Turbo Flow rate

I am not sure how you determine whether a turbo is suitbale for an application or not. I gather it has to do with the amount of air it can deliver and as engines go I presume rotaries are quite hungry! How many Kg/s will a turbo need to flow to give reasonable power? If you were going for a single turbo that is? I see people talking about A/R but I don\'t know what that means. Please can someone help.
