Hello folks I am the proud owner of a Integra Type R, and am just trying to decide if I should go for a RX7 :P

So here are a bunch of questions.. some might be stupid but I am reading all I can abut RX7, and theres many doubts to it.

So here it goes. I having some dificulties in understanding whats the best model to take. I saw so many, single turbo, Twin turbo, touring, bla bla, I know.. Stupid, but, I saw much higher HP from some single turbo then from twin ones, and everyone says twins have some issues with second turbo, so whats the best go? Any real davantages in a twin turbo..

Now, a RX7 has alot of maintenance, i heard theres some mods one should ALWAYS do to have a reliable car, what would these be?

And with them for how long more or less I would have to get to another rebuild. 50k miles?

another one.. I seen many people stating the cost of a rebuild.. ussually rebuild would be to get the engine in 100% condition? Or just get the seals done and some other parts. Why does the price of a rebuild floats so much.

I am sorry for these basic question for you guys but... here in portugal, theres maybe 1 or 2 RX7, and no info at all... and no specialized shops of garages, and Mazda wouldnt be one to trust... Hope you can help me.

BTW if buying one should I do imediatly any change, to come with her to portugal relaxed that I wont have a problem so soon..

I\'m guessing you are looking at the 3rd generation RX7 (FD3S)?

If so they were all twin turbo as standard, a number of owners change the twin setup for a larger single turbo - more power, less complicated piping, etc - however the larger single turbo IS more laggy than the standard twins.

The models available were (and I hope I get them all): Type R, Type R2, Type RS, Type RB, Bathurst RB, Type RZ, Type X, Type S + the later edition Spirit R versions, these were the JDM models in the UK we only had one official model the US gets things like Touring. There is a thread on here about the differences most were small differences in the specification for example the RZ had uprated suspension, lighweight carbon seats and a few other uprated performance parts.

Mods to do: most owners would say installing an Apex\'i Power FC ECU is the best thing as it allows you to better monitor and control the engine performance.

A new engine should last 60-70k or more, but it depends on how well it is looked after, some last into the 100k+ region

costs depend on how much of the engine needs replacing, "normal" rebuilds involve replacement of apex seals, oil control rings, water seals and housings. After that you may need centre or end plates replaced, rotors or even the eccentric shaft.

I hope that helps

Yes I was looking for an FD3S. Ok now I understand why the single turbo thing.

I have found recently a page, can you tel me if what they say is what one should follow?

These look very well informed guys and nice hints.

And also what to do to make it more reliable.

Hope you all can help me. And maybe this page can help someone.

Looks reasonable advice to me!

I thought the first article was a bit too much on the "don\'t buy an RX7 unless you know what yor are doing, they are unreliable and expensive!"

RX7s are no more unreliable than any high performance car, if looked after properly they will run for a long time, it is just that they are a lot mor sensitive to lack of maintenance. However rebuilds are cheaper than on similar performace orientated piston vehicles (how much would a full rebuild on a Skyline or a Supra be?).

If you chose the right car and maintain it properly you will be fine.

The reliability mods make sense, regular oil, filter and fluid changes are all ways of keeping the rotary happy

Will you be using one everyday?

X_Ice_X

no, just as a weekend car

Then a good example with minor mods will be perfect. If you are importing a highly modified one i would suggest finding one with 90% of its history if not all. If you are worried about reliability etc.

Maybe you should familiarise yourself with the post service before you jump into the realms of a Wankel engine.

Please post me my Integra headlights that I paid for in October 2005!
