different things like power, revs and gearchanges at different points and you could feel the car changing as he altered the settings, by the end the car felt completly different and quicker, its running lower boost and more power and fuel economey has gone up abit too, im totaly happy with what carl did to mine and would recomend it to anyone with an aftermarket ecu

thats not to say though who ever maps it might be able to do the same on the rollers i just went on the advice the rolling road ppl gave me and from experience with the road mapping

Keeping away from the \'my tuner\' vs \' your tuner\' arguments that don\'t really get anywhere...

My point was really that it\'s good to use all tools effectively and the RR is definately a useful/mandatory tool.  All cars vary BUT all maps (Carl, Pip, Geff) start out with their own base map.  Fine tuning either on the road or RR are massively important.

At the end of the day though the onlr really important thing is that our cars drive well and we\'re happy with the results.

Mark - I agree 100% about road mapping in terms of safety and legality.  I\'m happy to drop my car off with a tuner and for them to tune it - the how where and why is their call but there\'s no way I\'m going to risk my liberty and license in doing so!

The above comment by you Mark is a load of twaddle!
Since you did not personally tune your car and you are not doing this work as a professional and you are not and have never been one of my customers you are not really in a position to comment about my work, but you are well qualifed to talk about ReWorx which I think is fine and they have obviously done really good work for you and many others over the years.

We have had a wide band for many years in use on all fuel injected cars,so stop going on about what you "heard " as having never been one of my customers you don\'t know.

And even though people such as you and other may mock as to if it is possible to hear if an engine is running lean or Rich, where do you think the word tuning came from? I have known other specialists relying too much on a wideband to the extent that when an engine is misfiring they wrongly diagnose rich running, instead of igniton breakup and pop the engine!!! And yet if they had been listening to what is going on they might have been aware that is was running lean  before it was too late!

I have also heard of and seen maps from other tuners that have been only on rolling roads and they are sometimes really poor for the road with flat spots and no low down power. After a retune by me customers can\'t believe how much more responsive the engine is.In fact I often make the claim that if they don\'t feel a definite improvement over what they had before that I will put their old map back in and there will be no charge. So far no takers! Say\'s it all really.

The basis for maps we start from in most cases have been carefully tuned for many hours on various rolling roads through the years, and then subsequently fine tuned on the road.
Even race cars noticeably perform better when tuned on track rather than rollers.

Carl

OH,and in no way am I decrying any tuner in particular, everyone is free to make their own mind up as to where they go. There is some really good tuning work being done out there both on the road, track and dyno\'s.
