Hi,

I\'ve just had a Cat1 alarm and immobiliser fitted on my FD, but I\'m still a bit scared of someone nicking it when I\'m not there....

I\'d like to work out a way of disabling it by maybe pulling out a lead from under the bonnet, or maybe pulling out a fuse or something...

Anyone know of any good ways of doing this?

Obviously, I\'d want the alarm to still be powered and active, so disconnecting the battery is out... and I don\'t want to be messing with any important leads, just something that would stop it either starting or moving.

Or should I stop being paranoid and just trust the alarm?

Oh, and while I\'m on the subject, how much would a proper \'kill switch\' cost to get fitted?  could I do it myself?

If the alarm and immobiliser have been profectionally fitted, and they are good ones, you don\'t have anything to worry about. The car just will not start - it won\'t even turn over.

So, stop being paranoid!

A better bet in fact, will be a visual deterant, as you don\'t want someone to even attempt to break in. So, either get a steering wheel lock, or get a removable steering wheel boss. That way, any prospective thief won\'t want to even try, as it\'ll take too long to figure out how to drive it.

Or put a for sale sign on the back and state a rebuild is needed..  (cost 10p)

get some security film (in clear or light tint) applied to the side and back windows. no way in then except for trashing the door locks.  i have it on mine and it\'s cooler in the summer too.

oh, OK, I\'ll stop being paranoid then LOL..

Are cat1 immobilisers really that good then... I thought most young ASBO kids could break into a car and be off with it in under 2 mins...?

That sounds good... wouldn\'t you need to put it on the windscreen too?
does it look different from the inside?

I\'d prolly hear anyone nicking it anyway, cos of the exhaust noise, and cos they\'d obviously have to wait for 5 mins for it to warm up before driving off  :evillaugh :evillaugh

Jeez, no! I had some kids try and get into mine. They took the strip off the base of the window and tried using a coat hanger to unlock it. Where, once they had done that, they could have got in within 2 seconds, but were too stupid to figure out how to. Security systems these days are so good, that most thieves have to resort to knicking the keys.

My previous car, which was a Vauxhall Calibra, and usually the security on them is terrible, which therefore makes them a lot more likely to target. I once found the car down the bottom of my road, as someone had broken in, it wouldn\'t start so they tried to bump start it. It obviously still wouldn\'t (as it had a good imobilisor on it) so they left it. Stupid fookers!

To be honest I always look on it that if someone \'wants\' to nick your car then they will no matter how long it takes.

I have a cat 1 alarm on mine plus got one of those huge cat 3 steering locks that goes over the steering wheel, just lifting it to put it on is heavy enough lol.

I think its not just about security on the car its also about where you park it, if it looks a dodgy place then dont bring the Rex, thats what girlfriends cars are for lol. Nobody is going to nick a car with cuddly toys on the dash !!!

There\'s nothing worse than bringing your car to somewhere you dont know and parking it in somewhere dodgy, you end up worrying about it all night !!

Just my 2pence worth !!

slightly darker from the inside but not much. windscreen is already laminated so no need.

Fuel pump fuse would do it I guess. Or put a hidden switch in line with fuel pump.
Course you could always Insulate doors and wire them up to mains so that anyone trying gets electricuted :)

if you are that worried - just pull the EGI fuse - this does fuel/ignition/ECU - car will NOT start without this in :D

just a hassle to remove it every time

yeah, fairy nuff....

I guess half the battle is in pschological deterrent, like putting a sticker saying "This cars got a tracker on it, so **** off" or something...

Another thing I\'m worried about, is someone ripping the bonnet open and nicking something from in there...  there\'s been more money spent in there than on the car itself!!  LOL

might get a steering lock though, anyone know any good ones?

Alarms and locks keep out the innocent. Thats all :(

A hidden switch that is inline with the EGI fuse would mean you don\'t have the hassle of removeing the fuse.  Switch has to be seriously well hidden though.
