Solenoids

I\'ve been having boost issue for a while now and I finally got round to doing something about it. Symptoms were slow boost build up, no boost till 5k, full boost then after decel no boost again. So I decided to rework the rats nest with nice blue silicone and while i was doing that I tested all the solenoids.

All of them passed the Mazda test, but after doing a lot of reading before hand I remembered that the Turbo Control Solenoid works under differnt condictions and should be tested slightly differently.

And would you know it ... the spring was too weak to vent the boost and kept it open. All the solenoids I had were like this, some far worse than others.

Any way, this brings me to a few questions:

1. Are there any other solenoid that works under similar conditions to the TC solenoid?
2. How much does Mazda charge for a new one?
3. Does anyone have a working solenoid they want to sell me?

Thanks in advance,
Nad

also i have a boost gauge in mine , what should it boost to ? at best mine boosts to 1 bar ? is this ok ? what is the normal boost ? do these  suffer from boost creep ?
oh and hi i am a new owner of a 91 fd ,

nad just thinking, I seem to remember if you have the wastegate and turbo precontroll solenoids on back to front you get the symptoms you describe. lack of boost then 2nd turbo coming on hard! maybe worth checking you have the two the correct way around.

1. dont know (but all the solenoids on the rack are the same part number!)
2.Mazda will charge an arm and a leg - you could try a builder such as super7auto\'s wgt hayward etc. im sure they can sell you one for a decent price as they will come out with single turbo builds!
3. if you realy do need 1 i could post one for ya. but i dont know the state of it. :Thumbs-up
I woof in your general direction.

Porkifer,

According to Maxda a stock FD should see 10psi then 8psi then 10psi. The 8psi is the transition from the 1st turbo to the second turbo. I can\'t remember the exact transition range off the top of my head. IIRC 1bar is 14psi and there are varying opinions on if this is any good for stock turbos/fueling/cooling.

Leon,

The rats nest in my car looks like it hasn\'t been touched since the day it left the production line. Some of the lines were so hard they just snapped when i tried to move them.

I went to my local mazda dealer and according the the manual/parts list the solenoids have different part numbers. I thought they were all the same too. Oh they want £50+vat for each one

I\'m going to give some of the tuners a call and see, it\'s a good thing i\'m not in a huge hurry :)

Tharek,

I\'ve got 4 spare solenoids and they all pass the Mazda test as specified in the service manuals. But when you test them the way the link says they all stick open for a little then closes or just gets stuck open because the springs in the solenoids have gotten so weak ove the past 14 years. If any of the solenoids still opperate with 14psi running through them, then I\'ll gladly take 2 off you :Thumbs-up

Thanks again :Laugh

Well ive physicaly looked at each of the ones on the rats nest (the ones that look identical bar a little slip on filter on one of the nipples) they all have the same part number :Thumbs-up  and yeah i can realy understand some of thsoe hoses were real brittal for me, but only over the turbo\'s !
