After owning a modded GTO Twin Turbo and now an FTO GPX I have decided my next purchase will be an RX7 Twin Turbo.

I have been doing my homework through the extensive expertise from you guys and I reckon it is the car for me.

The guy who imported my GTO now has a 92 Type R, standard spec with 60k on the clock, black with red nappa leather. He has had it compression tested by Mazda in the UK with the following results:

Front 98/99/98 PSI
Rear 101/98/100 PSI

He wants £6995 for it, how does that sound? Are the compression pressures in the right area?

I do around 1000 miles a month (I use a diesel Omega during the week for my 85 mile round trip commute) and the car will mostly be used for 40 mile + runs at the weekend. Am I likely to get a year or two out of this engine or will I be needing a rebuid?

Sorry for the barrage of questions but I know there are some real experts on this board and I hope you will help me out.

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark

Welcome :)

Someone else will be along to say if those compression results are in acceptable tolerences however I would say that compression is not the only indicator of a rebuild or major work being needed in the future. Compression should be taken into account but don\'t base everything on it

60k miles is around the time a rotary may need a rebuild but it may go on for another 20k dependant on how the seals/tips are and how its been treated in the past, modifications, oil changes etc. Or it may die in 1000 miles

I would budget for a rebuild at anytime just in case

I would get a rotary specialist to examine it like Roteknics or Reworx etc dependant on where you are located just to be sure

Thanks guys, I have been down today for a look and have bought the car, it is great, the engine has been rebuilt quite recently, it starts and runs smoothly, the boost comes in smoothly and the car is in good condition cosmetically. There are a couple of tiny dents in the nsf door but nothing I can\'t get done through Dent Wizard at work (I sell MG Rover cars during the day).

I am picking it up on Thursday and can\'t wait.

Once again thanks to all the contributors to this forum, your help and knowledge has been invaluable.

Hope to see you all at an event sometime.

Congrats and welcome to the world of rotary ownership!  Time to change your sig i think!

7k for a decent FD with a rebuilt engine is a very decent price.
