Quote from: Ian65;7398331st gens are one of the bargains of the classic car world at the moment..... you can pick up a mot\'d example for upwards of £500...

Very simple cars to work on and maintain as long as the engine is strong

just a bit juicey to run as a daily driver ( depending on what sort of milage you do)

Not the easiest cars to sell on ( unless you threaten to strip it for parts.... should find a buyer pretty quickly then....!)

What about the Austin range,mmm,maxi,allegro & marina!:D

Strange in US & OZ Fb\'s are still sort after & command good prices for good examples[Japan may also be the same?],but here it\'s all escorts, crapri,s & saxo\'s.

Cars such as the Maxi or Allegro is why I felt I needed to put the \'Some form or redeeming feature\' claus on my list of requirements :P ahaha

When was the last time though, that you saw a 1st gen sell for £2500?
There have been a few very nice cars advertised for that sort of money over the last 18 months and I can\'t remember any that appeared to find a buyer at that price ( or above in the case of some cars)

I\'m not saying it isn\'t worth that much, I reckon it\'s worth more but how do you put a value on them?
Do you go on what the public are prepared to pay for them....which isn\'t very much....
or what they are worth to the owners.?
Still, as they say, it only takes the right buyer at the right time.
Nice photo... that one in front of the house is almost a calendar pic!

Austin Allegro unrestored £3995.

must be a typo..... needs to move the decimal point a couple of places to the left.

I suppose at the end of the day a cars only worth what people are prepared to pay for it.
I do think £2.5k is not a bad price for an A1 condition car,it\'d cost you more than that to buy a fixer/upper if you did,nt do the work yourself.

It\'ll be interesting to see if values ever do rise, once were out of this recession, but i\'ve always had the attitude if you want the best you gotta pay for it!

Having said that i\'m a perfectionist & particulary fussy about my cars, not everyone gets upset at less than perfect bodywork & mechanicals!

I agree with all of that Stu and it could cost you more than £2,500 even if you did the work yourself... a top notch respray could cost the best part of that, without other parts, consumables and your time..... restoring cars is expensive! Thing is, someone who\'s never restored a car before doesn\'t know that...!

It\'s a mystery to me why 1st gen values are so low at the moment and even the best cars are sticking and having to have their prices seriously reduced to attract buyers.

syebba

Restoring cars to A1 is expensive & time consuming.
Complete respray inc engine bay £2.5 > £3k[dose\'nt inc stripping car]
wheels refurbed & new tyres £800[recognised quality tyres]
Welding work, depends on extent of corrossion £££?
New recon engine £1500 fitted
Rectify 25 years of neglect,brakes,suspension,electrics,exhaust,etc £££?

Looking at the above, makes £2.5k for an A1 car seem a bargain!
