I\'ve currently got a Pulsar GTI-R, 280 bhp.........

I\'ve been wanting an RX7 ever since i saw one at the motor show when they first came out - i was only young but remember my Dad saying it was the nicest car ever!

i thought to myself, i gotta have one another day!!

Anyway, my car is being sold so i\'ve got up to around £11,000 to spend.

What sort of car should i be looking at for this?

Do i buy from a Trader, and get a warranty for it???

I\'ve heard the Rotor tips can wear out up to 50/70k miles?  Is this normal?

How much for a rebuild, and also as i live in Newbury Berkshire - (mid south) where can i take it to get repaired/serviced??

Any help or advice is really appreciated!

Thanks guys.

Have a read around here - most of this stuff gets asked all the time so it shouldnt take too long to find:

What sort of car should i be looking at for this?

Either a tuned early car, or something around 1995 I would expect.  If it were my money Id go for something early thats just had an engine rebuild.  Approx 8-9k and then you have some left over incase

Do i buy from a Trader, and get a warranty for it???

I would buy the car that was the best, regardless of where it was from.  Also see above.

Yes

Approx 3k for standard spec.  It depends what went wrong, and how much you re-use.

Hope that helps for a start.

Mopving thread to buying a rotary section...

Hi
Welcome to mrc
Im not the most knowledgable on here if you want tech help, but as I own 3 of them, heres my 2p.
Personally if I was buying from scratch I would buy from a dealer, Look in the vendors section, Brian Ellis has several very nice cars in there, all at sensible prices, does not buy cheap or rubbish, all checked by RX Motors and Brian stands by his guarentees, not suggesting others dont but you wont go far wrong by seeing what he has.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the prompt replies!

What\'s Brians user name on here??

Does he offer a warranty with any of the cars?

Main reason being i\'ve heard that if the turbo\'s go - it\'s £1000 straight away, then obviously a £3k rebuild is not something i fancy......

I\'d be using the car daily to and from work (around 5 miles each way), i know the fuel consumption is very high - but are they ok in terms of general driving on journeys like this?

Last bit was about Tuners/Servicing, are there any specialists local to me (Reading, Swindon etc)??

Thanks once again!

BNA_Ellis of the top of my head.  He would be the one with all the cars for sale in Rotary Vendors

Yes, and has recently paid for someone engine rebuild so he stands by them too - best to speak to him though.

Should be ok, but it would be a shame to drive it only in traffic.
Expect sub 15mpg on a trip like that.

Rotechniks are in Reading, but I dont really like mentioning tuners by themselves as everyone has a preferance on them.

You have a fair choice in the area you live in terms of service etc.

Carl Hayward (Hayward Rotary) is in Newbury for engine rebuild work.

Rotechniks are in Grazely nr Reading for Service work. Fairly expensive, but do provide a loan car which is handy for many.

RE:Worx are in Portsmouth (Copnor), under one hours drive.

Sorry if I missed out others! Please add some!

I had no idea Carl Hayward worked on RX7\'s!!

I\'ve never even seen an RX7 around here lol!!

Could be handy anyway - does he do servicing too??

My Journey to work is far from sitting in traffic!  It\'s all smooth country lanes, in fact - it\'d probably be an awesome journey in an RX7!!

I was told that single figure MPG is not uncommon on these - is that right?

How many miles would you get from a tank on an average weeks driving??

I\'ve PM\'d Brian about a couple of cars he has - especially the Single turbo white one, that looks like a lovely motor!!

Anyone have any idea why the RX7\'s are so much to insure??  It\'s quite a bit more then a Supra i\'ve found??

Yes

Around 200 miles per tank, which is around 50-55 depending on fuel price.  Only made it to 180 last fill up though for 51

I didnt find that the case, but best look in the insurance section and see what has been said.

Cant be bothered making stuff bold anymore.

To be honest - it doesnt\' sound much worse then the Pulsar!  Maybe a tad, but not enough to worry about really!

I\'ve looked through the insurance section and picked up a few numbers!  I\'ll try them at lunch i think......  Tesco quoted me £1400 online, i\'m 21 with 4yrs NCB - completely clean license.

Supra was only £1100 though which is odd?

J4P RX

I had a GTiR before my RX7, and was of that same thought.  It wont be much more expensive than a Pulsar.

I warn you now, you are wrong.  Its a lot more expensive than a Pulsar.  I wish I had kept my Pulsar now as a run around.

What purely for Fuel Reasons???

Fishy

Get yourself an old banger for daily driving and keep the FD for weekend playtime. :D

Fuel is a pretty big factor.  What the Pulsar would do on £35, the RX7 needs £55.

Then there is the servicing which im doing much more often too.  Pulsar parts are cheaper and easier to get hold of if something goes wrong.  You will probably be tempted to tune it too, which costs a lot.

The Pulsar was certainly a lot easier to live with, especially if you just wanted to get somewhere and not worry too much.  In the winter, the Pulsar would be a fair bit quicker in most peoples hands.  You cant drive the RX7 without having to concentrate on what your doing.  When its wet and you can wheelspin at say 80mph just by getting on the throttle, sometimes you wish you had something else.

I use my RX7 every day.  It was good to begin with, but now I really want it to just be a 2nd car.

Just to say I thoroughly recommend Brian. He has good cars and as a top guy to deal with.

Unfortunately one of my water seals went - no way to see this coming. No questions asked, my car was whisked away and rebuilt.

As for fuel I\'m lucky in not doing too many miles, but get around 18mpg.

nickg123

Wow - good to hear an honest opinion i guess!

I just love the way they look - i\'ve always wanted a 2 door sports car.........

It\'s always been between the Supra and the Rx7 - but the Rx just looks a lot nice in my opinion!
