hi,
i presently own a 301hp, 290lb mr2 turbo, 1992, power FC, metal HG, bolt ons etc etc...
pretty kitted out, mint engine bay (all painted to look like new), suspension and wheels, all sorted.
had it 4years, but think it maybe time for a change.....

id like to ask, what sort of mods, power does it take with a gen3 rx7 to get to mid 12s, maybe low 12s on the 1/4.....??
i actually have a td06 turbo and 800 injectors to go on the mr2, which is likely to give me 350-370hp at 1.2bar, low 12s possible. (yet to be fitted tho).

i dont want to downgrade in any sense in terms of power and acceleration, infact more the better. but what am i looking at price wise, mod wise to get me near this on a rx7??

is it essential to get a rebuild at 60k miles?? sorry if im banging on at a myth, but you hear it alot (plus quite a few rx7s for sale on PH have rebuilds)...what sort of miles do you have to do it at??

any own or used to own a mr2 turbo, and rx7 gen3 to tell me differences?? in terms of performance and handling??
the mr2 has now become a weekend car, the rx7 would be the same.
is £6-7k a sensible amount to spend on a rx7 of the same age as my mr2?? (mr2s of that age werth about 2-3k, prob could sell mine for 3.5-4k with the mods on there)

just after general advice really.....
if the rx7 isnt for me, and the mr2 would be better, then so be it.

thanks

jdm_turbo

just to add, am not interested in huge body kits, but performance mods and a nice set of wheels, mint stock body would be ace.

My bro has recently bought a stock mr2 and it\'s a lot quicker than i expected it to be. My car is quite a bit more powerful, but near standard was still quicker I believe (250atw). Now it\'s a few hundred hp more, a decent single with porting will put out around 400atw so I think that\'s what you\'ll be after. Best way is to test drive a few, maybe pop down to the kent meet and see if they\'re for you.

The Rx7 will be less of a cow to work on if it goes wrong ;)

There are a few nice single turbo FD\'s for sale around your budget - they should all be capable of producing high 12\'s/low 13\'s I would think - and they would be around 340bhp.

My advice is to take a few test drives - the power delivery of the rotary is a lot different to the MR2 four pot.

300-310bhp is acheivable with minor mods on an FD (3rd gen) much above that and you are looking at FMIC/V-Mount, uprated fueling system, single turbo, etc etc.

The FD is a light car so as standard it should run high 13s however mid 12s would require fairly extensive mods.

the 60k rule is approximate, but probably accurate (remember a rotary rebuild is cheaper than a full rebuild on a high tuned piston block - prices range from £2k - £4.5k depending on who does it and what else is done)

in the current market £7k will get you a very good stock/mildly modded FD with a recent rebuild or a reasonable single turbo FD.

GT4088 turbo   Walbro fuel pump   1000cc injectors   custom V-Mount   Blitz Boost Controller (ok so the boost controller is still to fit)

Loud? Hell yes! :D

well 270-310 normally nets 12.9-13.1 on the 1/4 with the mr2. i would be after something faster than that......(perhaps the td06 350hp, will put a smile on my face)...just looking around really.
(im currently 255atw)

kent meet, we talking bluewater meets? i used to go in the mr2 a couple of years back.

2-4.5k for a rebuild is hardly cheaper than a piston block, id expect to pay 1.5-2.5k for a rebuild on the mr2 with a fair few bits included....

think im just after a new callenge really.
i did my own HG swap on my mr2, engine in situ, was a pain, lol.

thanks for replies.

Brett

I think the only real solution is to take a test drive - come to a meet - we are at all the major shows :wave

Hmmm, shiny! Time for a game of guess the spoiler again!

There\'s a regular MRC club meet in Dartford, which is what Memski was referring to, I thinks, first Tuesday of the month or something. I know I can never make it cos I\'m always on lates at the time. If you can\'t make that, there\'s always some show or other to find a few Rexes at. Tunnel run later this month might be worth blagging a ride from someone. If you can get insurance, you can have a go on mine, but I\'m probably not very local to you (near Brighton)

EDIT to say its Inherited wisdom from mates who\'ve had Mister Twos, but the RX is allegedly a bit more planted and stable at speed, don\'t get that light front end feeling quite as bad! You get power steering, too. No more chance of getting one back if it ups and ****s off with the back end in the wet, though! :Giggle

If you\'re just interested in straight line speed it sounds like you\'d be better off sticking with the MR2.  However, if you like going round corners and driving a perfectly balanced sports car buy an RX7.  The engine will last as long as how well you look after it, the only problem is that if something silly fails it may lead to engine failure.

Buy an RX7, everyone will look at you and if you see another one you\'ll probably have met the driver already from the social side of ownership and there aren\'t that many around.

Don\'t get me wrong the RX7 can also be a straight line monster but it\'s far more than that.

Buy an RX7, if you don\'t you\'re a chicken :)

Nik was part right! there\'sa regular meet at the wharf pub in dartford, but its on the second tuesday of the month - often a couple of single\'s of varying spec go to that.

Where abouts in kent are you - chances are there\'s someone not a million miles away from you.

Si.

i used to have a mr2 rev1 with a ct20b / st205 cc / decat all the usual mods. Ive now got a rx7 with a single turbo and wouldnt look back.. the only negitive is the petrol consumption!

jdm_turbo

thanks. mpg doesnt worry me.
i am after an all round performance, straight and corners. would just like to know if there was straight line speeds required, its there....(im talking 0-100), top end speeds dont bother me in the slightest.
if i was, id be looking at supras, gtos and the like.

to be fair, you could call the mr2 a perfectly balanced car as well (in the right hands, lol)
id still like a smallish car.

im 26, 5ncb, currently paying 650ish FC, tons of mods, no idea what insurance on a rex would be like.

You need to register just like any other forum, but this has been discussed over on the american rx7 forum with many more replies.

hello mate,

I owned an MR2 turbo for 4 years and it was my baby, spent a fortune on her and modified practically everything. It was running a garrett gt28rs turbo, with all the relevant engine/fuelling/cooling modifications and it pulled a nice and safe 345bhp@1.2 bar.

It was a beast, well I thought so anyways. But I sold her and moved on. I went through lots of other cars after the MR2, integra type r, celica gt4, evo, impreza...and none really gave me the same buzz as the MR2 did. UNTIL, I decided to bite the bullet and buy my dream car, the RX-7.

Its vastly superior mate, everything...the feel, the handling, the braking, the chassis...it feels like a REAL sports car.

If you can afford it, and you want a fresh challenge...then the RX-7 IS the way to go...no doubt about it.

As for 1/4 mile times, pah...who cares? But 350bhp out of an rx-7 is much more user friendly than in an MR2..believe me!!!! lol

GO FOR THE REX!!!!
