yeah you can check it with a normal comp tested ( not as good as a mazda one though )

hold the release valve in when you do the test and you should see 3 even bounces

you need to do this with a warm car though - so becareful

there are some procedures somewhere for it

allrite lad, how did you get on with your comp test then?

Nick The Doctor

Right , have done compression test on the car and its showing just under 5.5bar on both rotors , i think the car should still drive ok like that but doesnt seem to pull at all which leads me to think there maybe turbo problem or a air leak from somewhere , I think i may just get the car taken to rotechniks and get them to investigate the problem and go from there , anymore ideas :(

Must say a big thanks to Peter for all his help :Thumbsup!

humm 5.5bar is about 77psi - they reckon 81 psi and lower is BAD - you want to be around the 100 mark .. sorry about being the barer of bad news

Yep thought so , only thing is compression tester was piston engine types , so little worried that may be very wrong not to sure , think iam best taking it to someone who knows what there doing , Ive bought new wheels , exhaust sytem , mirrors and more and the car aint even running yet , I must be mad LOL :D  at least i can just look at it :driving

antnicuk

was the engine warm when you did the test,  ?

Also if I remember somewhere that you add something like 20% on your figures if using a standard comp tester. if 5.5 is what you got then it could be as much as 6.6    Still not brillient though.  if the miles are low then you have nothing to lose by putting some cleaner in the plug holes, some have used all sorts, plenty of threads on here.  it might just be a lazy apex seal spring but the comp test should have picked it up.  You are watching the bounces of the needle, all 3 bounces should be around the same.
It could just be a tired engine. also make sure that it is warm as Antnikuk said and make sure that your oil is topped to full on dip stick.
I\'m all set for Sunday, just need your word and a location,i\'ll have a look on the map and see a suitable place.

Just spoke the guy doing it and car was cold does that make the readings worse , pete will txt you tmz to sort out place to meet , now how do i get 9.5x17 et13 fit ouch

TiddlesRX7

Think im right in saying that it needs to be warm so that the rotor housings and rest of the engine has expanded to give the engine its greatest clearances. This gives a lower compression reading than when an engine is cold. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but if its reading 5.5 when cold it will be less when warm. Feel free to flame me if im wrong guys!

is that not the other way around? when cold things contract and therefore larger clearances.  when hot things expand and you get tighter clearances.  some metals expand or have a better thermal expansion than other and they can use this to good affect.
I would have said to get it hot so that the expansion has occured and a better compression should be had.
On a side note an exhaust can \'grow\' an inch when its at full blast.
but i could be shot down in flames as well if i\'m wrong.

It could be either way im not sure. I just know it has to be warm to do the test! Hopefully someone will clarify this for us.
If when warm the rotor expands more than the housing it would result in there being less volume in the chamber = higher compression
If when warm the rotor housing expands more than the rotor then there is a higher volume in the chamber = lower compression.
Im just thinking out loud and hopeing that someone else will tell us the correct explination.

Hallo,
You will get a lower reading on a cold engine.

Thanks,
JH

antnicuk

What he said,   all the seals expand making a better seal against the housings, thats why you tollerance the seals when building to allow for heat expansion

9.5 isnt a problem but ET13 is.
