My FD3S overheated last night in traffic, it went to 120 and before i could turn it off, it went pop and made and loud whistling noise, steam shot out from under the inlet area at the back of the engine bay

Obviously i turned it off immediatly and towed it home.

I dont really know what im posting this for because i know its not going to give me a miracle cure and say everythings ok but is there a hose down in that area that could pop off?

Chances of engine damage? :2Confused

Hi Dele
Lets not condemn it just yet.

There are some small coolant hoses under the inlet manifold. Had one of these fail myself.

Find the broken hose, replace it, top up the coolant , and lets see if it starts.

pipes to the water heated manifold mate.... might have had a jubilee clip missing or something & just hapend to blow off when in traffic!!

120oC is where seal damage is possible, you might get away with it if you\'re really lucky but usually over 120oC and its damage time.

Get everything checked over and see if you got lucky mate :2eek

As said, there is a pipe leading from the block to the rear of the inlet manifold, near the secondary butterflys... the pop and whistling noise could have been the pipe splitting / blowing off I guess?!

Mine split a few weeks back.. a few hours to replace, altho my temps only got to 102 after i\'d switched the car off and it has stood without pumping water.

Good luck.

I spoke to the previous owner, he said he replaced that pipe and he doubts its that, but surely if it reached 120 then it wouldnt care if it was a new or old pipe it would blow regardless?

How would i know if i have seal damage?

Thanks!

The dreaded champaign test mate!!!

Just do a search & it will all be explaind!!

I\'ll take a look at it at the weekend,

I had to move it last night round the garage, i left it running for 5 minutes and nothing untoward occured, temp was fine, idle was fine, oil pressure was fine.

Hoping its just a hose and i havent broken the water seal!

I\'ll let you know

Sorry to see your having problems,

Wilst it could be almost any pipe on the water system that has burst or poped off first have a look at the pipe from the engine to the plastic AST tank in front of the engine as these are push on hoses, or you could even have a split AST tank which is common on older cars.

Hope this helps

I had an FD that rode around for a year after a pipe came off before the water seals eventualy expired, so all is not lost yet.

Just read the above,

You really need to drive the car to get the water flowing and everthing up to full temperature as I have found before that with the 3 small hoses on top of the engine, one to the throttle body, one under the throttle butter-flys
and one to the left of the altonator these may not leak on tickover.

The pop and woosh actualy may have been the pressure cap letting go.

Lastly, does your buzzer work ??????, if not you really need to mend this before you go any further so you know your not running an engine thats low on water.

You really really need this because if you still have the stock water gauge these are about as good as nothing and only warn you of anything untoward when it\'s far too late.

The thing is, under pressure, the system doesn\'t boil until 129 degree\'s. Great news on the face of it. However, as soon as something \'pops\' off or split open, it\'s no longer under pressure and will boil at 100 degrees. So, it\'s not looking good at 120 degrees. However, you may still be lucky, but i wouldn\'t expect it to be ok.

Mine did a similar thing, due to a split hose, but I switched off as soon as I saw it hit 102 degrees. Been fine since.  And, obviously, that was above the 100 degree boiling point threshold and I was ok. So, you never know!

RemarkLima

But if you run coolant then the boiling point is higher than 100°C, depends on the mix but 50/50 water / coolant should be about 110 - 115 at the least.

So you may be lucky!!!

wat psi pressure cap ar you running?

Dele

Ok,

Finally decided to go look at it today after letting it sulk in the garage for the last 3 weeks, started it up and left it running, then noticed when you blip the throttle theres a nasty gargling noise comming out of the air filter, checked all my fluid levels and they are fine, it hasnt leaked anything either.

There was also a slight leaking of exhaust gas in the engine bay, gasket?
