Right its been an amusing evening.

After gettign the car and turbo\'s running properyly at the weekend and doing the simplifyed turbo setup too I thought all was well, so tongiht i decided to take it for a drive.

Took it for a bit of a thrash and all was performing nicly, swung into sainsburys car park thinking i\'d treat it to a jet wash, when it suttered really badly and i noticed smoke pouring out from the bonnet, I imediatly stopped the engine and popped the bonnet where i got a load of horrid smelling white smoke pour out.

Left if for 5 mins to clear, started it again while looking at the bay only to notice  some small flames commming from somewhere around the coils, shut the engine of very quickyl poured a lot of water over it to be sure and called the RAC with a  low loader to take me home.

I\'d just like to say I was seriously impressed with the RAC too.

So anyone know whats so flamamble by the coils? and before anyone suggests it i\'ve re routed the fueling so it doesn\'t use the hard pipes on the rats nest.

Sounds like something became resistive rather than conductive if you ask me!  The amount of current being produced by the coils can easily start a fire in its own right (or kill you if you get on the wrong side of it!) so I\'d say its a failure of the ignition system itself. (Any chance you had disturbed this/damaged it during your work on the car?)

If you say it was running OK, and then suddenly went funny (rather than gradually getting worse), then i\'d guess something near the coils was loose, and somehow got bumped into touching them and shorting them out...

If that is the case, I would also check your battery once the damage is fixed, just in case it got overloaded...

There\'s 2 fuel lines not a million miles away from the coils.

Maybe the dreaded pulsation damper on the primary rail failing? :(

nikp

That\'s not quite so close to the coils though.

I have just put everything back in from scracth so the coils have just been refitted with a twinspark in there too, it wasn\'t fuel as it was only a small flame like a candle, if petrol was envolved it would be much worse.

Right I have got the car appart, problem found and 1 burned out set of wiring.

What appears to have happended is that the coils have come lose and rubbed throught the loom that runs from the car to the coils the short black length that has a black plug on one end and goes to the three plugs for the coils.

That appears to be all the damage I can see at the moment, so if anyone has one of these drop me a line as I need one asap.
